Nobody from this Khmu family has ever attended school.. They are just too poor.
Wild Laos - Khmu Too Poor for School.. Never Been!
Our day starts in the high mountain village of Phou Khoun Laos helping some very poor people the Nai Ban (Village Chief) has guided us too. Only to find the poorest of the poor.. a 14 year old, her mother and grandmother all of which have never been educated. All having to work from a very young age to feed themselves. We also stop at the local village markets before hitting the road to make our way to Luang Prabang.
Everyday life in Laos, we live in Vientiane, Now in Lao with Lao wife, Neenee Lao life living in Laos capturing the Lao lifestyle, daily life in Lao, where to go in Laos, travel destinations, Laos tourism, customs, Lao development and how people live in Laos in their travel Laos videos and travel vlogs. Thank you for all the support guys, we both really do appreciate it. I would just like to thank those who were touched by some of the people in this video and who are wondering how they can do more. Some viewers wanting to send us money so we can help her directly, some wanting to send her to school, others wanting to sponsor her.. It is a really sticky situation, and as I have stated before in a previous video with the little girl Mina ( the girl the grandmother wanted us to raise), it's not a situation we are able to put ourselves into. We can not accept the responsibility of where you want your money to go. That's not what we do. We are not a registered charity. This is why Neenee and myself do these trips.. to make sure the money we are spending goes to who needs it most. And before some of you say "but we trust you".. thank you, but what about the next village we pass through, and the next? We just don't have the time to help like that.. Phou Khoun was the first and closet stop on this trip to where we live and it is 5+ hours of mountainous road from us. Some of you may think it callous, but we don't have the time be travelling all over Laos every time we meet somebody in need of help. This is Laos.. There are many people like this in EVERY village and our videos are highlighting this.. I wish we never had to work so we could just travel the country helping people, but what some are asking takes a lot of time and effort that we just don't have. All I can suggest if you really do want to help a particular person/family/village is to go through the right avenues and get in touch with the Nai Ban (Village Chief). The only contact we have for the Nai Ban is through another family member and we can't be giving that out. Our way of helping may not be much, but that is how we are able to help. Us highlighting those in need will hopefully drive more resources in their direction. I hope you understand, thank you.

Even if most of your viewers trust you, this is the internet. If you accept money and help people, there will always be some wanker who'll think you might be skimming some off and start demanding proof, as I saw happen to another RU-vidr recently. So that path can lead to tons of extra hassle beyond what you've listed, even though it shouldn't.

i live here in Laos and have stayed here for a total of 10 years altogether. i agree with you. it is impossible to do all of that and to help these people with everything we think they should have. most families out in rural areas let only their younger children go to school because they need help to feed themselves through farming. that's if they have many kids. another reason they might want their kids to go to school is to be able to find work in the city in the future. however, if they are use to this lifestyle, there might not be any incentive to go to school at all, in their eyes. the government and non-government organizations even have programs that give out rice to the children when they show up to school as incentive to actually go to school. sometimes parents don't have help during the rice planting/harvesting season and need to take their kids out so they can grow enough to last the whole year. many times, children get frustrated with falling behind when they get pulled out of school, so they stop going. another issue is some schools are far from many childen's homes. if they walk, they would have to start really early or pay for transportation. some sleep at the school and go home on weekends by catching rides with friends. it's not to say that these people aren't smart though. they many not know how to read and not know much about city life, but they are good at surviving in the wilderness and farming. they know what trees and plants are useful to them. they are very resourceful. with these thoughts, i would think it's not really a viable option to send money to older children for school because they would have to begin with little children and unless they really, truly want the education, they most likely won't go. but i would maybe encourage those who want to help to actually visit and just help in the areas they are willing to go to and give them clothing for winter and get to know them. find out: how do they feed themselves? how do they find money? what do they enjoy doing? do they have a phone? do they have social media? you'd be surprised at what they have and don't have. things we see as basic, like toilets and running water, they don't have. things we see as privelages, like a smart phone and internet, they do have. it's good to see you getting to know the people and doing good. cheers!

Hi Todd, when General Vang Pao's army retreated to this area, the fighting was pretty done. It was after 1974's agreement between Prime Minister Souvana Phouma and his red brother Chao Supha Nouvong. There were some minor fights took place here but it was due to the communist forces intentionally instigated the fights. General Vang Pao ordered his T-28 bombing to strike a few communist targets in the area, but he was called to Vientiane and was told by Prime Minister Souvana Phouma to stop fighting as he was violating the agreement. It was at this time that General Vang Pao resigned his generalship and left Laos on May 15, 1975, effectively ending the fighting in Laos.

Despite the small silliness that you two engage in, here & there, just to bring some brief smiles to the faces of those people --- people I'd comfortably call "my people," too, since I was born not too far from them, even if I was born to another ethnic group, the Hmong (still incredibly impoverished, too) ---- what you & Neenee do, on most of your trips into the heart of Laos countryside, have brought quite a bit of tears to my eyes ... seeing so many people still so impoverished in the land, in the local region, of my birth & of my childhood... Anyway, it's good to see & to hear that not all White people who do a few good things for the less fortunate of the world do it for the most selfish reason of trying to convert them into Christianity... They just do it because they could, as one human for another...

Great plan to possibly get her to the restaurant ,and get her working/earning and interacting with the outside world, I hope it happens ,🙏 Interesting little snippet about Neenee's father and the bodyguard relevance. Thanks Damo.. Have your own vehicle(or hire) to travel in and get away from the main tourist destinations. Also, having somebody who speaks the language is a real necessity, I don't know how I'd do it without Neenee. Other than that, it's best to give things people need money to buy. That's why you don't see us giving rice very often. Just about everybody grows some type of food, but they are very cash poor. Things like clothes/blankets and care packages made up of sanitary items, soap, clothes washing powder, cooking oil, salt, seasonings, fish sauce, tinned fish, packets noodles etc. Just a few things to make their already meagre meals a little tastier. You'll find just about everybody who is struggling needs these types of items. If we can we like to buy these things at the markets while we're travelling, that way you're injecting cash into the local economy also. Even if you can't help like we do, just by stopping more often than you would and buying a water or a meal, some cookies for the children.. it's all help. You just being there helps! Cheers mate, any other questions.. hit me!😉

@@NowinLao Thanks for replying Todd. We are doing a motorcycle tour on late October with Great Escape Tours out of Vientiane to the North and we will have a local with us so I think I will let the tour company know our plan so they can help us do it properly. The 6 of us are all part of a Melbourne motorbike club called Madcat and we have many members who will not be with us on the tour but will want to contribute. Anyway thanks again so much for the advice. Maybe we'll come and have dinner at your restaurant the night before we leave. Cheers mate. Damo.

This and other stories just hurts my heart. I did help out some children in INDIA with no parents, via a RU-vid channel, in which the influencer used provided funds for clothing and food. I took a chance and had some success. But , it was such a drop in the bucket. If only I could do more. I honor your dedication, helping where you can. 👍👍🙏🙏 I must CONDEMN GOGGLE, taking 30% of donated funds. Stealing food form children in need. Shameful, damn shameful.

Absolutely Kenneth, they're already taking a big amount of the revenue from the ads they put on our videos then take 30% of YOUR money for which they have done nothing for! Please don't get me started on this lol This is why when people wish to help out on these type of trips I recommend Paypal. Even Patreon takes less than YT does. Anyway, thanks for your input mate. All the best 🙏

Sabaidi, 我来自China, 众所周知的原因来到Lao; (Leave China for well-known reasons)。捐赠是不够的, 最好的方案是类似Uniqlo的企业能够落地(The best solution is like Uniqlo's Nike's garment factory in Vietnam)

Hi Todd,,I'd love to hear the rest of the story about Neenee's family,,her Dad. I didn't realize he was a Pathet Lao General. I wonder if he helped to plan some of those attacks against the government troops on that ridge. Very interesting. What a nice man the ex bodyguard was,,all those people were as sweet as most Lao people. Those young woman,,girls,,some of them were gorgeous! Too bad the surface beauty gets worked off so quickly. The grandaughter,,if a modeling agency found her,,she'd become rich. But that business is full of molestation and manipulation,,not a very nice business at all,,but that girl had a special beauty to her,,especially when she smiled. She lit up. To see them able to be happy in their situation,,makes me feel ashamed that I bitch and groan about shit that doesn't matter. Wish like always,,I could have been on this trip. I'm proud of you ,brother,,and of Neenee. You guys ,,even if it doesn't seem like much,,you're touching lives,, those kids will remember you guys until the day they die. Much appreciated video,,the historical aspect and the humanitarian aspect,,and of course,,the market. Still not knowingly eating rat,,although those rats are probably vegetarians lol,,Ttyl,,,Marlon

Besides phones being very cheap here, they are more likely 'hand me down' phones from other locals who can upgrade. The phone that young girl had would be her most valuable possession and somebody may have given it to her for educational purposes. Phones are a necessity today, not a luxury.

@Marion Delgato excellent input. I sometimes forget how strange things were to me here at first also. Many things I still don't understand, but it works for them. Thank you Marion

@@NowinLao This question could solve the other issue of how people can help them from afar. Anyone with a mobile phone can access a bank account, PayPal, LinePay, UnionPay etc. I guess some of the poorest people wouldn't even have a bank account, but the Nai Ban should.

14:35 Instead of Khao Ngua (bullhorn) how came that Neenee said Ham Ngua in the first place? Ham Ngua means bull's testicle. 🥹
