I purchased this truck cap from a company in Australia called Wild Top (Wild-Top.com). I received mine in 10 days for a total cost of around $1200 (which included shipping fees). I upgraded the front and rear panels to include tinted window glass (pvc vinyl) for an additional $199. So, if you want solid twill panels that should cost you $1000 or so, total.
The quality is great. The packaging was great. All the bolt holes lined up perfectly. The installation of the structure was easy and pretty straight forward, though the instructions are just illustrated drawings and include no textual copy. A few words would have helped. They should also used some kind of lettering or numbering system to help identify which parts to use throughout the installation process just to make it simple-stupid and take out a little of the guess work. Honestly, it was pretty easy to put the structure/frame together. Completely happy with that. And I ran with just the structure for a couple weeks, which was actually pretty awesome. Good look and very functional, especially with the load bars (max load 700lbs stationary and 220lbs when moving).
Installing the canvas top by myself was a little challenging. There is a u-clip type hook/rail on the truck cap that needs to clip under the bed, which is tough to do by yourself (doable, just requires will and patience). I had to remove the tops of my Jeep for better access. That said, I took the canvas top off and installed it again, this time getting my wife's help. It was super easy to get on with a helper. This is because she got inside the bed and held these two tabs/pulls on the cap and pull them back while I got the canvas in place. It took less than a minute to get that clip on properly with her help. The canvas top is a snug fit, which is great, but it does make it a bit tough to get it installed. Not too bad on the whole, but that front clip tested my patience.
I think the look and style of it is great though, especially in person. I was a little hesitant ordering it in the first place because I thought the trapezoid angles didn’t look so good on Wild Top’s website. But their photos do not do this cap justice. Looks tough in person.
I’m happy with it. Since it’s only 44lbs, my initial thought was that I could take it on and off easily by simply removed 16 easy-to-get to bolts. Now knowing how much of a pain attaching that front clip is, I’m not sure. Honestly, maybe they should just use some strong magnets to hold the front panel down.
This is the only type of cap like this on the market (a load capable canvas top), and it’s better than half the price of going with a Softopper with a structure over it. I’m satisfied with the Wild Top Truck Cap. Just have some patience on the installation of the canvas. It requires a bit of will power.
