I western Canada certain rivers bordering farmlands were drying up. The Indigenous People said to bring back the beaver. The farmers listened and the problem was solved. Never underestimate the power of diversity in your ecosystem. 💕

I'm old enough to remember seeing them while canoeing on the Kankakee River as a kid. Can't even tell you how many dams I dragged that canoe over! Now the entire Midwest is essentially a desert. Yes, there's still stuff growing on top. But 70 years of corn monoculture has taken its toll...

what i like is that it is the American beaver not EuroAsian, so it is like a little ambassador of nature or a Canadian construction worker going to the UK for work. if you want to argue they are both beavers they can't have children together they have different chromosome counts. American beaver and EuroAsian beaver are not the same you are introducing American beavers to Europe if you want to get technical about it.

It's like when they put wolves back into Yellowstone National Park. I don't think they expected it, but wolves actually improved the environment for other species simply by controlling the elk & reducing elk impacts on vegetation.

Its much safer to reintroduce predators ecologically speaking because they are at the top of the food chain and always lower in number. Lower numbers to monitor, lower impact on and higher adaptability to environments, and a much longer gestation from prey animals means their numbers and impacts can be monitored, understood more easily, and typically self regulate. When predators outpace prey, some move out, some die off, then prey has a boom generation and the cycle repeats without more human involvement.
@MrLoobu
@MrLoobu 3 года назад
Ironic because humans killed all the predators in most places preemptively due to understanding their personal danger rather than their ecological importance. Responsibly infrequent killing (for food) is as important a part of conservation as anything, in a real ecosystem.

Introduced into Yellowstone.....When threatened by wolves, deer don't graze as much and move around more, aerating the soil. Grass and Trees: As a result of the deer's changed eating habits, the grassy valleys regenerated. ... Beavers and other animals: Trees and vegetation also allowed beaver populations to flourish.

@@saycat6758 thank you for the offer but it won‘t be necessary. They are reproducing and expanding their territories quite nicely. According to data from 2017-2019, from the 12 provinces 11 now have resident beavers and the last province was expected to get them within 5 years. Otters are in a similar situation. Reintroduced in 2002 and now resident in half of the provinces and still expanding their territories. Wolves are a different matter. They first returned on their own about 5 years ago and are slowly settling in right now. It looks promising. Bears and elks (called moose in North America) are a whole different story. We have none in the wild and it‘s not likely we will. This country is probably too densely populated for them to have a suitably large enough habitat. But you never know because that‘s what we thought about wolves too and they found their way back.

@@JoshPod001 Mr & Mrs Beaver are characters from CS Lewis' children's novel 'Narnia Chronicles' - 'The Lion, Witch & The Wardrobe' in particular. The beavers have built a damn on a river, on the edge of the wood not far from Cair Paravel (the White Witch's castle House), & have a cosy home there. Mr Beaver is expert at intelligence gathering & counter-surveillance. He is also an excellent trout catcher. Mrs Beaver is proficient in machine sewing & hospitality. Both operate a kind of surveillance post & safety house in opposition to the White Witch's tyrannical rule over Narnia - the land under her enchantment (in which as a result of her evil spell, is always winter but never Christmas). The Beavers chiefly combat Maugrim, the White Witch's Captain of Secret Police, & his network of spies.

In 1953 the beaver population in Yellowstone was very small with only 8 colonies, a result of over hunting in the 1800’s and declining riverside habitat (too much grazing from the huge herds of grazers because of no wolves). 130 beavers were introduced in the 90’s and the population has grown to over 100 colonies. Wolf reintroduction is believed to have played an important role in their comeback.

In the US the EPA sponsors beavers in areas needing flood control. This needs close supervision, but it works well. They work for nothing and don’t draw pensions. However about 25 years ago a pair of beavers showed up at a couple’s home around the corner from us. These people had perhaps 5 acres, a picturesque pond and a wide lawn. Their neighbors warned them not to notify the DEC, but to take a .22 rifle and shoot both of them. They called the DEC and were told to do nothing about the beavers that the DEC would install a beaver-dam-proof culvert to drain the water. It wasn’t long before he pond had grown to flood their lawn and the entire first floor of their house. The DEC sponsored an environmental impact study, called for bids on the project, approved plans for a beaver-dam-proof culvert and, finally, built it. It works fine.

It's always good to sort your beaver problems quietly and efficiently.

Umm yeah I was curious about his meaning on that to be honest. Because here in the USA. Sorting quietly, efficient, and completely is never a good result! Lol
