This video is a quick review of the Wild Country - Zephyros 1 Lite which is made by Terra Nova in the UK. I compare it with my trusty standard Zephyros and highlight some of the changes that have been made to make the Lite Lighter :-) My friend Ray and I wild camped up at Grindslow Knoll on Kinder Scout and enjoyed a great evening.
If you would like to find out more about either of these tents you can head over to www.Terra-Nova....

These seem like great little tents, makes me wonder why anyone bothers with the more expensive TN ones over a few less grams?
@DeanRead

Robert Mepham I'm just a regular guy with a regular job so had to go for the cheaper option :-) luckily the Zephyros is a very good option indeed

I had the TN laser which I got for £220 in a sale but that was before the zephyros existed or I would have bought that. I have now sold the TN and reverted back to my amazing little tiger paws tent! Heavier but its a great little shelter and it always makes me smile knowing it cost me 30 quid.

Great review Dean. I'm in the market now for a new tent and these reviews on RU-vid are so great. Thank you for putting this up.

No problem, thanks for watching. I'd highly recommend the Luxe HexPeak v4a which I currently use. You can see it in my latest Lake District video.

Cheers Ant. The Zephros really is a great tent, I'm glad I bought it. Thanks for subbing. Really enjoy your videos too, keep them coming

I really like that the fly extends well past the tent on all sides. Most I've had or have seen the fly dumps the water right at the edge of the tent.

Looks like a pretty sweet tent. I've been liking my Robens Voyager 2 for the last few years, but the idea of something at half the weight is definitely pretty appealing. Not a bad price either.

I can't fault my zephyros, it's a great tent for a great price. I was a little bit heavy handed with it and broke the zip so it's currently in need of repair :-) thanks for watching

I bought the zephyros 1 a couple of years ago to go wild camping. Not used it yet, as I had a Robens double dreamer, but it was a bit heavy for lugging into the wild. Planning a trip to the Carneds in late Jan, weather permitting to try out the zephyros

Thanks for watching Malcolm. Hope you have a great trip to the Carneds, that’s a place a need to return to as it’s been about 5 years since I last went. All the best. Dean

Thank you for the comparison, I'm thinking of getting a lite to replace an old Argos backpacker tent so it was interesting to see them side by side.

Well Wild Country are selling off "Used - B" Lites at the moment for £95. They describe that category as having seen some outdoor use, but not for more than a few nights, and no repairs needed/done. I decided to fork out the cash since that was not much more than the standard goes for these days. I already have a WC Aspect 2 for trips where I'm in one spot for a few days, so a Lite will do great for trips where I'm moving on each night. Now I can't wait for it to arrive!

Well presented, but I am curious why so many people ‘review’ equipment that they haven’t really viewed before. If it’s out of the box new, how can you do anything more than review as you go?

Thanks Mark, the Zephyros range is amazing for the price. When compared to other tents of similar weight / spec they are an absolute steal :-)

Hi Dean. Great videos! Does the Lite have a 2-way zip as I'm concerned about condensation? Many thanks

Hi Ben, thanks for watching. I think it does but sadly I can't remember 100% as I don't have either tent any more.

@@DeanRead Thanks for your reply Dean. I was thinking of buying the Compact model. It's 1.57kg. Ive got loads of tents but been using an Alpkit Soloist but I'd like a vestibule I can cook in and tiny pack size. The Compact in only 30cm packed has vents at each end and good to know if the zip is 2-way. It's for bikepacking so I don't think the weight is much of an issue.

I can confirm that the end poles are the same size. I also found out that the end poles are interchangeable and they are same size as the Terra Nova Laser Competition. let me know if you manage to get spares
@TheRocktalk
@TheRocktalk 10 лет назад
The end poles of the zeph lite are aluminium and collapsible into two sections. The main pole is a slightly higher spec too. The flysheet fabric is rip stop nylon, about 20 denier I reckon, as opposed to the polyester of the original zeph.

Hi there, I'm not 100% certain about the difference between elasticity of the fabrics so wouldn't like to guess :-). I wonder weather part of It may be because I managed to pitch the Lite tighter.

@DeanRead
@DeanRead 10 лет назад
Hi Rupert, the last time I took my Zephyros out I did get some condensation but nothing major, it had been raining hard all night. Before that trip I hadn't noticed any problems if I'm honest.

Hi Dean great video as always, one question how does it handle condensation are there any real issues ? Lastly I looked at the normal Zephyros a couple of months back and I put off buying one due to a saggy inner.Kind Regards Kev.

Dean, great videos on your channel on Zephyros and places to camp. I'm looking to get into a bit of wild camping, and torn between Zephyros and Banshee - going for 2 person model as i'm a big guy and need a bit more room. Just wondering, how do you find the zephyros in wind? I've seen a few comments on it though not much in the way of testing? Being in Scotland, i'm going to encounter some gales up on the hills so need it to stand up to moderate winds. I saw the same wind comments though on the Wild Country Etesian 4 I have though, and seemed okay so far.......... Zephyros 2 is coming in at £100 locally which seems a decent price Cheers
@DeanRead
@DeanRead 8 лет назад
+Graeme Brown hi Graeme, the Zephyros has been a really good tent. I honestly can't fault it, I have broken the zip pull on mine recently which was totally my fault but other than that it's like new. It stands up to wind really well providing you pitch side on in to the wind. I'm average build and around 6ft and the Zephyros 1 is just about right for me, I'd definitely recommend the 2 if you wanted something a little more spacious and £100 is a great price. Let me know if I can help with more questions etc. ATB Dean

Thanks Dean, picked up the 2 2016 for £100 so hopefully get out in it on next couple of days. Quick Question - do you have the end pole bottoms sloping in or out? Seems to be a lot of chat on this from my research. ATB Graeme
@DeanRead
@DeanRead 8 лет назад
+Graeme Brown hi Graeme, I think they slope outwards from memory. The pitching of the end points is a fine art :-)

+Dean Read thanks Dean arrived yesterday and set up on Glasgow Green this morning. Took me about ten minutes though tight pitch first time! Definitely not a two man tent though ideal room for me and bag. Would post a photo of my proud effort though RU-vid won't allow. Atb Graeme

Great vid was so tempted by the original zephyros 1 when looking for a one man tent but in the end went for a bit more space with the banshee 200. keep up the good work and great vids.

@LDAON 10 лет назад
Hey dean thanks for amazing vid You go into detail with both I'm a owner of the zephyros 1 but have a couple of questions when I peg it out the outer seems to be high and not touching the ground ? Is this just the way I've set it up? Also is the inner and outer joined together when pegged as the inner seems tighter than the out if this makes sense? Kind regards Lee keep up the good work dude
@DeanRead
@DeanRead 10 лет назад
Lee Dalton Hi Lee, I think that might just be the way the are designed. I always get a little bit of space at both ends between the ground and the outer. I sometimes grab the end inner point and the put the outer point through it before pegging it down. I found that if you want a really tight pitch that was a good way of getting one and not making the inner real really tight, you aren't really pegging the inner down with my method but I found it works ok... hope that all makes sense :-)

Hi Dean great vid love the Lite, although I have the standard Zephyros 2 being 6' 3" nice to have the extra room. I have changed all guys to dynema from terra nova and removed end poles and store with main pole on the side of my rucksack, changed pegs to a mixture of ti y beams and ti pins, stuff the tent into small exped dry bay all works a treat. But I was wondering if the Lite end poles will fit in my Zephyros? cheers Pads

Hi Kevin, thanks for commenting. I've never had any problem with the inner saging. The key is to pull the end guy lines as tight as possible to get a taught outer pitch. The inner is adjustable to prevent saging, It can be adjusted at each end inside to keep it tight. Hope that helps :-)
@CragScrambler
@CragScrambler 10 лет назад
Oh man those zephyros pegs, first time I pitched was near ironcrag and 4 of the pegs bent like that one you showed as I pushed them in with my boot, they are great little tents but jeez those pegs, I must have spent 10 mins "unbending" them so I could free them from the guylines haha, I bought Alpkit candy canes as they are similar to the Terra Nova voyager pegs which are bulletproof and about the same weight.
@DeanRead
@DeanRead 10 лет назад
Yeah the standard pegs aren't the best :-) I used my foot to push one down once and then subsequently spent ages trying to get the guy line off when packing away. I still haven't upgraded mine yet, might check out the alpkit ones.

Hi, Would I be correct in observing the lite to flap around less, possibly because a higher elasticity of the fly fabric?
@nemome5837
@nemome5837 4 года назад
Poles are to be assembled carefully and zips are to be pulled from the puller rather than just pulling the door down. Read the instructions before you get yourself into trouble with a broken pole or ruined zip.
@TungstenKid

What's the height of the inner? I'm 5ft 8" and need at least 80cm to sit up. Inner height is the first thing I look at when buying tents, I gotta be able to sit up..:)
@DeanRead
@DeanRead 10 лет назад
I'm not sure exactly how tall it is but I am a similar height to you and I can sit up inside. If I want to sit in the doorway I sometimes un hook one clip attaching the inner to the outer as it drops down where the door is. That is enough to get it out of the way of my head.. Hopefully that made sense... In brief, it is tall enough for me :-)
@TungstenKid
@TungstenKid 10 лет назад
Dean Read Thanks mate, yeah i googled around for the specs and see the Zephyros outer is 92cm high, so I should imagine the inner will be at least the 80cm I need to sit up..:) Incidentally do you know of any tent company that could make me a tent to my own simple design?

...Great tents guys i use an similiar design the Vango 200 Banshee however as with all single or double hoop designs an word of caution to novices/begginers particulary as you guys pitched atop an brow with an up-draught of wind noticebly evident...When taking down the tent in wind or bluster unless you want an parachute on your hands never remove all the pegs with the hoop poles still in place..Simply slacken by removing the pegs from the ground at the sides of the tent and with the hoops in place also the fore and aft pegs slack but still firmly in...Grouind the tent and then remove the hoops with your body weight on the flysheet to hold it down but remember still have some pegs in place to anchor that flysheet on the ground..If you dont you could say goodbye to your important shelter now an parachute to find yourself with the potential of exposure to the elements..I know from experience to ground that flysheet guys if the hoop are in place...If not its up-up and away...!!

I've seen some people peg from end to end first and also from centre outwards. does this really make any difference to the end tension?>
@DeanRead
@DeanRead 9 лет назад
I don't think it really matters which you peg out first as long as the end to end bit is adjusted to be as tight as possible. I found that this is the best way to get it as tight looking as possible. Thanks for watching
