I have wild camped almost every week for an entire year. I have made plenty of mistakes along the way and learned quite a bit. I hope that this video might help you if you are thinking about wild camping. These are all my opinions, they may not be the best practices but it is what I have found that works for me. There is more to wild camping than I mentioned within this video so if you do have any questions that I didn't cover, pop them in the comments below and I will do my best to help you out 🙂⛺

I got tired of carrying 8-10kg on my back so I've started using an 82L shopping trolley to carry all my wild camping gear ! I pack up my backpack and then put the whole pack into the trolley. So far its working out great, but I do need to look into swapping the wheels out for bigger ones with inner tubes.

1 year already! Fair play for sharing all your adventures with us. Some great tips in the video for anyone starting out. Another would be to purchase a sleeping bag liner. It weighs almost nothing, is very cheap & takes up very little room in your rucksack. It should help to add more heat retention to your bag. Keep up the good work. 🏕️

Judging by the amount of gear I have you would swear I had been camping for ten years 😄 It is definitely worth having a liner, I use an aegismax liner which uses a thermolite material and increases the performance of the bag by 5-8⁰ Thanks for mentioning it, I know that a lot of people read through the comments so they'll be able to see yours. After having reviewed your video on the backpach, I found one! It arrived last week from a vendor in Finland. Very pleased with it! This video on packing your gear in the bag will be very helpful when I sort out my gear. I live in a rural unpopulated area of the northeast in North America The system will make a perfect "72 hour Get Home Bag" to keep in the trunk of my car with other winter emergency gear in the event that I have to abandon my car for some and get to safety/home on foot. Another great video Jason , as always a great source of information . After my first wild camp last year , I made a list as soon as I got home of what I thought worked and what definitely did not ! To this day I check it and I would recommend anyone going wild camping should try doing it as well .,adding to it or taking from it .I'm still in the novice stage but well hooked ! Thanks again !

Thanks very much. That's a good idea to help refine your gear. I'm still making tweaks to my gear which I'm sure will always be the case but I need to just head out and use what I have now this year . I've heard some people tale a little notepad so if they realise they're low on gas or whatever they can make a note of it while they are out

Great video yet again!! Tnx for the tips, ear plugs work wonders, I lost one one night (camping in the garden 😂 just starting camping) and I had no way of finding the flipping thing, I gave up looking for it, then a passing lorry scared the life out of me at about 5:30, still was enjoyable night, was going tonight but we got a weather warning for the night, so I'm at home watching you RAMBLING ON about advice, tnx

😄 there was one night I spent in the woods that was very calm. I decided not to bother with the ear plugs. I slept for about an hour when a fox screamed and I almost shat myself 😄 Fair play, I don't trust forecasts but I always listen to weather warnings. I hope you get out soon, that's a good tip to start in your garden. It gives you a chance to test the gear and get used to pitching the tent etc. Thanks again for watching the videos. I was going to subscribe.. but I just couldn't be arsed 😂. No seriously bro I subscribed.. I'm looking to get into doing wild.. ex military and I hate ppl. I used to go camping a lot as a teenager but haven't done anything in the past 20 years recently just got back from Ukraine . So I am looking forward to getting out just got myself some bits and bobs on a budget of course.. everything like this needs to be planned precisionly. So I'm looking for the wild camping in North Yorkshire.. I don't want to drive so I will be travelling by train.. it saves in the middle night chickening out and driving home at least this way I'm there until the next day .. so yeah I'm looking on RU-vid and came across the channel love you sense of humour not taking everything too seriously like everyone else . Jason, nothing like learning on the job😊 Definitely takes time and experience to sort out what works best and it is a continual process of refining the gear list. Resisting the temptation to buy more is a great skill to have😊 The only drawback with the earplugs is that you won't hear the deer stumbling into the tent🦌😊 Great job over the last year👍

I've bought some other gear this week in the attempt to refine what I have. It's never ending 😄 That is a draw back although one night I didn't wear the earplugs going to sleep and around 1am a fox screamed and I almost died 😱😄 Thanks very much Gerry, enjoy the rest of your weekend 👍⛺

Great tips, those soft ground pegs look great. Must try get a set. Should bring a dog then wont have to worry about any animals (I can lend you one who sits with her paw up when she sees dear crying at me to let her off the lead). Good shout on the ferro rod too, I remember years ago taking some fire lighters from home out, definately cheating but worked a charm. With the Amazon link, can you put anything on there? Might be upgrading a bit of gear soon so more than happy to use a link if it helps out.

Those pegs are class, they are a copy of the MSR cyclone pegs but the Naturehike version is much cheaper to buy and still solid. 😄 I would love to bring a dog along but the way things are there aren't many hikes where dogs are allowed unfortunately and I wouldn't want to head off without them. If you click on a link, that takes you over to amazon then as far as I know I would get a small commission on whatever you buy at that stage even if I never recommended it, but I would get a slightly bigger commission if you bought the item the link was for. It would be a really great help, thank you very much for even thinking of doing that. I've bought some more bits of gear myself this week, I just can't help myself 😄

Thanks Brian, I have been using mountain forecast. It is probably the most accurate information but still have found it gets it wrong quite often 😄 Now I have a quick look and then I just head out and hope for the best once there are no weather warnings in place 😄⛺

Great video Jason. I agree wholeheartedly about how it's best not to spend a lot when you first start out. I got most of my bits from Ali Express and once I decide that I enjoyed it, it was great upgrading equipment though I still use most of my Ali Express stuff. The tip about adding the foam mat and reflective one is useful. It's odd how until someone says over things, you never think about them but once you hear them, you wonder why you never thought of something so obvious. Subscribed to your channl

Good tips. I have the Cloud Up 2 and it just survived 50 mph winds and heavy rain in Snowdonia last weekend, great tent but I miss the side entrance of other tents. My top camping tip - a plastic bottle to pee in without getting out of your sleeping bag and losing the heat, takes some practice, smoothie bottles are good.

Yeah I think I would miss that too, they're solid tents from the sounds of it and for the money you can't go wrong. I have yet to try that myself 😄 I have heard that a lot of people do it but I may hive it a whirl sometime. It is no craic having to get out into the cold in the middle of the night for a whizz 😄

Great tips Jason! You've come a long way from your fears of death by deer. Lol I think we all start out backpacking with fears that we later discover aren't really so much of concern later on. Mine was sleeping through the on set of hypothermia. I later found out that there's no way I'm not waking up to notice I was freezing to death. 🤣 Pretty sure I'll know about it.

😄 I would say that you were completely justified in worrying about hypothermia. I've seen where you camp and I get cold looking at it 😄 I still have my moments where something freaks me out but that's all part of the experience ⛺

Love your videos Jason, Down to earth and so honest, have you thought about starting a Patreon ? could do extra videos for members and is a great income to further your channel. its a great idea to do some live streaming videos which are so popular and people can donat on a live chat. Thanks Martin, I haven't looked into starting a Patreon yet. It wouldn't be fair of me to start one and have people join up because I just wouldn't have the time to do extra content with work etc and I would want to be sure I can provide some value for money if that makes sense. At the moment I'm working toward getting ahead on the videos and sustaining that so that there is a video out each week plus there is a few other bits I am working on to improve the videos. When you do, I highly recommend SCARPA TERRA GTX. They’re not cheap in Australia but are quality and durable. Comfortable on the first day and I will get them again.

Thanks for sharing, some nice tips! I hope you didn't get into trouble with the in laws. Gear question: do you use a rain cover on your bag when it's raining, or do you just rely on the dry bags and not worry about the pack getting wet? Also: when cooking in the vestibule of the LanShan 2, should you be worried about e.g. hot air and fumes accumulating in the tent?

I don't normally use a rain cover, in fact I don't think I ever have. The only time I might use it is if knew there was going to be persistent rain while I was hiking. Having all of my gear in dry bags means that I don't have to worry and it's only the pack itself getting wet which doesn't bother me. For extra protection you could get a pack liner which is a 60L dry bag that goes in and lines the interior of the bag. You could also use a normal bin bag for that too but in both cases I would always use the individual dry bags, plus it keeps things tidy and organised. The main worry about cooking inside a vestibule would be Carbon Monoxide and condensation so you would need to be sure to have plenty of ventilation. The Lanshan has a good 8 inch gap from the bottom of the flysheet to the ground so there is good airflow. If you can at all, leave the outer door open. Also be careful if you are using a fire steel inside the vestibule as a spark landing on the tent would damage the tent and I wouldn't have the source of the heat too close to the flysheet as it may get damaged. The main thing is to have plenty of ventilation. Thanks very much for watching. All the best over the weekend, have a good one 👍

@@xzorby I forgot to say that you don't have to use dry bags for the smaller items, you could use zip lock bags to save on the cost and they do the same job. Jason, How are you finding the Lanshan 2 tent one year on? Like you I have the Cloud Peak 2 but am looking for a lightweight option for hiking in the summer. If I recall you were experiencing some condensation issues in the past? Ps Good informative video from a newbie ( like myself ) 😀

I love my Lanshan 2, this is the original with a four season inner. It wouldn't be as strong as the cloud peak 2 in high wind, saying that it has held up in some pretty bad conditions. If I could go back, I wouldn't bother doing the modifications on it as it is a solid tent without them. I also have the Lanshan 1 Pro which is where I had condensation issues. I'll try that out over the summer and see if it's any better but it is quite cramped inside for headroom. I would avoid the Pro version of the Lanshan 2 because of condensation. My Lanshan 2 hasn't had any condensation issues to speak of and it is still my favourite tent 🙂 Thanks very much, I could have rambled on forever about camping and all the gear 😄 Have a good weekend 👍⛺

@@patienceman I got mine from aliexpress. I don't think camperlists deliver to Ireland but I could be wrong. I've heard that they're a good company. As far as I remember the seams are taped but I seam sealed mine to be sure because there was mixed information on whether you needed to or not and being new to camping I wanted to be sure I stayed dry... 😄 on my first ever camp I had an irrational fear of deer stumbling in to the tent in the night but the likely hood of that happening is extremely low. I never camp on an animal trail but sometimes they can be close by and there's often some form of faeces about no natter where you look 😄
