Hey Al. I am glad you are feeling well enough to get back out into the wild. I appreciate all of your videos as they give me the positivity I need to push myself out of my comfort zone and try new things. I tried my first winter wild camp up on the hills between Kettlewell and Arncliffe on the Friday just passed. Forcast was -12°C with wind chill. Ice formed on inside and outside of the tent but managed to stay warmish. Woke up to a beautiful sunrise so well worth it. Thanks for the inspiration.

Great watch. I had the pleasure of walking up Pen Y Fan with Hari and Krish last winter in aweful conditions and chew the fat over a coffee. A few other SAS legends present as well. Really lovely and humble people and what Hari achieved this year was amazing

Good back to basics video. For improved pie cooking add a layer of tin foil around pies and a few cm of water at the bottom, it becomes a steamer. Hope your over the dreaded man flu…

Hi Al, great idea with the pie oven, I’m walking the West Highland Way solo and wild camping in April 2024. So the pie oven is a great idea for some parts of the journey, thanks for that idea. Good to see you on the mend Al. Being outside in nature is the best tonic. Brings a smile to my face as well and as soon as I’ve made my mind up about getting out at the weekend (usually after watching one of your videos) my mood instantly picks up and just eager to get out no matter what the weather. I was looking forward to see how those pies would turn out. I suspected the heat might be too high but it turned out OK. I was thinking a while ago that pies would do well for the first two days of a hike instead of those nasty dehydrated meals.

Yesterday in the middle of the afternoon the wind chill was 21 degrees, or -6 C--and this is just the first cold snap of the winter. It certainly gave me a new appreciation for winter camping! Knowing the weather you camp in, it's nice to know you have some really outstanding gear to keep you safe. I loved this video, and your castle. Reminds me of the tower video, which was also a favorite. (Am I correct in thinking that mid-summer, this place would be a resort for midges?)

It always brightens my day to see a new video. Buy you and of course when you add blue just that much more brightness. I agree with one other person saying maybe a bit of water at the bottom, no higher than the first rock kind of steaming the pies might have gotten them warm through the center. You make your videos sound so easy. But don't you have to spend time editing? Your videos are amazing!

I'm looking to bivvy camp this year with my dog but was wondering without the enclosure of a tent, where my dog is going to sleep without him getting him cold or more importantly running off. Any advice would be appreciated.

Al, great food idea, how long were they in for? I have hesitated too long about cooking an omelette on Greaseproof paper, which is like a quiche. Regarding pies, I'm a bit worried about reheated meat's & ensuring the temperature is correct. Also, when we were all younger great adventures could be 500 yards from your house, building a den in scrubland, we don't need to be up a hill to appreciate nature and our surroundings. Thanks for the video!

I wouldnt able to enjoy being out after the 2.8k for gear 😂😂 ex military stuff surplus tried and tested for awaaaaaay less. Ask if you want to know what to buy and that'll include down kit.

Yes mostly the cheap gear will do the job but it’s aimed more for expeditions and endurance events. You wouldn’t carry art surplus for that😬
