Henry Red Allen is probably in my top 3 favorite trumpet players of all time. This is clip is an example of his greatness. Accompanying him is his all star band: Coleman Hawkins on saxophone, Rex Stewart of cornet, Jo Jones on drums, Milt Hinton on bass, Pee Wee Russell on clarinet, Danny Barkerand on banjo, Vic Dickenson on trombone. This is taken from the Sound of Jazz, a CBS special which appeared in the 50s.

Henry Red Allen is probably one of the most underated greats. I saw him many times at the Metropole in New York. He was great. This mainstream music, is the mainstream of what came latter.

Yes ... Pee Wee, and Red, at their best of their later days. They, both died in the late 1960s, but their contributions to jazz ... incl. their LATER days ... are captured on film, and on recordings.

It's a miracle it was made and we still have it to enjoy. I would get to the T V in the late 1950's for the Robert Herridge theatre and any related programs and this was so intense, moving, I had to take it up. Nothing is more spirited and genuine than this gang of stars.

Thanks so you much for posting The Greats. It reminds me of the time when I met Jo Jones and we sat at the table together with another friend at the Jazz Work Shop in Boston,Ma. We were checking out Rahsaan Roland Kirk another Great and that night Rahsaan introduce Mr Jo Jones as one of the GREAT! Jazz drummers and ask him to sit in which he did. That was a night I will never forget. Thanks again, NK

I bought a 16mm print of the show -probably illegally - in 1979 and showed it to everyone I knew for years. The program dates from a Sunday afternoon in 1957. Lester Young appeared in the Billie Holiday segment, so ill he could barely stand for his solo. It's a magnificent musical treasure available on DVD.

The same group does "Rosetta" next, the best version I've ever heard, with Red telling the group, "Don't drag the tempo this time", as they had with "Wild Man Blues" (notice Vic Dickensen's intro to his solo and Jo Jones impatience with the tempo).
