In this video I want to introduce you to wild garlic aka ramson or allium ursinum: This plant is part of the family of onions (alliaceae) and can be used as a medicine as well as a wild edible - make sure to check out this identification video to learn how to identify, harvest and use this wonderful plant.
I hope you will learn a thing or two - let me know if you used this plant to cook some spinach, to spice up some food, or for other medicinal purposes. :-)
As usual, please also make sure to not forage for plants you cannot identify at 100% certainty - do not take chances and consult an expert if needed.

Watched a ton of identification videos on garlic and yours is by far the best, thank you so much! I have wild garlic growing in my garden so I will put these points to the test!

Hey there :) First of all thanks for your comment, glad to hear that the short video is of use. :) I envy your garden with the allium, we got ours facing south with barely any shadow so the last two years all attempts to cultivate wild garlic in ours failed. Luckily the next foraging spot is just about a kilometer away. ATB Ralf

i just want to say how impressive your identification videos are. i’ve seen most of the youtube vids on the subject and nobody ever warns that the whole “if it smells like garlic or onion, it is. if it doesn’t, it’s not” rule is not a safe method on its own.

Hey Chuck, sorry I missed this comment. First of all thanks for the kind words. :) Glad it resonates, I find it important to be thorough when it comes to foraging.

I was really worried about trying to forage during my hikes because of the risk of poisoning myself and my partner. However, on the strength of this video, im going to go for a hike right now and try and find a bit of wild garlic to bring home (and ofc I will sub!). I also found some in my garden. Cheers!

Hi Arran, thanks for your comment first of all. I am really glad if the video is of help and that it takes some of your worries away. To keep it simple: Just go for the pop-test showed in the video, this method (in combination with all other points made) is basically fool-proof. On a side note: Both the meadow saffron and lilly of the valley would tantalise your gums if eaten - our bodies are very well capable of ringing the alarm so to speak. In the end, it always boils down to mindfulness. Enjoy foraging!

Thank you very much for an excellent video. We have the autumn flowering crocus in our garden and wild garlic in the wood nearby, so I was able to show my wife how to distinguish between them using the various tests you recommended. She was very impressed, in particular when I demonstrated the little 'snapping' sound produced by folding the wild garlic leaf stem, and also when I pointed out the almost semi-circular cross-section of the main stem of the wild garlic.

Thanks for this video. Has answered a lot of the questions I had. Have seen a patch of wild garlic near me and am thinking of harvesting some. Do people just eat the leaves or the bulbs as well?
@RathwulvenBushcraft
@RathwulvenBushcraft 2 года назад
Hi there, thanks for the comment. You can eat the bulbs, just check out this video series here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NlS-yYcQDVQ.html&ab_channel=RathwulvenBushcraft We do forage some and process them into a dish. It is important to check your state laws though, cause over here wild garlic was protected up until a couple of years ago due to people overforaging the populations. Always got to respect the law!

I believe that is the same plant that is called "Ramps" (nearly always plural) in the mountains of eastern USA. This is a highly celebrated plant in that region.

Hi wouldn’t it be easier to just smell them garlic smell is pretty strong thanks for the interesting video cheers
@RathwulvenBushcraft
@RathwulvenBushcraft 4 года назад
Hey Philip - I am not sure if I did mention it in the video, but smelling the plant is an absolutely unreliable test. Toxic lookalikes grow in the same location and once the smell sticks to your fingers, your hands will smell like allium - regardless of what plant you are holding.

@RathwulvenBushcraft
@RathwulvenBushcraft Год назад
Hi there - I think you might be referring to meadow garlic then (aka Canadian wild garlic or allium canadense). Different plant but still good to know. I don't think we got that one over here in Europe. :)
@sharonroyle2077
@sharonroyle2077 6 месяцев назад
Those plants you are calling "wild garlic" are actually wild leeks! Otherwise known as "ramps"!
