Wild pigeons do not give an owl hoot, Part 2: Revenge of the owl nestlings.

Charter Group Birdcams ציפורים אונליין קבוצת צ'רטר

All the birds in this video are WILD and can enter and leave as they please. This video is meant to document the lives of wild barn owl and pigeons in order that we can learn more for both educational & research purposes and serve as an aid for the species conservation effort. We do not set up/ stage or intervene. All the videos are documenting wild animals.
On June 29, 2021 a pigeon entered a barn owl nest box that had 4 nestling that is streamed live in our RU-vid channel (Charter Group Birdcams ציפורים אונליין קבוצת צ'רטר). A this time the barn owl parents roost outside the nest box during the day and returned only at night to feed the young. Here the barn owl parents left their nestlings a lone to defend themselves from the pigeon pair that wanted the nest for themselves. This is second time we documented a pigeon laying eggs inside an active barn owl nest boxes with barn owls nestlings.
All the birds in this video are WILD and chose to enter and could leave as they please.
We set security cameras in bird nests that we stream live in our RU-vid channel “Charter Group Birdcams” in order to observe the birds in nature but not to interfere or intervene.

@alexadamson9959
@alexadamson9959 2 года назад
Most likely. Some animals are known to be vindictive and do things out of spite. Owls actually kill crows on sight because crows attack their nests. This isn’t something that was biologically programmed into the birds, but something that they learned down the generations. It could very easily become the same with pigeons with these owls.

I think the Owls just couldn't fight in that nestbox without endangering the children. Owls are stealth/flyby predators. They are not build for robustness or nestbox wrestling. If the parent got injured, it might not have been able to provide food. And there was a high chance of the owl chicks being injured from trying to fight there. The priority was feeding the chicks and hope they are able to drive the Pigeon out.

Also, it's kind of cute how the parent owls legit don't seem to mind the pigeons nesting next to them. Like, the babies may think the pigeon is a threat (and admittedly, it's acting like a dick to them to keep them away), but the adults are just like "eh, there's space in here and you don't eat meat, you can stay". In fact this concept benefits to both species, because the owl will protect the nest at night, while pigeon will do it during the day. Also we must take into consideration the weight of a pigeon, these owls evolved to kill small creatures about 10g weight like a mouse, while a pigeons is about 350-400g. Also pigeons use to fight with their wings, the external feather is stronger than the other, it's made to strike hard and their muscles in the wings are very strong, that's why their have a rounded body, while the owls have soft feathers to remains silent at flight, they probably have the weakest wings of all birds (compared to their size), also owls can't flight during rain while pigeons can, they are still good predators but all their strategy are based on camouflage. So the owls can only strike with their paws or beak, which isn't enough to scare a pigeon. You can find videos with pigeons repelling roosters from their nest, once again the roosters fight with their paws but don't know how to fight a wing, at some point the rooster will just fall of the nest and give up, so an owl isn't a problem. The weight of the owl is also very small for their size, at best 800g. But the pigeon is still too weak to kill an owl... so they are forced to share the nest. The fact is a tiny owl never attack a pigeon, they don't even know how to do that, while pigeons use to fight everything with poor result, of course some larger owl could catch a pigeon at night, but it'll only works if the owl can grab it perfectly with tons of speed, here this is impossible. Pigeons have more agility to protect the nest, they can just push back the owl forever. The last fact is the owls leave the nest at the same time to get food while pigeons relay eachother, they have a different source of food and process that benefits to the owl. The pigeon will still be the first target of any intruder, so it's good to protect the younglings. This case is interesting because if both species collaborate they could get stronger (like any animals if you think about it), some spiders learnt to protect some frogs from birds while the frog protect the spider from wasp, so maybe in the future we will see something like that with pigeons and owl.

Wow wonderful analysis, everyone here is just making fun of the pigeon but you explained why the pigeon is the true badass over here
@FoXMaSteR001
@FoXMaSteR001 2 года назад
@@JoeArruffo Pigeons know how to defend a nest because they use over 50% of their life doing it Their bad reputation comes from the fact they are sometimes overconfident, in french "acting like a pigeon" means "being naive". But this is how they evolved, they live in group so when a pigeon dies the others can learn from it, while an owl's death won't increase the skills of other owls. That's why wolves and lions are so strong, they are group predators. So these pigeons probably understood that this place is the safer place at night, which is actually true, are they dumb lucky or genius, we can't really know, but a least they tried, which is awesome because when we think about it humans evolved like that, some people really tried poisonous plants to know it was poison, and the group learnt it was poison.
