Yessssss. Honestly i caught my self doing that and i become depressed. Than i realized my hair is way different and i need to shutup and love it the way it is.
I wear glueless wigs. I just throw it on with my wig grip and satin cap and let me hair rest during the workweek. I dont care if it looks like a wig. All l care about is protecting my hair and not having to manipulate it or leaving it out to the elements.
Jasmine Harris same!! I did everything in my power to stretch my hair bc I HATED my shrinkage and that led to me losing a lot of it. I noticed that before I started watching RU-vid videos on natural hair, I didn’t really mind my shrinkage but then I kept hearing “shrinkage is bad” “shrinkage is ugly” “I hate my shrinkage, so I began to hate mine. Now I’m just tryna love it.
@@sabrinastars1284 fr. I understand that shrinkage does make some girls hair tangled but i think most just think it's ugly. One time i wore my hair all shrunken up to school and that was the time i got the least amount of complements. I did feel ugly but than i realized most people do like big long hair. And that's ok. But it's my hair and if i want it shrunken and give it a break than I'ma do that. I love my hair shrunken now and i love my hair stretch. Lets normalize shrunken hair💜
Unpopular opinion: 4c hair isn't extremely hard to maintain. People need to just learn their hair and have a simple hair care routine. ( I have 4c hair)
I agree, it's just a trashy excuse to hate the 4c hair texture because the media doesn't glorify it..tbh..people who put down their own 4c hair and complain about it is lost mentally😥😥
My daughter has mainly 4c and her hair is softer than mine. I’m 4abc mainly 4b. With water and a lil product, her hair stays moisturized and manageable. Ppl just have an issue with the look of 4c hair 🤷🏾♀️
FACTS. I’m literally deep conditioning my 4c hair rn, and I do my hair every week with no problem. And STAY getting compliments. I also only spend about $30 a month on my products 😎
Oprah's idiot hairstylist, Andre Walker, came up with that foolish hair-typing system. He went on the record saying that "although he recommends embracing your natural texture, kinky hair is the only hairtype that has limited styling options, and should therefore, be altered with professional relaxing." Yes indeed. He said that. That's why I never subscribed to that nonsense. It originates from a bad place, rooted in self-hate.
July Fit Wow how disrespectful for him to say that 😕 I never understood how someone can consider themselves a stylist but they need someone’s hair altered especially with chemicals in order to do it if you have to damage someone’s hair to do it you shouldn’t be a hair stylist.
@@omyamarie Have you ever heard of that famous hair stylist Anthony Dickey? He said in a RU-vid video that there is no mention of how to take care of kinky hair in the textbooks used to educate "legions" of prospective hair stylists. The only thing they mention is how to change it. That had me shook. Goes to show you how truly unfortunate and negative the perception of our hair really is. It's like we don't even exist.
July Fit no I don’t think I have that’s crazy no wonder why for so long black womens hair was tore up even with relaxers some barley knew what to do, I probably would’ve been looking like Josephine baker back in the day over anything lol.
@@omyamarie Yep. I know for me, relaxers tore my ish up! My hair is kinky, but fine and what old folks used to call "cottony." That lye just ate my hair up. I was like, why does it feel like modern-day torture just to get your hair done? Lol!
3/4 a b c... that's actually 6 categories lol. No one's hair is exactly the same as someone else's. If there were to be categories to fully account for every last head if hair, then we would need as many categories as there are people. But the point of having categories is to group based on similarities eventhough there still are differences. In addition, the curl pattern isn't the only method of typing hair... there is the porosity, coarseness, density and silky-ness of hair. These are all independent of curl pattern. So the 3/4 ABC typing doesn't claim to describe everyone's head of hair thoroughly. Also, did you know that when choosing make up, regardless of your race, there are only 3 categories of undertones that you can identify with? Warm, cool and neutral.
And also, yes... There is "dark skinned, light skinned, and brown skinned" There is "tall, short and average height" There is "ectomorph, endomorph and mesomorph" Three categories for the things you said cant be categorized in threes... because categories are just general labels.
Renita Savory i see what ur saying but still... knowing whether you are type 3/4 abc isn’t important. Like if you thought your whole life you were 4a and today you found out you were 4c, nothing is really going to change. The reason why the typing system isn’t great is because it doesn’t have an impact on how you take care of your hair, so it really doesn’t matter and people obsess about it for no reason . The things you mentioned are more important (porosity, density etc). The makeup example is completely different though because knowing your undertone actually MATTERS when picking makeup to wear. And on top of that undertones, skin type (oily, sensitive e.t.c) and other things matter as well. Also with your height/body type examples...that’s also different because people can be placed into one or a combination of those categories. There are people who’s hair doesn’t even EXIST on the chart... so what good does that do?
@@serayahw.450 I would agree that its not as important as people imagine that it is... but i wouldn't say that its altogether unnecessary. It did help me develop realistic expectations of my hair. One thing that could change after someone comes to understand their curl pattern is that they would stop thinking "this product doesn't work on my hair"..... they'd understand that the hair is doing wht it does and won't become frustrated trying to make it behave differently. I think that instead of trying to disregard the curl pattern categories altogether, people should explain more that the other characteristics of hair are not dependent on the curl pattern.... which is what most people think; they think that as you move away from 4c, the hair is stronger, less tangled, more silky, easier to moisturize, easier to define etc. But thats not the case. Those things depend on the other things that I mentioned before. Then people are disappointed when their observations don't match their expectations and they conclude that "the typing system is useless." But they're using it for the wrong reasons in the first place. Sometimes people even type their hair "4c" because it's difficult to define their curls and gets dry easily. And on the other hand, people say "you're not 4c" because the curls are easily defined and easy to detangle or something so. Once people understand that 3/4 abc is JUST the curl pattern and nothing more, we'll be able to appreciate its usefulness.
I think black women are pressured to change our hair or “get it done” I’m not bashing other women and different cultures but they don’t have those pressures. The can wear their hair down for 50 years and nobody says anything 🤷🏾♀️
This is so true. I work around nothing but women especially black women. I changed my hair one day and this one nurse says, "it's about time you switched it up". I was like, "I don't change my style to impress people". I'm just tired of other black women all in my damn face.
@@stashia3647 yeah, that's annoying. I don't know who started this whole obsession with having slick edges. Why can't we just embrace our edges the way they are.
Today a black man with the same hair type as me said I need to comb my hair with an iron comb uhm his hair isn’t even healthy I was shocked !!! That black men still have a problem with black women having BLACK hair.
Yep. Happened to me. A black man cashing out at the register next to me asked me why I don’t comb my hair because I wore it in an Afro. I was shocked 😳
Briefly dated a black guy who asked me when I'd eventually 'do' my hair. Btw, my hair was bra strap length, coily 4c with great sheen- I loved my hair! I excused him from my life.
The lie about grease is directly related to why natural hair care is so expensive. Most of these lines selling $15 leave-ins, curl custards, and spritz would be out of business if most women just stuck with grease. Sabotaging grease was key to selling expensive products which are considered “better”. The major ingredient in all hair grease is petroleum or petrolatum, aka petroleum/Vaseline. It is non-comedogenic and recommend by most dermatologist to prevent dry skin and to combat eczema. If it was so bad for the pores on our scalp nobody would use it on their skin either. Nothing wrong with grease. I’m more a wash and go person but I’ll still grease my scalp and use it to seal my ends.
I totally get your point. For a youngster just starting out its very inexpensive to use grease. But me personally, I do not like the feel of grease. It rubs off on my clothes and anything my hair touches and for my husband its just not romantic. It is just disgusting to me. Also I am high porosity. My hair fails with grease. This RU-vidr has to be low porosity(that's who grease usually works for).
Sonja Baptiste my hair is also higher in porosity. I do not mind how the grease feels on my hair or how much it transfers. I’ve been using geese my entire life, I guess I’m just used it.
Sonja Baptiste grease works amazing on all porosities and it benefits high porosity the most as we’re known for having rapid moisture loss. a little grease goes a long way, hair isn’t supposed to feel greasy, if anything oils make my hair feel more greasy than actual hair grease.. it needs to be focused on the last 2 inches of your hair and your shaft if you wish. a dime size is honestly enough for a section after you have moisturized it with water and perhaps another product like a cream or leave in
Vasty A. Hi Vasty A a little of any product just doesn’t do it for me. My daughter is 24 yrs old and never had a perm. I used grease in her hair and it worked well. But for me I have to use liquid leave in with film forming humectants water glycerine honey etc and finish it off with a gel such as aloe Vera , flax seed or one of those man made gels to keep my hair moisturizer and detangled for weeks. I don’t even bother with creams , oils or butters anymore. I don’t even do the LOC method . I do the LG method. 😃
Sonja Baptiste lol I do the LG method as well 😂 it works. I just started using a twisting cream as my sister recommended it. It’s ok but I think the LG method gets the job done!
I really agree with your opinion on self-hatred and long hair. The argument that black women wanting long hair isn't logical. Self-hatred usually stems from hating a part of your physical appearance that you can't change, for example, the color of your skin. The hair on the other hand grows! So wanting your hair to be healthy and retain length isn't self-hatred its a form of self-love! The stigma that black women can't have long healthy hair has got to go.
Exactly. That makes no sense at all. How could letting your hair do what it's supposed to do, i.e. grow, be a sign of self-hatred. Black women have had the most elaborate hairstyles throughout history. We have always worn our hair as a crown. I don't see how that statement making any sense at all.
Girl!! I recently learned a LOT more about my hairs density/porosity/shaft width(thickness) and lemme tell you.. before knowing and learning that part of my hair I was using stuff that did nothing for my hair.. now most recently I’ve grown my hair over 4in in less than a month. While doing my hair I’m always thinking “this hair type stuff is honestly so bogus”. Hair types are so restrictive, when there is such a wide variety of each type
Laila Alanna Yes ma’am, although I won’t entirely credit the length I’m retaining to just those things I mentioned previously.. I’ve been eating a lot cleaner in terms of diet consistently, working out regularly, and taking everyday vitamins since I learned I was lacking many. Once I combined all of these things as well as leaving my hair in cornrows 4 weeks at a time, I noticed I was retaining and gaining more and more length, at 4 inches within that 4 week period was the longest amount I had recorded for myself. But I’m definitely not growing 4 inches of hair and retaining four inches every single month lol, I typically find an average of 1-2 inches, I’d just mentioned the 4 inch benchmark because that was after I’d started focusing more on factors that *werent* my hair type or the hair typing system
@@maplesyrup6052 it's even dumber looking when they don't even have full edges irl. Don't even see why ppl want a lot of edges, my edges end close to my eye brows.
One unpopular opinion some people will complain up and down over DIY simple projects (whipped Shea butter with olive oil and/ or grease) or how much some products cost but are so quick to spend $300 and up for a wig or weave 🙄. It’s not rocket science to take care of your hair make it yourself lol I love DIY projects. Sis use what works for YOU NO ONE CAN TELL YOU HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR HAIR.
Here’s my unpopular opinion: You don’t really HAVE to lay your edges/baby hairs down to look pretty. As someone who has high porosity 4c hair that ALWAYS frizzes when I blink, I eventually get used to my hair being frizzy. I like frizz. I think it gives it more character. Other the other hand, I’ve yet to find an edge control that’ll lay them down when I actually want to lay them for a hairstyle, occasionally. Long story short, frizzy hair is pretty.
😁😁 thank you!! I hate "DEFINITION": Define your hair; You shouldn't have frizz because your hair will break!! - Sorry, ma'am. I don't need it to be beautiful and happy😊
Unpopular opinion here, I think 4c girls complain too much about not being able to do hair styles when they don’t even try. The amount of “I cannot 4c myself doing this” comments I’ve seen is annoying because half the time they don’t even try the style before writing it off with 4c hair. Most of the time the problem isn’t their curl pattern the problem is their hair length.
Bee o yes I’ve noticed that too they just brush it off as if their hair is just blah like no your curls are beautiful why not just give it a try, it’s the most disrespected curl pattern when ever many people truly don’t have 4c hair that’s the funny part.
My cousin is a 4c neck length girl (as am I) and she did a slick back bun. It took her almost 2 days to finish it after trying but she did it. It wasn't perfect and her hair was still curly, but we both love the progress. It was fun
I agree and I think 4c curls are stunning, I love the tighter a curl looks..I have a mix of type 4 but honestly I'm done with this trash hair system. I guess I'm mainly 4a/4b because God forbid I say I have a 4c strand, 4c community will attack
I hate seeing that, it's actually gross bc they basically want ppl to feel sorry for them I guess. Kinky hair is beautiful. All they need to is put forth the effort, moisturize, and most importantly shut up. No ones wants to hear it anymore. I'm a kinky natural too.
You made some valid points. I’ve seen 20-30 min videos on girls putting on lace wigs, all that glueing , blowing drying, plucking plus not to mention the hundreds of dollars they spent on that wig. They put so much effort perfecting a wig but entirely neglecting their natural hair. Hair requires maintenance regardless if you wear wigs, weaves or your natural hair. Ever since I went natural I saved some much money NO CAP and I keep it in low tension protective styles majority of the time. I don’t wear weaves or wigs the most I’ll do is get knotless box braids but das it. I suggest watching protective princess she helped me retain length.
For real! That 50 dollar perm every 2 weeks for hair that stopped at my ear was enough to make me want to spend hours with it in 4c. *It's worth the 20 bucks every month.*
Weird Myst wait wait relaxers use to be $50 🥺, I don’t remember I was little when I received my last relaxer but damn I didn’t know it was that much lol
Interesting you say this and while I agree, I have friends who don’t care to take care of their real hair under wigs cuz they’re “never gonna show it anyway” 🤷🏽♀️
Unpopular opinion: Just putting water on your hair doesn’t do much. For me personally spraying water on my hair just makes it dry without a leave in conditioner.
And owned bye a white man who pubically humiliated a popular black influencer for opening our eyes to the bad ingredients. Not only that but black women who use eco stood by him by dragging her on Twitter while he used our slang and urban dialogue against her. It was sad. Never personally purchased the gel but only bought black owned after that!
Agreed, it's watery, not for coily hair and just makes hair dirty and dry, honestly other products do just what gel does without the negatives attacked. Bought it a couple times. Never again.
the amount off ppl talking down on 4c naturals in this comment section is appalling. 4c hair is constantly seen as lesser so of course they are going to be upset by it. When they see another natural with a looser hair type claiming to be 4c, doing a style of course they’re gonna say it’s not going to work for their hair. This is because of the lack of representation of true 4c hair in the natural hair community. Ppl with 4a hair calling their hair 4c, using techniques used for 4a hair is not going to result in a good outcome when a person with 4c hair does the same thing. Instead of getting upset that they are complaining normalize 4c hair and give natural hair influencers with 4c hair a bigger platform.
Finally someone addressing these wigs! They don't look good at all! This obvious parts and baby hairs on lace fronts are sooo annoying! I'd much rather embrace my natural hair or get a natural looking wig/weave
I don't want to bash the girls who wear wigs but maybe the wigs would look more realistic if they were similar to their natural hair texture, since they wear the wigs for protection, but some say that they just want to switch their hair to different things so Idk
I can't stand the hair typing system. I don't care for it. I have been natural for 20 years. This 1 2 3 4 type is something that stated around 2010. I don't get it. And of course black hair is at the bottom. I don't know who started it but it's dumb. I have coily hair and that's that. My daughter have wavy hair now when she was young her hair was very loose curls now that its hip length its wavy that why i dont believe it typing . Length can change your hair pattern and I use the same products in both our hair and no heat.
Exactly! My mom's hair grows and she doesn't even know that people make videos for hair! She just washes it, put hair stuff on it, and keep it in 1 style until it's time for the take down. That's why I'm not Co-washing, deep conditioning, or doing a treatment. I'm not doing anything to speed up the process, I'm just gonna enjoy doing it the old fashioned way.
I actually started saying that other hair types were lower on the hair typing system. (Literally because they are lower numbers). I think it helped me mentally not to see type 4 at the bottom to say type 4 is a higher number. 😅
YASSS some naturals out there be doing the most and sadly the product junkies always get the most views. LIKE DAMN A STRAND OF HAIR CAN ONLY ABSORB SO MUCH! 90% of that stuff is sponsored anyway, aka they be getting paid to try that ish so half the stuff these folks out here recommending is stuff they don't even use they damn selves. Ain't no way in hell you'll ever catch me doing a prepoo, cowash, deep conditioner, regular conditioner, leave in conditioner, custards/creams/butter, sprays...you get the idea LOL. I stay loving my simple & affordable routine.
I haven’t bought products since december ! People need to learn how to buy a lot on sale and not use all of it at once, some of y’all don’t need to use two cups of conditioner ‼️ I moisturize using my whipped shea butter, which costs me like 15 dollars to keep my hair moisturized for weeks.
@Janiya Gowdy I use either Bronner's black soap or a Chagrin Valley shampoo bar to wash, VO5 Freesia conditioner, my DIY whipped shea & cocoa butter for protective styling and the 3 penetrating oils (coconut, olive & avocado). I also use castor oil occasionally for scalp massages. Cheap, simple and these products last a very long time 😁
@@mel_ty9500 Couldn't agree more. I buy all my products in bulk and they last me well over 1yr. I paid $30 for a 10lb block of shea butter and still have plenty left, and some folks pay $30+ for 1 or 2 products! I also gotta put these big name brands on blast for these tiny packaging sizes cuz them lil 8oz bottles would barely even last me 2 uses LOL. I guess thats how they make they're coins but no way i could ever get behind that mess.
I just use a DIY mixture of shea butter and coconut oil when I'm braiding my hair. Some sulfate 8 for the scalp and I'm good. Also, TIP: Buy oils and things such as avocados from the supermarket!! If it's good enough to eat it's good enough to slap on yo head!!
to everyone assuming that wigs are for insecure women, wigs have actually helped my hair grow A LOT and have helped so many people i know as well. I am speaking from experience bc I have high porosity hair so allowing my hair to sit in braids and not putting much tension on it helps it thrive the most. I of course put time into moisturizing and hydrating my hair underneath each day but not everyone who wears wigs neglects or hates their hair. my sister has very low porosity hair so she’s able to wear her hair out more and do more with her hair and i always get compared to her. everyone always assumes i don’t care about my hair bc i wear wigs, meanwhile my natural hair is beautiful and actually grows exponentially. i even made my own natural products from scratch so that assumption is highkey hurtful bc there are actually women who balance enjoying wigs and properly taking care of their hair but everyone has it set in their minds that it’s self hate.
Exactly, wearing wigs to grow my hair underneath has been my BEST decision for a natural hair growth journey. All over RU-vid u can find people saying the same thing about how to grow your hair in cornrows underneath braids. But I guess it depends on the person. Some people choose to still take Care of their hair underneath, and others don’t. But me personally, wigs has been so good to me. ❤️
Blessing Ashanti the wigs too. unless i’m moisturizing/hydrating each day, i don’t touch those cornrows unless it’s my wash day (which is once a month). i wouldn’t walk around with messy, new growth cornrows on a day out. would you?
T B literally and i don’t let anyone tell me otherwise. whenever i’m home i ensure that my wig is off and that my scalp can breathe too. maybe there just needs to be a movement for women to take care of their hair under wigs bc i don’t have anything against them besides the fact that it causes some ppl to neglect their natural hair. they’re a great form of self expression too. i love being able to try colors i would never get to try on my natural hair
Not unpopular to me. I think the hair typing system may have started with good intentions and if you think about it, the toxicity is really within the type 4 space. Type 1 and 2's don't argue back and forth about who straight or curly and who not. Type 4 hair is way too complex to be a one size fits all and that's not even going there with diet, exercise, water intake, climate, medications, illness, etc. Like you, I am over it, way over it.
Fr. There is so much toxicity, it’s the type 4a-b club then the 4C ONLY IF YOUR NOT 4C YOU CANT JOIN DONT TRY IT. Like we are supposed to be united in taking care of all of our hair. They bash their own hair type too.
Actually it may have good intentions but the Creator wanted us with 4b- 4c hair to perm it. It was in an Oprah magazine. I forgot his exact words but he didn't think we should have been in that category at all. The chart started from 1 a, 1 b ,1 c, 2 a 2 b 2 c then it changed and went to 3 a and 3 b, It omitted us(4b/c our and 3c curls). Now the natural hair chart and community is expanding, I saw 4d
Type 4 hair only became “toxic” because society made them that way. Let’s not act like we didn’t contribute to the self hate and discrimination against 4c hair. Now that 4c wants to be inclusive y’all calling the toxic. Nothing wrong with inclusivity
I’m tired of these niggas thank you. I be hearing black people say they don’t want kids with hair like mines (4b/4c)all the freaking time. Almost everyone is toxic tbh
unpopular opinion: porosity and density should be given the same amount of acknowledgment as hair typing. bonus: the reason 4 type hair is so hard to maintain is bc the prices for products are too expensive and the world still doesn't know much about natural hair
Unpopular opinion: hair types don't matter as much as porosity and density does, 4 type hair I don't think is as hard to maintain as everything thinks it is. The products are expensive because they are just playing you. All you need is to research about your hair and all you need really is grease/oil, conditioner and shampoo. The world knows a lot about 4 type hair but you just have to research about it. I think people try to manipulate their curly hair to look different then it's natural state
Fr. I think natural hair (especially when it is bra strap lengh) is very much appealing and different. Different bc our hair is the most unique our of all races.
When I tell you on the first day of school last year I went in a van and the smell of new weave was sickening. That corn smell. You look around and I’m not even being extra when I say all the melanin sisters had a new weave on and I just wanted to pull mine off. It’s sad and it was a sign for me to stop and wear head wraps. You look different and the Men do notice you. Again MEN not them boychilds in the street not that you should even be looking for men’s validation or anyone’s. Go over your values and really love yourself
Use what works for YOU Stop comparing your hair to everyone else! Main thing leave it ALONE! Stop touching it! And Stop stressing! Remove negative people out your life
But it's hard especially if you're scared of wearing wigs in public or you can't afford to get braids every 3/4 months. But I will try I might buy a scarf and just go outside like that🙇🏾♀️
Natural Academia I leave my hair the hell alone. What I have learned from seeing some of your videos is I need to stop brushing it out to set angle before wash days I get sooo much shedding from that.
@@miriamaesthetic5137 a scarf is good one. I do it all the time. Just learn how to do. The varied wrapping. To change up the way. The scarf lay on your head.
The natural hair community can be toxic. Some think because you don't lay edges, don't prepoo, use sulphates, use heat even if its on a cool setting you're not doing this natural hair thing properly. People forget that everyone's natural hair and routines are different.
Lies. Dead things fall off, if your remark was true we would HAVE no hair attached anywhere on our body. The only time you see branches on the floor is when they're cut off a tree of they've fallen off, otherwise they're still attached to that tree which produces fruit that most people enjoy or consume it's beautiful harvest.
Hair is not dead as long as the hair bulb produces a shaft that growns beyond the scalp then its alive. When the hair bulb dies so does the hair shaft. Hair goes through this continuous cycle until it actually dies usually from trauma, alopecia, old age etc.
I don't see anything wrong with hair typing I think 4c girls just get angry when someone uses 4c in a caption for views but then has 4a curls lol I have 4b/4a hair and there is definitely a huge difference between my hair and someone who has 4c I'm not even gonna lie 👀
Unpopular opinion in this comment section: I love wigs and I've even had people ask if my hair was real (which is weird, but it's happened). At the same time, I also love my natural hair and wear it out most of the time. You can actually enjoy both of these things at the same time. 😲 Also, grease doesn't work for my hair. Spraying a bit of detangler and a bit of cream works just fine and helps from keeping my already oily skin from breaking out. My two cents.
Used grease as a kid and stopped for who knows what reason. How can be ok using oil but not grease. They both seal the hair. I say master your own head of hair and do what it likes.
It's expensive to look good in general. I use wigs to grow my natural hair because my hair does not like me touching it all the time. But I also buy my organic Shea butter and stuff. My saving grace is that I'm vegan and I believe in like natural medicine so I eat most of the stuff used in hair diys. It was already in the kitchen
I don’t think it’s expensive to look good. You just have to know what your doing and where to bye stuff from. Also you are going to have to learn to do things yourself. For example nails, clothing, food ect
But it’s kinda how can it look like something it isn’t I have never in real life mistake false hair for real hair I always knew when I see a weave also I use to wear weave/wigs heavy before I came out of the habit. Also most people know it’s a wig also so it still looks like what it is.
I subscribed when you said the whole "wanting long hair means you self-hate" I completely agree..why is it bad that I want to have long hair as a preference? It's one thing if you bash short hair when you say you want long, but I just mind my own business and try to grow my hair longer. I like extremely short twa hair too, because then I can wear a baseball cap with it- like hat 2 da back-TLC-tomboy style. Also the hair typing system is the most triggering to me. God forbid you say you have a 4c hair strand and someone may attack you..just like you said "Acting like they don't know how to function in their lifestyle/ill in the head" LOL The porosity, density etc effects each hair type. This system just creates more division between Black people
Natural hair isn’t even that expensive for me. What’s expensive is getting a new wig, weave, braids, crochets, etc. every month. Just to take it out and put more in bc they hate their natural hair.
Love your thoughts. I used to grease my hair but stopped from following the myths that it clogs my pores from watching natural hair videos. When I tried natural oils it literally irritated my scalp and I had to stop using them. Needless to say, after watching this I just greased my hair for the first time in months. Thanks for your honesty.
Whoever downed greese should turn back around and leave just bc it doesn't work for u it doesn't mean it's a bad product. I was on greese my whole life (relaxed and natural) and decided to stop using it for 4 months after some YT girl said it was bad for your hair. All I'm saying is breakage breakage and breakage. I was quick to pick it back up again bc my ends were just dying from hunger and thirst. For someone with high porosity hair, greese is one of the best sealants you can use, can't change my mind
@@mariedjakakeitasoumah6046 If you need SUPER HEAVY sealing power go with Blue Magic for sure! I use the green one. If you want a lighter grease Softee is good.
Braids on your own hair is called plats (or however you spell it 🤦🏽♀️) My hair natural is cut into a mokawk. I love wearing my hair out. What’s the point of having hair and you never wear it? People doing too much to get long hair and not enjoying the hair that they have.
I could be in the minority here (or not considering a lot of these "unpopular" opinions are actually rather popular), but one of the main reasons I'm growing my hair out is more styling options with updos. I always liked how fancy (or simple) and creative you can be with them, but some are hard to do with shorter lengths, especially with thick (dense) hair like mine.
I think it's the addiction. My hair grows faster in protective hairstyles so I'm always like "more one month" all the time. But yea..not wearing your hair is pointless
@@jessicaribeiro8928 I understand completely. I feel this is the main reason I opted to cut my hair. I wore protective styles and wigs for many years and my hair grew past my pits, but once it was time for me to actually wear my hair out I felt almost a little insecure and didn’t know how to really do my hair. I would just wash and twist it up or braid it up. So I decided to cut it to start over to learn to love and style my hair and ended up with a Mohawk and I’m never turning back lol
i dont like wigs cause everytime i go outside with my natural hair to school (most ppl in my school that have natural hair have shorter hair and mine goes to my collarbone) people think i wear wigs because 1. im black 2. they arent used to seeing natural air that isnt short And it keeps making me think that all of these people wearing wigs are neglecting their real hair and if more of them wore their real hair it would show other people how theres many different lenghts and types of natural hair since whenever i ask my friends about curly or kinky air they only think of short hair thats cut over the ears
No one comes out with nothing new. I shud have 2 use 10 products 4 a twist out. I've tried shea moisture hibiscus line and thin butter cream and African pride Cantu....they have nothing on v05 aussie moist and grease. No cap. Once I stopped listening 2 u tube about cones and parabens I was happier.
@@Mrs_Canary omg LOVE aussi products that's all I use or Qxy products (I think that's what its called) and herbal essence all cheap brands but wonderful
Me too I was telling this to my brother's girlfriend. Sent this video to her to reinforce our conversation. Our hair doesn't have to be complicated. I just recently learned this and that my short hair is OKAY.
I think the problem with long hair is that people have a wrong perception of how long hair should look on black people. Thing is long hair is more likely a sign of good health than not * but* what people forget is that not all black long hair falls to your back naturally without stretching it especially "4c". Unfortunately black women tend to compare long black hair with long Caucasian or Asian hair that sways easily in the air. That is where the "self-hate" comes in. Also people have different rates of growth so youtubers promoting an "obsession" with long hair such as suggesting that a particular oil or routine made one's hair long can be misleading.
Unpopular opinion: in reference to people who get perms, there’s no such thing as “no time/ too busy to care for natural hair” I think people just put their attention to things other than hair care
When I was permed, hair care was soooo easy. All i did was wrap it nightly. If I wanted a fuller look I'd use large rollers. I'm natural 2.5 yrs with collar bone length hair and and still struggling.
Tiffany Minnis I was permed too, and I agree it is much more easier, but just like being natural it takes consistency. Making sure your hair isn’t dry, constantly touching up your new growth, etc. I believe both hair preferences require a set routine.
@@promisejimenez6350 true but my natural routine is WAAAY more time consuming than my perm routine was... my twist outs and rollersets as a natural don't last more than 2 days and that's weather permitting. I'm still holding on to natural though...currently with lemonade braids in and dreading taking it out and dealing with the dryness
@@tiffanyminnis1628 yess I can relate! That’s actually what I was talking about in my comment. Maintaining natural hair requires a more frequent/consistant routine
I used to say I didn’t start having scalp issues until I went natural. Consequently that’s the same time I stopped using grease. Now that I’ve gone back to grease (virgin hair fertilizer and blue magic) my scalp issues are 100% under control
FIRST AND FOREMOST, let's address THIS COMMENT/QUESTION because I feel like it is so stupid! : "what is the point of having long hair if you never wear it out?" like huh?!? Maybe I am just slow, but I honestly don't see the point of this question. Like...the point of having long, natural hair is to have long, natural hair. Who doesn't want to have long natural hair?! I’ll NEVER understand why people get so upset when someone keeps their natural hair in protective styles for long periods of time or when someone has a minimalistic routine. Like, it’s not your hair so what’s your problem? And the way type 4 girls achieve long, natural hair is by protective styling for long periods of time. I'm sorry (not really), but I never really wore my hair out before quarantine, and it has only amplified during the quarantine. Why does my hair need to be out and done just to go to Walmart or work (where it’s not required of me to dress professionally)? To me that’s stupid. Constantly manipulating your hair to look cute to go to Walmart? Now THAT'S dumb! The funny thing it's always the people who are always wondering why their hair isn't growing that say stuff like this. like, maybe if you left your hair alone, you would see the same results too! And then they REALLY kill me by saying "never wear it out." Like, who said I NEVER wear my hair out? Like you, i wear it out on special occasions and that is perfectly fine with me. and my hair thanks me!
💯 I am going to be doing kinky twists extensions to the end of the year. I'll keep them in 6 weeks at a time, have a 2-3 week break and the reinstall again. I realised I was just in my hair too damn much to see length retention.
@@mesidye it's a similar concept throughout many areas of life, i.e wealth people who have never had money think that if you have money you have to flaunt it, clothes with designer and huge labels, large gold chains around their neck, VERY VISIBLE SIGNS of wealth... The actually wealthy people walk around in polo t-shirts with their money in property, business and investments. The wealthy stay wealthy with money in the bank and the faux rich get poorer. Trying to flaunt is why people are hair-poor and no one gets that, our ancestors realised a long time ago that braids and cornrows is where it's at, so they flaunted with braids and cornrows, walking around with free hair was actually seen as you being lazy or not underdtanding proper hair care, unlike what it means today where we want to flaunt our length like the rest of the races and you're boring for keeping it in braids.
I don't know who where and why I didn't get a notification of this fire video! RU-vid please don't stop the greatness. YESSS!!! 1. Grease isn't the devil. 2. Black women aren't self-hating for wanting long hair (check out the history of black women in Africa). 3. Some people just have naturally thin edges, and baby hairs aren't necessary. But guys, isn't baby hair combed/brushed and laid a certain way with a product to get that look? Lol. *ENCORE ENCORE ENCORE* Love from a Tanzanian girl in South Africa.
Girl, I'm watching from Ghana, products are expensive AF. When I started my journey the only product I was seeing everywhere were cantu and shea moisture and well, y'all can testify the latter is expensive than the former but In my country both are expensive. Being new I had to save because I was led to think cheap products don't work😤. The first time I watched your 5products video, I knew I was wiping my account empty O expensive products that aren't even working for me but I had to use them cos ya girl saved to buy them. I just bought the herbal essence hello hydration shampoo and conditioner and I swear, no sulphate free shampoo left my hair as soft and shiny as this sulphate shampoo. So I'm back to using sulphates, coconut oil? (not for me) . That thing is trash In my hair and one unpopular opinion i have Is high porosity hair loves coconut and protein treatments. My hair haaaaaaates coconut, anything coconut and any protein treatment, whether its light protein whatever uhuh ✋, not in my hair. Idk, I'm just gonna end this comment. I'm getting emotional and this is getting long. Oh one more, the typing system is💩💩💩 Love u❤😘 Edit:Part 2 please
@@naa3018 😂😂had to save my two months salary oo😂😂. Sis haf suffered but thanks to government now, I received my allowance 😂😂😜and I had just enough to buy my new cheap products and they're working so well. I'm saving towards that TGIN goodness😂😂, that thing is expensive AF😂
Hey I use just Cantu Shea butter leave in and hair grease. They are cheap and effective. There are effective shampoos and conditioners out there too that are cheap. TGIN is too expensive 😂😂
I hate the hair type chart. It is too narrow when humans themselves are so genetically diverse. People look at that and use it as the ultimate guide to dictate their hair AND other peoples hair. People will argue back and forth over someone else's hair type. Type 4a, b and c are not the only hair types within the type 4 category. I feel like there is an entire alphabet within that category. Vivian here on youtube is the perfect example of someone with type 4 hair that isn't a, b or c. Ppl try to crack down more on the letters rather than the actual texture itself when texture is what's more relevant to hair care, not curl pattern.
Wait... ppl think black women who want their own hair to be long is fetishizing or self-hate... WHO EVER SAID OUR HAIR IS MEANT TO BE SHORT?! The ones who say that just didn’t put in the effort to know how to care for their hair better that all’s b/c if that’s the case, ppl with straighter hair need to stop cutting their hair and “embrace their long hair” 😂
preach sis!! I agree with all your points, especially VOLUME >>>>> DEFINITION. forced definition looks flat and ugly and the obsession with it in the natural hair community is disturbing.
Unpopular opinion: I don't think ppl should ever promote relaxers, if you want to get it, do it! But don't say to some 12 y/o kid that relaxers would be good for them or that relaxers aren't bad. And another unpopular opinion: ppl be just giving too much fvck about baby hairs, like it's okay to do them but pls normalize ppl not doing them. Not everyone was god blessed with baby hairs. I see some girls cutting their actual healthy long hair just to get that baby hair look, jeez wth are you doing?!
Interesting video. I've been noticing for a long time now that black women are mostly judged harshly on how they choose to wear their hair. It's like Catch 22, your damned if you do follow the crowd or you don't. Women who wear wigs get bashed just like women who have natural hair. I think we as black people in general may be the only ones who bash our own race when it comes to women's hair style. I think women should do whatever makes them feel comfortable without the fear of being judged & lift eachother up. Not every women is self hating, let folks live their life! Do what makes you happy & damn the rest cause people are gonna talk anyway. #LiveYourLife #ItsYourThing #DoWhatYouWantToDo 💃
The only things you should be concerned with are: porosity, density and strand size. I'm a chemist, I can tell you now that the 3c/4a etc. is completely false and non-science based. You can't go up to a cosmetic chemist and say "can I have a product for 4c hair?" They're going to look at you like you're crazy. That whole scheme is for marketing. They market to you what you give them. That's it. Learn to understand those 3 things I listed and your hair will FLOURISH. Curl pattern is only relevant for STYLING not retaining length. And I completely agree: moisture and protein balance is key to hair retention, and learn not to overmanipulate too often. Hope this helps to set the record straight for those in doubt/on the fence.
@@TheGodswork123 density is how much hair is on your head. Some people have low, medium, or high. Density cannot be changed because it's how many hairs you were born with. Strand size: fine, medium, or coarse. Hold a single hair strand up to a piece of thread. If it's thinner than the thread then you have fine hair, same size is medium, and if it's bigger you have coarse strands. I have low porosity coarse high density hair with multiple curl patterns and even some straight hair. My hair is almost waist length after 3 years of growth because ofthe principles and understanding how to retain length.
The LOIS hair type system is elite and that’s the tea 👏🏽 my hair would be a 2b in Andre’s system but my hair is thick and more compact almost kinky. Wavy/curly, Course, high density, low porosity hair explains my hair a lot more than “4b” 🙄
You had me laughing in this video, in a good way. It’s so refreshing to hear pure honesty, from a black woman who loves herself and loves her hair texture! I love your channel!
And I agreed with a lot of things you had to say in the video. Especially with the parabens and sulfates. Those are GREAT cleansing agents and my hair needs it especially since I wear my hair in cornrows for a month at a time. So when I take my hair down to wash it, I'm going to need those parabens and sulfates to make sure my scalp is cleansed well to last me for another month. My own unpopular opinion: EVERYONE should know how to do their own natural hair. like, it's literally the hair that grows out of your scalp. I understand if you are newly natural and are learning, but for people who have been natural for about a year plus...there is no excuse at all. And quarantine really exposed those girls that couldn't do their own natural hair because all the salons were shut down. and the people who are like, "natural hair is hard to do, leave them alone." like no, that is just a silly excuse for people to not learn how to do their hair. there are way too many youtube videos for people to keep using that excuse.
I just started wearing my natural hair out a few weeks ago annnnnd it's not that hard lol there are some things that I could do better but having all the natural hair content on YT & google at my disposal meant that I was able to learn so much and skip a lot of the mistakes that naturals make
So I've been wearing braids my entire life with the exception of the few times my Grams used to hot comb my hair and curl it. We all suffered from those grandma curls lol Anyway, I was still able to go to my cousin to get my hair done but I got annoyed with the idea of it so I legit just washed my hair, had some products I bought, detangled and twisted my hair up. Wore the twists for days and then did a twist out for a few days. Legit wore my bush for a week and a half before deciding to come back and do something else with it. So, you're right - EVERYONE should know how to do their own hair. And even if they're like me, who does not know how to cornrow and is relearning how to make neat flat twists, simple twisting or braiding the hair, high or low pony puffs (without the slicked down baby hairs cuz that's just not realistic for everyone), or even just wearing a bush while keeping the hair moisturized isn't that damn hard to do.
I agree with the short vs long hair. My regime is totally different from when it was short, its bra strap length now. I’ve noticed when my hair got to shoulder length my hair texture changed. I had a period where I had to trim my hair more because the oldest hair (towards the end) was rougher than the new hair. I don’t know about anybody else but I think the weight of the hair changes the texture and therefore the needs of the hair.
my hair def got looser when it got longer o.o like when it was short it looked legit 4c with mini coils all over and youd think it was 4b or something when it got looser when longer which is why i became unsure what hair type cause i didnt facture length into it and then front half is diff texture to back o.o like front is loose and kinda wiry where is back is maybe tighter and spongier? idk but i know back is way easier to detangle than the front lol
Baby hairs disturb me every single time. Like I watch people on youtube styling their wigs or installing it and they take the time to make these artificial baby hairs (no offense, do you, i can't tell anyone what to do with their hair) I just skip through
Every other race want long hair but when it’s us they talking for no reason I feel like black people are to hard with their community I don’t understand why they are like that
I went back to hair grease because that’s how my hair flourished when I was younger plus all those natural hair care products wasn’t enough to last and fit my budget. My Grandma put Frenchee to help with dandruff and styled my hair with blue magic and water. Dassit 🥴
I have to add that grease with mineral oil does clog my pores and gave me scalp issues 😓 ..i had a lot of build up, dandruff like flakes and fungus infection on a part of my scalp..just thought that was my scalp but I stopped mineral oil based grease( when mineral oil started getting bad reviews) and thank God my scalp is perfect..tea tree oil helped with the infection but never had those hot spots on my scalp. I’d rather use Shea butter or my oil mixture to grease my scalp. I personally believe mineral oil is bad for some of us from chronic use.. I’ve done a lot of research in this but to each his own . But let’s remember companies will pay other companies to write good things about mineral oil so they can keep using cheap bad products while making profit. Companies don’t want to use expensive oil as a base. They don’t really care about us 😂
You’re right. These expensive 20$ a bottle products use the same oils as hair grease , just watered down. Then these women have shelves full of half used expensive products that did nothing for their hair. & yes, I’ve never worn wigs. They look tacky & crunchy. Some of the natural hair wigs look ok. But I don’t have it in me to go around looking that foolish
My hair has never felt more moisturized as when I used hair grease. I had the definition and moisture. I was shooketh!!!!!!! Sulfates may be the missing link for some. 🤔 You’re right short and long hair definitely looks different. My hair falls now, even though it shrinks so you may not know it but it is not the same as when it was shorter. I miss my curly fro sometimes. My armpit hair shrinks to my ears unless stretched.
Janiya Gowdy No I used a leave in with it and surprisingly it didn’t feel too greasy. I used the Mielle Pomegranate & Honey Leave in. Wow that was in May, I journal my wash days so I can remember what works and with what. I know many have cancelled Mielle but I will use the rest of my coin until it’s gone. I’ve only tried 3 of her products. I only liked 2 of the 3. Not my favorite brand anyway, however, the blue magic worked perfectly well together with that leave in on my hair. It was super moisturized.
I watched a “natural hair guru” on RU-vid rant about who truly has 4c hair and who doesn’t on tik tok but has countless videos about not truly liking her hair. I think some judgmental naturals maybe insecure about their own texture and lash out by harassing others on their texture.
I agree that it’s expensive when it doesn’t need to be. We really don’t need all these products that companies keep making to have growth and moisturized hair and that’s why natural hair becomes expensive. When in reality it shouldn’t be. We really don’t “need” that much product wise compared to other hair types. I believe companies make all these extra stuff outside of shampoo, conditioner, leave in and styler just to have a way to take more of our money. But i think that even if the stuff we liked to use were expensive it would still be a lot cheaper if we were only getting the necessary things.
I'm a volume girl. I love mine big! Ppl used to tell me I needed a perm or flat iron. I don't get mad. I get sad bc the forced belief is a by product of racism.
honestly...the product junky part got me likeee. I really think we don't need to spend a whole lot of money on our hair or so. I too have been natural from birth but I realised this year that my hair which was quite long and dense at a point in time had suffered a major setback and wasn't growing any longer so I went in for all types of products plus hair vitamins and stuff to try to grow it back. I think I have come back to my senses to stop buying those expensive hair products and just listen to what my hair likes/wants. lmaaoo thanks for bringing me to the light. You go girl!!!
Ugh coconut oil is trash on our hair. Me and my daughters. Makes hair hard and dry. I wish it worked for us like it seems to work for others because its cheap and readily available.
i’m literally getting over the fact that i don’t have thick hair. it’s fine and thin and it sucks but i’m learning to love it. i can’t get volume to save my life. if i pick it out it gets dry and tangled and it becomes a mess and it starts to break. i do use hair grease and it’s definitely making my hair grow. i agree with this whole heartily, i also don’t wear weave because it breaks it off so bad, so i have no choice but to do protective styles with my natural hair. . . even then i don’t keep it in that long because it will tangle up and break off. . . this has definitely been a journey 😂😂😒🥰
Hey girl. How did you tie your scarf? That is so beautiful. Thanks for sharing your hair care regime. We all do not have to do the same thing that is so true.
I love how confident you are! You are so strong and so beautiful. I wish I was a strong as you when I was your age. You make me proud to be a 4c black woman. Thank you and God Bless you!
I know I agree natural hair don’t have to be expensive but what gets me women spends lots of money for a weave or a sew in and what ever else and that shit I feel like it’s expensive as hell I would never!!!
! This! That's what I be telling people!! They don't listen. As hair gets longer (well this was true for me too), it started growing down instead of out. As it gets longer it gets more weight to it, which is why it starts falling. Funny thing, my Jamaican relatives when my hair was growing out used to refer to it as "tall" to talk about length because of the way it grew
hair grease contains mineral oil and petrolatum ( think Vaseline) while it works in creating a moisture barrier and locking moisture in the hair, both mineral oil and petrolatum are comedogenic and do clog pores on the scalp but using grease on just the shaft of the hair is okay.
Vasty A. Cosmetics ( skincare and makeup) grade mineral oil and petrolatum are NON comedogenic but hair products have different standards and different grades (purity) for the same ingredients meaning they have a higher comedogenicity.
And you can wash it out with a sulfate or clarifying shampoo. If you don't shampoo your hair well between usage of course it will clog i find that to be most of peopels issues. Co washing not gonna wash away greaze.
Hello all. All I know is that I have three different types of hair, some really coily and some kinda coily and some softer. I’m a natural and I have a simple wash day, I wash deep condition, detangle and use hair grease, then dookie braid my hair. That’s it. Keep it simple is what I prefer. God bless
Society never considers not all black women desire long hair. I had longer hair growing up as a kid, outside of braids it was a lot of maintenance , in the way and I felt so much more free once I cut all of my hair off. Short has always been get up and go for me, low maintenance and gives me a more youthful look. Everybody doesn’t want 40 inch bundles or locs down their back.
I agree with everything you said. It's crazy how ppl overly obsess about ingredients in hair products. Commenting on videos in all caps about it, meanwhile their keyboard has fried chicken grease all over it, like...what you put inside matters more than what you put on the external. I have to make my own products especially conditioning and moisturizing products bc most store bought products have too much alcohol in them and it dries my hair out. The less harsh ones cost 22 bucks a jar, no ma'am, they wrong for that. I too keep my hair tucked in cute headwraps and loose buns making sure my ends are moisturized. I can't do weaves, wigs, braids at ALL. I take my time with detangling and leave my hair alone. Ppl ask me "what do you do? What products? Are you mixed?" No I put effort into my detangling, I keep it moisturized, and I let it be. No magic products, I'm black with black, and I learned a technique and stuck with it. Sorry this was long!🤐
Definitely a lot of great points, especially about short hair behaving way different than long hair even if the “same” texture. I always wanted to wear a fro but same as you, after a while it got to be too long to pick it out and do that. As well as a number of other styles becoming way harder with the extra length - like there becomes a point where trying to put in a weave/crochet or wear a wig is nigh on impossible or overly strenuous with a lotttt of hairs lol
