Wild Orangutan Heals Himself with Medicinal Plant in World First | Vantage with Palki Sharma
An orangutan in Indonesia has healed his own wound. The wild orangutan is named Rakus. He self-medicated using a medicinal plant. This is the first time a wild animal recorded treating an injury with a medicinal plant. Rakus used leaves of yellow root plants, which possess anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Rakus created paste of leaves and applied it to wound repeatedly. Within five days, the orangutan's wound had closed. Within a month, the orangutan's wound healed without any signs of infection. Animals often self-medicate to treat ailments. How do they acquire the skills? How did the orangutan learn how to use leaves to heal his injury? Palki Sharma tells you.

Even stray dogs have been observed by ppl of olden times to heal itself of stomach problems by eating a combination of specific plant leaves, which is not part of it's usual diet. Whether it is DNA hardwired behavior or just learned behavior which can be useful for future reference, we cannot deny that animals know more than we think they do.

I'm extremely shocked that this is strange to some people. Adaptability is one thing every creature associates with. Each specie must have faced pandemics at some point in their timeline. If we still have all these species around it'll be stupid to think they never face sever biological and health challenges. I grew up seeing animals self medicate. From fowls to mammals. Seeing wounded reptiles immersing themselves into water for extended periods, seeing dogs eating special herbs, herbivores eating specific leaves and adjusting their activity patterns. Most people really don't know animals are hundreds of times more sophisticated than we can ever understand. Anything that survives in the wild has an all round capability against any problems they can encounter. It's nature.

I think scientists are stupid to just follow the same old thinking. Naturally when you eat plants or vegetables you can understand the taste properties of the plant and if you're a animal you can just eat all day all kinds of plants you see and observe little by little how they're behaving, are they making you feel weird strong or dizzy or dangerous or basically you can feel and I think that's how these animals know what to do what not to do or atleast they try and see......just saying that they're learning from their members is a stupid answer cause who taught the first monkey that? I also heard a friend saying " in ancient times when a family member gets sick cows go to forest graze diff plants and leaves and gives milk the next day which helps with recovery " don't know how much of it is true but was fascinating.
