CHORUS And it's no nay never (4 claps) no nay never no more (2 claps) will I play the wild rover (1 clap) No never no more (2 claps) I've been the wild rover for manys a year and I spent all my money on whiskey and beer and now I'm returning with gold in great score and I never will play the wild rover no more CHORUS I went into an ale house I used to frequent and I told the landlady my money was spent I asked her for credit she answered me nay such a custom as your I can get any day CHORUS Then out of my pockets I took sovereigns bright and my landlady's eyes opened wide with delight She said, "I have whiskey and wines of the best!" but the answer I gave her was only in jest CHORUS I'll go home to my parents, confess what I've done and I'll ask them to pardon their prodigal son and if they caress my as oft times before than I never will play the wild rover no more CHORUS

Did he not say on the Rainbow quest show with the Clancy brothers in 1965 that he didn't know this song??

Permutation of the Irish classic I was unfamiliar with.

the origins of the song are disputed! Tom Clancy (from the Clancy brothers, not the fascist), said in Seeger's "rainbow quest" that it's an old australian song, and the version they sing is the "irish" version most people are familiar with

He was in Australia in September of 1963, not May.

How old are you, Joe? Acoustic folk singers were given the respect of a quiet audience. You were also not watching very carefully. There was singing along and they were smiling.

@@joesmithmtp I'm 70 and I saw Pete 3-4 times in the late Sixties and early Seventies.I saw him get audiences stirred up and have them quietly captivated in the same show.. He was always loved and always will be. I saw him twice with Arlo.

A wonderful musician, great folk singer who does a lot to inspire the consciousness of those who hear his music. Unfortunately his legacy is tainted by the fact that he was an avowed communist. With that said he is still a pleasure to listen to.

This speaks more about you than of Pete. Say's to me that you are from America where communism is demonized.

It wouldnt be America without at least a few communists.

Delicate topic. You have to avoid terms that can sound judgmental like "avowed". Yes, he joined the Communist Party which was not that unusual for the artists and intellectuals during the social stresses of the Depression. Yes, this definitely hurt his career. I think we should accept his political beliefs as part of the history of protest songs and part of the American heritage from that time. And yes, the Communist Party USA was serious stuff.
