Really? I hated Brick House for some reason and I was a toking rock chik/funkadelica back then. The days when you could be both. Wild Cherry for sure got us up and AWB Pick up the pieces; more blue eyed soul from Scotland should you care to look them up. They were huge at one time. (70s). You could dance to anything you wanted to; Friday go clubbing; Saturday: go see a cool rock band in London. Simples.

when I was in high school, in the late 70s I moved from a two horse farming town to another state in into a big city. where I met people not my color, and became best friends with Pookie. Pookie took my a concert. My first funk concert. Wild Cherry. The Ohio Players. and Earth Wind and Fire. that night Changed my life forever, the next day I bought a bass and Bootsy Collins found a new fan. This music open my eyes and new doors to world of wonderful people I would have never had the opportunity to meet otherwise. Also led me to the land of jazz and then later hip hop. Thank you Pookie! Oh how wonderful seeing these bands in the 70s was. Thank you for the reminders of how priveledged we were to see these artists.

You should have watched the "live" performance from the Midnight Special, and the two black fellas are off to the left with their brass pointing at the white singer when they say play that funky music white boy, it's hysterical! One of the guys twirls his brass so fast you are sure it's going to go flying but it never does, please check it out!

This band is from a few towns over from me, Steubenville Ohio, about 20 minutes from Pittsburgh, these guys were a fantastic blues rock band that played locally in the 70s the story goes that rock in the clubs started to die off because of the Disco craze that was building and at the club gigs almost every weekend a brother would ask "Hey do you white boys know any funk" so eventually the singer decided if they didn't adapt to the changing music scene the band would die so they wrote this song and ended up scoring one of the biggest hits of the 70s

If I remember right I saw a interview with one of the original members of Wild Cherry several years ago. He said the inspiration for this song came from when the band was on tour and their agent booked them down south at a blues bar. The band did not know what to do as they were trying to decide what to play someone in the audience yelled come on play that funky music white boy. So they just threw it together and the people loved it and the rest is history as they say.

Yep, and the chorus of "play that funky music, white boy" was sung in a higher key than in the usual version so there's most def something wonky with the vocal track, it sounds like a hybrid i.e. edited together from two different sources because the lead singer's vocal is identical to the more common version of this song.

Yes, this was a video of them playing live, but over the recorded version. Back in the mid 90's went to see a local band one night, 1st time seeing them. They started playing a song with a funky groove, and I knew it sounded familiar, but couldn't place it. I had all but forgotten about this song until they went into the chorus, and it all came flooding back.

Wild Cherry was up for Best New Artist and lost to that one hit wonder, Starland Vocal Band. They also lost Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus to Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr. (formerly with The Fifth Dimension). Anyhow, they performed this at the Grammys and brought the house down. Great memory.
