You are so right. The comparison with Babe Ruth is insulting to Ohtani and the fans today. I don't wish to smear the historical greats like Ruth, but the Ruth era was so different it's hardly worth a serious comparison, and Ruth didn't pitch and hit at a high level for more than a year or so at best. He was a very good pitcher with the Red Sox but not that great as a hitter, then in all those years with the Yankees he only pitched in a total of four games but was a great hitter (for the era). Listen to the Colin Cowherd commentary on this subject. Wilbon doesn't know the history that he claims to be honoring and continues to distort this faulty comparison between Ohtani and Ruth.

Yup Babe Ruth never played both ways for a full season. A better comparison would be the 2018 season where Ohtani had to shut down halfway through the season because of that TJ surgery that was going to be needed where Ohtani just went up to hit the remainder of the year Yet that's a, "season" most don't count as Ohtani playing both ways

Where you're wrong Wilbon is that Babe Ruth did it against segregated competition that couldn't even throw 90 MPH and drank beers and smoke cigarettes. Also, looking at ERA+ and OPS+ in the years where he played two ways he never, ever was as dominant as Ohtani is right now on both sides at the same time. I remember early on when the Ruth family was downplaying Ohtanis exploits. I haven't heard from them in year's.

I'm glad that sports commentators like these two are making a point of acknowledging the historical greatness and uniqueness of Shohei Ohtani. But the comparison with Babe Ruth is ridiculous, and it's time to let go of that. Wilbon claims to be showing respect and honoring the historical greatness of Ruth, but he actually demonstrates his own ignorance of the Ruth career as well as failing to talk about the huge difference between the two eras in terms of player levels and limitations of the era in which Ruth played. I don't wish to smear the historical greats like Ruth, but the Ruth era was so different it's hardly worth a serious comparison. For one thing, Ruth didn't pitch and hit simultaneously at a high level for more than a year or so at best. He was a very good pitcher with the Red Sox but not that great as a hitter, then in all those years with the Yankees he only pitched in a total of four games but was a great hitter (for the era). Listen to the Colin Cowherd commentary on this subject; it's a powerful argument that demolishes the comparison with Ruth. Wilbon doesn't know the history that he claims to be honoring and continues to distort this faulty comparison between Ohtani and Ruth. And shockingly, he fails to point out that the small number of teams in major league baseball during Ruth's time had NO black, Latino or other players of color, and the vast majority of players were not even full-time at the sport. Today's athletes are vastly superior in physical prowess, training regimens, talent and in almost every respect compared to 95% of the Ruth era players. Ohtani is a phenomenal athlete doing something no one else has done in MLB history against the very best athletes the sport has ever produced.

I somewhat disagree with Wilbon and say that Ruth *almost* pulled it off doing both, but only in 1 yr: in 1919, his final yr at Boston. He led league in HRs (29) but note he only pitched in 17 gms, which is less than Ohtani's 28 last yr and far less than his peak of 44 in 1916. Still a Herculian effort by any standard...but it goes to show how absurdly difficult it is to do both in any era.

As it grows, the economic that goes with it grows and there are just more incentives for people to compete at the highest level. Ohtani doesn't have as many wins as Ruth but he has more seasons where hes pitched and hit at the same time.

For $20,000,000 pay in 162 game is $19,012,3456 in 154 games. That ain't gonna happen. Now if the player do keep the same pay that just means the cost of things at games will go up a little to cover that same 162 game schedule pay. Tv deals are based off 162 game schedule too. There goes that pay.

Ohtani is a great player but better let him play a complete career before making comparisons. Also, let him play the outfield between pitching outings and see how he does.

Wanna talk about cheating? How about the Dodgers with Jackie Robinson - only team with a black guy? How is that fair?

Other teams should have allowed black players on their teams sooner then.

I agree with most that Shohei is the best. What would he be doing if he faced plumbers and electricians every day like Ruth? He would be unstoppable.

I would give 1.2billion over 12 years. Shohei will the first billion Dollar Babe! 12 Years of Shohei is gonna be worth Billions to the club And make that Club as Famous as the Yankees. Babe Ruth did it for the Yankees. Shonei can do it for The Angels if they have the Vision.

Baseball kept out a good portion of homegrown talented players back then(Negro Leagues)made it kinda watered-down for Ruth pitching wise even more credit to Ohtani best players in the world with unlimited resources to make this impossible and he's still doing it

Oh please Sho is way better than Ruth. Ruth was playing with plummers and farmers back then. Ruth happened to be white so he's glorified.

I see your point about click bait but it's the same connotation to the extent that it's using ridiculous statement to try to catch the attention of audience.

These analyst really talking like they were alive to watch babe Ruth hit and pitch . Please stop comparing ohtani to Ruth it's a disgrace. Babe Ruth was prob hitting nothing but 80 mph fastball only while ohtani is hitting 9 different pitches out of the ballpark. And the hitters these days is at least 50x better than the hitters if Ruth time.
