Wilbur may have been a pig, but Fern loved him the way we love our dogs and cats. They’re more than just a pet, they’re family and losing them is hard. It’s heartbreaking.
As a kid, I've always hated that Wilber got taken from Fern just because pigs back then weren't to be considered as pets. Pigs were just to be treated as live stock and eventually killed for food. I know Fern's father told her in the book that Wilber isn't far away and that she can still visit him anytime. But it's still heartbreaking for Fern because she and Wilber became attached to each other. The hardest facts in life is that some parents aren't kind enough to let their kids keep some animals as pets.
Especially since he only let her keep him to teach her a lesson about how hard it is to take care of a baby pig. Then when she actually did it, suddenly he didn’t mind selling him for money. He wouldn’t have even had a pig to sell if it wasn’t for Fern.
But Mrs. Phyllis Arable didn’t like it. She wanted Fern to stay in the yard because Phyllis thought that Fern was alone while at Mr. Homer Zuckerman’s barn!
@@LydFraz And kids disobey when they don’t like those rules because they can only find out the purpose of rules the hard way (although some kids might be exceptions). Fern was somewhat breaking rules when hanging out at her uncle Homer Zuckerman’s barn every so often, but she eventually grew up and understood that Mr. Zuckerman’s barn was always a barn and that Wilbur never got murdered or eaten.
