👉 If you want to learn how and when to find American Lotus (Nelumo lutea) and dozens of other wild foods, check out my Interactive Forager’s Calendar! 📅 (Link in my bio) I have been working on this video for about three months now. I have to say, processing lotus produces some pretty incredible audio! Let me know if you’d like to see a long version of this video. I had to condense a lot of the process to fit it into a short. I’ll also be sharing some videos of recipes you can make with lotus nuts (there are dozens). My wife has come up with some really incredible preparations that we cannot wait to share with you! Let me know if you like this wild food processing asmr style. It’s a new experiment for me. If you do, what wild food would you like to see next?
Is there a way we could find Lotus nuts to grow for ourselves? I've been trying to find the American Lotus seeds, but I have no luck. Would you be willing to sell some?
@@Pawpawtrees Certain native plant sellers online sell them. Prairie Moon Nursery sells American lotus seeds. You can grow them on your patio in a small pond, or in a livestock water tank / stock tank.
@@Pawpawtrees Also, if you Google Nelumbo lutea seeds, you should be able to find the edible American lotus seeds pretty easily. Everwilde Farms carries them, Trade Winds Fruit does, Strictly Medicinal Seeds has them.
I would like a longer version of this video! Also, how do you use the seeds once you've processed them? Do you use them as you would any other edible seed?
The Indian process of popping them is super dope. What you prepared would be great I don’t know why I think of a banana split topping. I’ll leave a link to the process I found for popping them in one piece. It looks very satisfying. It’s like making popcorn but you need to bang the seed with a mallet while it’s crackling hot to get it to work. That sounds like popping bubble wrap but like way more fun and you magically end up with these like naturally extruded-like puffs. Super awesome natural science behind it probably.
Bro u r talking about different seeds which pops ..it's called makhana in local language and theyare seeds of prickly water Lily...this video is about giant water Lily seeds ..they are known as Kamal gatta in India .and used in warship as well as eating
Man this guy is impressive with what he does. Having said that he'd be one of the ones that if he went on pure zero carb keto or carnivore he would have oxalate dumping like crazy
Read the pinned comment at the beginning of the comments. In it he provides information on a link to his foraging calendar. Locale may be included but I haven't looked at it.
My gram used to give me one of these and I bit right into it, damn it was crazy hard, it broke one of my big back tooth and I had to get the dentist removed the broken tooth along with its root for me. I can still remember the pain and the trauma that one single nut caused me
@@benstewart7079yeah. On his website he recently posted an article about making bread with lotus. Apparently it makes a good enough flour that you don't have to split it with normal wheat flour like a lot of other wild foods.
@@benstewart7079 yes, Chinese make a sweet paste for filling pastries. For butter consistency, stop cooking when at desired consistency. Chinese style and method is quite thick most sliceable, well at least for mooncakes. Essentially, boil until soft. Avoid using too much water. Puree until smooth. Sweeten and cook further in a fry pan using low heat to boil off excess moisture until desired consistency. ENJOY!!
@@Zahri8Alangthat’s what people are eating 99% of the time- its one of the most popular foods in china, and while it honestly reminds me unsalted potato or plain rice the texture is still amaaazing
