Freshwater Creek is a popular creek for locals to swim in, running down stream from Crystal Cascades 15-20kms from Cains city centre in the hills down through Redlynch Valley and flows through to the Barron River, it has shallow running streams that fall into deep pools, that is what I concentrated on in this video, the deeper pockets are home to larger fish like Sooty Grunter (Hephaestus fuliginosus), Jungle Perch (Kuhlia rupestris), Oxeye Herring also known as Tarpon (Megalops cyprinoides), and large Mouth Almighty (Glossamia aprion), some of the larger predatory fish, then in the shallows fish like Eastern Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia splendida subsp. splendida), Pacific Blue-eye (Pseudomugil signifer), Eel-tailed catfish (Tandanus tandanus), and nice little bottom dwellers like the Roman-Nose Goby (Awaous acritosus), the turtle in the video is a Saw-shelled Turtle (Wollumbinia latisternum), for more information on these species I have put links bellow.

I was snorkelling near crystal cascades the other day. Heaps of jungle perch, West African zebra tilapia/cichlid (unfortunately), eastern rainbow fish, one mangrove jack (which I didn’t expect), and two other species that I don’t know (one looked like a live-bearer of some sort and the other a speckled catfish/groundfeeder?). I snorkelled the outer GBR from Port Douglas a few days before and enjoyed snorkelling Freshwater Creek just as much. Pretty special for someone from cold coastal Victoria. Walking the creek with the snorkel on, ears above the surface; listening to the birds and the insects over the bubbling of the stream. An amazing state of peace and wonder. It's a nice little spot that is close to town, there are feral guppies and platy there, the catfish type fish could of been one of the gobby species, maybe Roman-Nose Goby (Awaous acritosus) they are pretty common around the area.

theres some good creeks near Mackay in north qld if your ever driving through. You'll see snakehead gudgeon, spangled perch, sooty grunter, barramundi, jungle perch, tarpon and the list goes on @Australian biotopes

Thanks, I actually used. to work there many years ago for awhile, I haven't stopped there since I've had my camera gear though, maybe again one day, I hit Cairns and surround this year as I know a lot of spots there and they are pretty much always clear and full of cool fish, I've always wanted to go back and film, it never disappoints, I hope to cover as much as I can eventually again with a camera this time but it all costs money, I thought people would like to see some of our bigger natives 🙂🐠
