Though wild roses may not be as large and extravagant as the cultivated varieties we know and love today, there is something so enchanting about seeing a wild rose growing. Wild roses have been utilized by humans for food and medicine for thousands of years, and have been seen as symbols of love. In botanical terms, wild roses are referred to as "species roses." They are called species roses since they are wild roses that occur naturally. Most of the roses we see today have been selectively bred for large blooms with numerous petals. Species roses grow as they have from the beginning with no help from humans and are true wildflowers.
Wild roses are often sought out by foragers and herbalists for their edible, nutritious hips in autumn. The petals are also popular amongst herbalists and foragers alike and make great additions to skin care products, teas, syrups and infused honeys. In this video we talk a little about how to identify and harvest wild roses for the home apothecary. I also share some herbal creations that I made with the invasive multiflora roses we have growing here in Pennsylvania. If you are interested in the recipes let me know! I hope you enjoy this video!

I spotted some native roses yesterday when I was kayaking on Norton Reservoir, MA. It had 5 flower pedals and very pink (not ragosa) I uploaded the photo to iNaturalist but no ID yet.

@@SmallSeeds not yet……but the app suggested R. palustris, virginiana, carolina or nitida. I was kayaking on Long Pond, Plymouth today and spotted another rose in bloom……near water so assuming R. palustris.
