This is so trippy to listen to because I haven’t been fluent since I was a toddler living with my grandmother, but my brain is convinced it understands what he’s saying, even if I don’t.

Well, Romani has around 50 or so dialects. I don't doubt that you understand at least part of what he is saying.
@Swenthorian
@Swenthorian Год назад
It's probably because, by the age of 1, your brain has already honed in on the language(s) your family exposed you to. So you should be essentially as tuned-in to the sounds of Romani as you are to your other native language(s).

Fascinating! Sounds like a mixture of Hindi, Farsi, and Italian. The Roma migrated from the provinces of Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, to Eastern Europe and other parts of the world. What I am hearing are elements of Hindi such as Beesh for 20, Panch for 5, etc mixed with lots of Italian words, and a smattering of Farsi.

A bunch of them are from Sindh, the 'Sinti' Romanis. I don't know about mainly from gujarat. And you would be better off saying 'mixture of some Indian languages' because mere Hindi doesn't portray accuracy in this situation

He speaks a sort of standardized Romani chib, apt for radio and tv emissions. There are quite a lot of Romani dialects spoken in Kosovo, and this is understandable by all speakers (even if spoken by very few). Anyway, this sounds to me mainly as Arli Romani, which belongs to the Balkan group of dialects. Of course, I may be wrong about this last point, because I'm not a native speaker of Romani, and furthermore, I know Vlax Romani better than Balkan Romani.

Romani is kinda like a macrolanguage, its dialects are language-ish (like Sinti, Vlax, Balkan, Baltic...) which can have further more dialects (like Austrian Sinti, Italian Sinti, Albanian Sinti...). Though, Romani has daughter languages that are mostly Romani-mixed languages (like Erromintxela, Caló, Lomavren...). I say that because the Romani language is very variated and difficult to guess which is spoken as they are all more or less differents yet under the same macrolanguage. Romani is so interesting. ❤️

What people have to understand is that there are 2 subgroups of Romani dialects spoken in Eastern Europe. In countries like Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Estonia or Russia, the dialects are completely different to the dialects spoken in the Balkans, Hungary, Romania, Moldova, Czech Republic and Slovakia. The reasoning behind this that both groups came to Europe from different directions and have gradually adapted the accents of languages spoken from those regions and also new local words have been adapted which the Romani language didn’t have.

I have family that is gypsy and while I accept my roma heritage am not a gypsy by definition. I do however know how to speak Romani, and this guy has it pretty much right on. There are a few accent issues, and gender issues that he had such as saying certain words in masculine form when it would have been more proper to use a feminine form. I speak Romani all the time with my family, and have even gone as far as to teach my friends how to have at least a basic conversation with me in Romani, so that our conversations would not be eavesdropped on, as Romani is, while still really heavily used, it is not Widely used by a diverse group, but rather by a specific and singular group.

My dad told me when I was 5 to keep it secret that we are gypsies, because "the world hates us", he said. What a thing for a 5 year old to hear! I wish he was still here and could teach me more, but even if he was, unfortunately I think his parents stopped teaching the children to speak anything but English after some violent circumstances happened to my great uncle 😞 very sad they felt unsafe practicing their cultural customs and speaking their language. I try to learn on the internet but so many dialects to decipher can make it so hard. How cool that your family still speaks it!

This guy says he is Kosovan (though apparently he is speaking in a more standardized, auxiliary, TV-friendly dialect), so it obviously depends on the dialect, plus like any language it’s evolved to its surroundings. The roots of the words are mostly Indic, but the pronouns cation of Vlax Romani has been Slavicized to some degree, and newer words are also likely of Romance, Slavic, and Germanic descent

phonology is a pretty volatile thing. indo-aryan languages have distinct features like retroflexion because of contact with dravidian languages, which developed quite a bit later than most indians may think. (the older sections of the vedas most likely didnt have retroflex consonants originally). point being, indo-aryan languages should be able to lose their distinct phonology as easily as they obtained it.

Doesn't sound indian at all. Maybe because of his accent but I didn't find any sanskrit words in his speech.

It's definitely the accent obscuring some words, and the lexicon is undoubtedly very Romance-influenced. But you can still pick out some words if you try. The "bersh" he keeps saying, for instance, is "baras" or "varsh", meaning "year" in most Indo-Aryan languages.

I don't speak Romani, but I heard him use numbers 1,2,3,5. 1,2,3,4,5 is yek, dui, trin, shtar, panch. Hindi: ek, do, tin, char, panch. 1 in farsi is yek, and 4 in sanskrit is chatvaras.

Romany lost the retroflexes and breathy voiced aspirates which give Indian lamguages their distinct sound. Typologically too it is thoroughly Balkanized. The primary culprit is Greek which the pre-Roma encountered in Anatolia before consolidating into a coherent ethnic group and entering the Balkans.

Romani is an Indic (Indo-Aryan) language, brought to Europe after a long series of migrations from Medieval India.

@@enishaljin9692 Thanks - yes, I understand that the Roma people have very diverse origins - in this case, though, I was just referring to the classification of the Romani language group, which has long been established as part of the Indo-Aryan language family, closely related to Punjabi, Sindhi, Hindi, Gujarati, etc., of course with borrowings from several languages of the Middle East/Mesopotamia and Europe during the long migrations.

Common misconception. Romani are a people. Not the place they're from. Some use the derogatory term gyspy instead.

romani still sounds like romanian for an outsider. especially because in this specific dialect, there are a lot of latin words. even i understood what he was talking and i dont even speak romani, hindi or urdu at all.
