My initial overview of this new 2021 budget ultralight tent offering from 3F UL Gear, the LANSHAN 1.
Just giving my initial thoughts on the tents design and make a few comments on things that I would maybe recommend they change in the future to make it even better. However, it looks a well-made tent and I am really looking forward to taking it out to test in the real world.
The Lanshan 1 is a very lightweight and affordable tent and an excellent option for those wanting to start out in the world of wild camping and backpacking. The tent is a trekking pole setup which means the tent comes in at an overall weight of around 840 grams and you use one of your own trekking poles to set it up and give it structure. Note that you can also purchase a separate carbon fibre centre pole for it if you prefer to not use trekking poles.
The Difference Between Lanshan And Lanshan Pro:
1. Lanshan is double-layer. Its inner tent is separated from the rainfly. While the Lanshan Pro is single-layer, and its inner tent is stitched together with the rainfly.
2. Lanshan is made from 15d single-coated silicon fabric, while the Lanshan Pro is made from 20d double-coated silicon fabric which is a little lighter and stronger.
PLS NOTE:
The 3-season comes with an inner tent made from nylon mesh which is thin and breathable. So 3-season tents are more suitable for summer camping.
The 4-season comes with an inner tent made from nylon cloth which is thick and high-density, and it provides more protection from wind and draughts coming through.
This tent also needs to be seam-sealed by yourself! to ensure it is fully waterproof before use.

Brilliant initial review you. addressed every point or issue I have with this tent. Great tents for the money though I have the two man pro version my mate got the 1 man 2021updated longer version of the standard version you have here. The inner mesh going half way is such a trick they have missed in these models. Makes them a more genuine 3 season tent then

I’m with you on the 1/2 & 1/2 inner & T door. I got mine through the other week and after a night in the garden I’ve made a number of alterations. The bathtub tie out points I’ve replaced with bungee cord. The door I’ve put a bungee on each flap, it helps getting it lower to the ground to stop wind, removes the often broken plastic rams horn clip and is easier to open and close at night. On the top loop on the peak I have run a line from there to the vent hoop and put a ring on the line, the ring then has a single line to the ground. It seems a bit stronger and helps keep the vent open. There’s also an additional line from the top loop that I can tie out to the rear in for the windy conditions just as you mentioned. For the both of these lines I carry the cyclone pegs, just for that added peace of mind.

I have the Lanshan 1 in bright yellow. Discrete wild camping is difficult! Only used a few times so far, but for a short, older woman with a dog, it’s a perfect weight and size for long distance walks. No issues with condensation to date, but I have been lucky with the weather. 🤗 Can’t wait us all to be released back into the wild! Keep the excellent reviews coming!

Great review. I have the two person, 4 season. Completely agree that a T-zip would be better and also a halfway sort of mesh on the inner. I bought the 1-Tigris version as well, which is 99% the same, just heavier and with a T-zip.

Thanks for the video, you've got another subscriber! I chose this over the pro version as it only weights 70g more and is so much more versatile. I've found the inner fits my Mountain Laurel Designs Trailstar and Cricket tarps and if I want to go ultralight I can use the outer on its own (450g). Loving the channel - keep those videos coming 👍

I'm happy to see you reviewing this tent. I bought the 2020 version and toured the alps with it last year. It is a magnificent tent that is very versatile and super light. You were right to suspect it of being drafty, though. However, drafts can be reduced to a minimum if you are willing to sacrifice 10cm of tent height. Adjusting the tent height using the trekking pole can also be used to create an impressive 20-25cm gap of the fly to the ground, to *increase* draftiness in hot weather (or when you desire a dry tent in the morning for quick and easy takedown). What I also like about it, is how adapable it is to difficult campgrounds. I've pitched this tent in very narrow spaces (dense grove of trees, boulderfields, etc) and because of its abundance of guyropes and attachmentpoints, it can be set up virtually anywhere. I'm sure you will have lots of fun with it!

I love the look of this tent. I do like the idea of half and half inner rather than all or nothing. I received the long twisting tent pegs and the supplier asked me why i wanted them as he had sold out within days. I sent him the link to your video. He replied "That explains it lol"

Nice one. Got the 2 man pro version. Pitched it next to a river in Dartmoor last year. At night I got sprayed with condensation from the sides. But a quick wipe down with a sponge does the trick. Or just don’t pitch next to a river of course. Nice tent. I can pitch it in under 2 minutes.

Thanks Ray, always an informative video, much appreciated 👍 As for the tent I don’t think 3f UL should call the reduced mesh inner a “4 season” inner as it gives the impression the tent is a 4 season tent, which it clearly isn’t. OK given the right conditions eg zephyr breeze, a bit of light drizzle then I’m sure you could get away with using it for a bit of Munro bagging in the summer and probably use it most of the year here in deepest Dorset, but a full on winter tent it ain’t 😂. But as you so rightly say, bang for buck this is a lot of tent for the money (just not 4 season, I would call it a 3 season + tent 😂😂) Once again many thanks for all your hard work. Regards from deepest Dorset 👍

I find in windy weather to simply peg the fly down using the loops directly connected to the fly so it's tight on the ground on the windward side, leaving the leeward side pegged at regular height for ventilation. Sometimes have to peg your inner in a bit, away from that side, to give more 'gust' room 😁

Just brought this tent myself, direct from 3F-UL Gear.. Ordered mine with the 4-season inner. Mine also came with the T-zip inner, much to my surprise as it was pictured with the J door.. I much prefer the T-zip as everyone says! 👍🏻 It would be a perfect shelter if it had a two-way zip on the fly! (Shame) I’ve only pitched mine in the garden upto now, I still need to seem seal my guy-out points though, as I got the hosepipe on them to test if they let water in or not, and they did do and was dripping through to the inside.. I’ve also done that mod you were talking about with the extra guy from the hanging loop on the top, it’s rock solid now, should handle 30-35mph winds a breeze! 😎

They sell a "4 season" version now with solid panels instead of the mesh. Pretty good option. Although prices are getting higher and higher as their brand grows. I got my Lanshan 2 Pro when it first came out for 115 euro. Now it's way past that, j including the 1p lashan. Although I'd argue the Lanshan 1 is the better buy of the two as it's absolutely bomb proof 1p tent. The Lanshan 2 really is not in the same league due to the massive flat panels which make it pretty flappy and not really storm worthy. I sold it for a 50% profit on tradera... (Swedish eBay)
@Shewie01

I think the Pro is the single skin version Ray, with a perimeter bug net and sewn in bathtub. I had one for a while but never tested it in anger, apparently the mesh 3F used doesn't allow fly condensation to drain so it gathered in the bathtub instead.

You're right about the hybrid mesh/solid inner. I find that all you need is enough solid fabric to keep the draught off your bag/quilt and off your head when you're lying down. The rest can be mesh, for better venting and views. But few makers do this.

I agree with most points, though much can be adjusted easily. As said, I adjust the height between 110 to 125 based on wind and weather, I rather see that as a good feature.. Also I have cut the front "looped" line in to 2 lines, 5 min job and you get flexible options with "doors" and an extra wind protection.. Spent a night in pouring rain last weekend, so it handles rain realy good as well, when seam sealed that is.. ;-)

A good review, clearly you know what works for you and that's reflected in the points you made. Totally agree about the double pull zippers on the flysheet and on the subject of inner tent doors I prefer a drop down door rather than a side opening door as you can open either end to access the porch but a T shaped zip is probably the best option as it keeps it off the ground, IIRC the Saunders Spacepacker I had briefly had a T zip. Talking about condensation, are you referring to condensation on the inside of the fly or inside the inner tent? personally I don't mind condensation on the inside of the fly (as long as the inner and fly can be stored separately) I'd prefer a fly close to the ground at the expense of increased fly condensation and I'm not a fan of mesh inners either, all things considered if the choice was full mesh or full solid I'd take full solid everytime, a half mesh panel on the door works for me, idelly with a solid covering panel. I've never used a tipi style of tent but have often considered them, I like something I can sit upright in rather than lying on my side trying to cook/attend to admin, I'm 5' 10" and can just about sit upright in a Laser Comp. Re the pegs, I never really worry about supplied pegs as I have my own set up that I trust but if the supplied ones are reasonably good it's bonus. Anyway, like I said, very good review and lots of valid points, very similar views to myself so I'd be pretty confidant in buying a tent that you liked, Cheers

Interesting review. I’ve had my eye in this particular tent fir sometime. I was hoping they would bring a dark green or even camo colour out, as well as the double zip you mentioned. Can’t wait to see your stove review. Was the import fee high from the USA? Cheers 🍻- Andy

Hi mate.. great vid. Do you think a 4 season lanshan 1 2021 will be too hot for summer?
@RS.Outdoors
@RS.Outdoors 2 года назад
Really depends where you are camping to be honest. For me in Scotland even in summer on the summits or some glens it can get chilly, but I mostly hate drafts blowing through the tent when it is all mesh. Some like a good breeze through the tent in summer as they sleep hot, others like me prefer to be toasty.

The apex triangle is also the same colour as the rest of the tent on the Pro. I had been interested in this one, but seeing the large air gap at bottom of the outer tent, and mesh extending down to near the ground level, not for me. A recipe for sand, dust, and grit getting all over you and your gear with desert camping, and for fine snow to blow right in through the mesh in winter. Should have solid fabric half way up that inner tent (or adjustable with zipper), if designed for winter use.

I have used this tent and it was leaking under medium heavy rain, and yes I have seam sealed the tents. It was raining under a couple of hours and it was like a very light shower inside the tent. We were actually a group that was camping and we used two lanshan 2 pro and one pro1 and all had the same issue, Every tent had water inside the tent in the morning. I would not rely on this tent for more challenging hikes. The construction is fine but I could never recommend to buy this tent. Very sad to say this, but you have to buy the real original stuff or maybe the old lanshan model. The old Lanshan have a rating on the outer fly of 5000mm waterproof index and the pro have 2000mm. Maybe the older model is more secure?

@RS.Outdoors
@RS.Outdoors 2 года назад
4-Season with T-Zip and not a J-Zip. There is next to no weight difference most of the time and the sold fabric helps to stop draughts in windy or cold weather. The T-Zip also makes for setting up your mat, bag and kit easier as well. Hate tents that are all mesh and only use tents with at least half sold fabric or all solid inner. Note that even camping in summer on the Scottish mountain tops can get cold and chilly with a breeze. Think they are bringing out a new tent I heard and will have T-Zips. Atb

I've had the robens starlight 2 for about five years now (switched to the lanshan 1 just last year). I absolutely love this tent. It is super rugged, keeps you really warm, and offers well enough space. I've never had a tent that was so easy to set up. 4 ground pegs, click in the supporting pole - done. With a bit of routine it can be set up in less than two minutes, which even makes pitching in heavy rain quite bearable. The only downside is its weight and packing size :/ that is the only reason i switched to the lanshan 1.

I like the Lan Shan range of tents. I think for the price and weight they are pretty good. And as for comparing them to garden furniture covers one has to ask why some manufacturers are now designing their tents with the same materials. I guess there are tents for all seasons just as there are tents for all sorts of people. Carry on camping....
