Does lightweight camping gear have to be expensive? I’ve put together a lightweight budget wild camping setup for less than £500, but is it any good?

I have the Lanshan 2 Pro & camped out in -2 with my daughter 3 weeks ago, the condensation was ridiculous & our sleeping bags were damp too & kept being dripped on. I bought us each an OEX Bush Bivvi bag (approx 380g & £45) to protect our sleeping bags from the condensation. We just tried them out in the Peak District at -2° in snow but also left the outside doors to the lanshan tied back & just the mesh doors zipped shut, between the bivvy bags & keeping the doors open for better ventilation we had no condensation at all. We also use Osprey Levity 60 bags which weigh about 800g, they are so comfy & we did the 97 mile West Highland Way last summer carrying 12kg & didn't even know I was carrying mine. X

Yes I think air flow is key with these tents. There was no wind on this one and lots of moisture in the air so I had my own rain system going on inside. So glad I had my body bag! I do like the look of the 2 pro for the extra space 👍
@daleyoutdoors
@daleyoutdoors 2 года назад
@@Chris66able As with most things it fits a purpose. I'll only use it in warmer weather from now on due to the condensation that builds in the wet.
@niks_healthy_lifestyle1691
@niks_healthy_lifestyle1691 2 года назад
@@Chris66able I asked on a site how to reduce condensation & everyone said it can't be stopped, they get it inside their £800 tents, big branded tents too. It's science, condensation is caused when warm meets cold air, doesn't matter if you're in a house & your windows get condensation, a car or a tent. Doesn't make the house, the car or the tent useless.

I think the Lanshan 1 Plus (double walled tent) works out much better for UK (non-summer) conditions than the Pro. Costs a bit less and only weighs a little more (~200g), but it has better ventilation because no mesh (bug net) around the lower sides and will keep in a couple degrees more heat in the winter.
@heymega4779

I have the original (nylon) version of this backpack, bought two years ago. The space between the straps on top is about 8cm/3", so I doubt they did any changes recently. I think the main issue for Luke from TOGR is simply that the pack is too long for his torso. I'm 185cm/6'1", and have a torso length of 51cm/20", and still the sternum strap sits a bit low. No issues with the shoulder straps though. There really is not much you can do for torso length on this pack. You can move the hip belt about 5cm/2" up or down by loosening the velcro in the sleeve, but that's basically it.

This backpack is Nylon though, where as the QiDian is made from UHMWPE which is off-brand Dyneema. Dyneema is much stronger and more waterproof/doesn’t let water soak in or through at all. But having a frame is probably nice on the larger bag. I’d be curious about a direct comparison, lets say holding a shower on them both for a while and seeing which one performs better in the rain. For science 🤔😅
@daleyoutdoors
@daleyoutdoors 2 года назад
Wouldn’t be much of an experiment - the NatureHike needs the rain cover. The 3F material is waterproof but the seams aren’t. I think Mr Wild Wales did a comparison of them both recently 👍

Just a quick question. Why light your stove before you have the pot ion place? Loss of heat and energy? They all seem to do it for their videos but for the sake of conserving fuel and packed-out energy, it doesn't make sense. A good wild camp depends on sufficient supplies of food, water and energy. The other stuff is 'to taste'. Thanks for an honest, helpful video.
@daleyoutdoors

I find it easier to light without the pot on it. You won’t lose much in the half a second it takes to put the pit on once it’s lit.

I would say £100 is achievable (£150 more realistic + more options) but you may want to look for used items and compromise on comfort as well. I picked up a Alps Lynx 1 on Ebay for £40 a while back. It is an amazing tent. You can get budget sleeping bags quite cheap these days (not winter ones of course), and foam mats are pretty inexpensive. Ultimately as long as you keep warm and dry, you are in a good place, and you can achieve this without breaking the bank.

Bought this and disappointed that it's not in any way a genuine 60L in size. Their own stated dimensions for the 60L multiple to 31L (I should have checked that), and the expansion bits are in no way adding another 30L when the main bit is full. I've measured it and filled it and it's nowhere near 60L (yes it's the 60L 1.2kg version). It's *much* smaller than another 60L pack I have, and is actually slightly smaller than a 40L pack I have.

What diameter is your gas cannisters? I have a few, which are 110mm, which is a pity as the larger Lixada pots are only 100mm, so obviously too small to nest the cannister inside. Maybe there are small cannisters. Currently I just use a small camping pot (from an old set of 3) but there's no lid and I need to carry a wee pot holder too. I really fancied a more modern titanium pot
