Split cane or bamboo fly rods are things of great beauty, but are they still practical on small Scottish trout streams?
Well, I tried one out today - take a peek and find out! 😊

Fred, can't tell you how refreshing you as your vid. Lest the tire in the river. Please remove it. Aside of that what an amazing place and you are the gentleman for showing it to us. I have seen those rods for sale in China and wondered about their performance characteristics. Nicely done showcasing the split cane. Your commentary and mannerisms reminded me of my fly fishing mentor. My dad. Heaven rest his soul. Started me wee at aged 3 as an eager beaver of a lad. What a gem to find a lovely beat without a sole. Split cane, solitude, an occasional stupid trout to restore the soul. @ 61 and flinging the flyrod for well over 50 years I might come from the States to teach you a thing or two about delicate presentation of dryflies to trout's. But then again we all have a place we are happy, comfortable and content with our abilities and alot of times with fly fishing. Graciously that is certainly enough. May your next angling adventure be colour of the rose.- Markus... Troutbumtradingcompany

I have the same rod and enjoy it. I often prefer the ZhusRods 7'0" four weight when wind is not too strong and when small flies are needed. I also have a Zhus 7-1/2' bamboo fly rod for line 5 that is a pleasure as well. The latter rod is a great tool for penetrating wind, for high sticking small trout streams, for mending the line, and for presenting wind resistant flies. These rods are excellent for fishing flies on or near the surface. Additionally, they are very effective with an indicator and nymphs. The rods are very cost effective and I always purchase the models with an extra tip. Thank you for sharing the beautiful surroundings and for featuring a Zhus bamboo fly rod. Cheers, Ron. Hi Ron and thanks for the comment. Yes it is a nice rod and very different from the carbon rods normally use. It's good to know they are still available too. They are things of beauty. 😊

Hi again Fred, another great video. I have 3 can rods of various lengths and weights made by a gentleman who served his time at Hardy bros and stayed with them for 50 years. What a great character and a real gent. Despite their swing weight they are beautiful to fish with. A reminder of times past when rods, like life itself, went at a different pace altogether.

You are a lucky man Peter. There is something "organic" about cane rods. We are fortunate these days to have so much choice and can select our fly rods to suit both the day and the mood. 😉

Thats a lovely home patch of stream you have. I also enjoy fishing my 6'6" 4wt split cane when conditions are right. Small stream fishing I enjoy the most. Glad to see better fishing and weather that you have now. Thanks for sharing.

Great video Fred. I inherited an old bamboo rod and yet to try it out, it's worth a small fortune but I am planning to go completely old school with it and pair it with a traditional reel and a silk line. I read "A Man May Fish" lately and it inspired me to try the old methods of which I am so curious about. Lovely to see you using this rod, something very easy and natural about it. Thank you.

Thanks for your kind comment. 😊 I take that rod out when I'm in an especially relaxed mood and it's not windy. It really is a delight to cast, so relaxing.

Love split cane rods. I have one that my father built, it's probably as long as yours. I use a #5 line on it, haven't tried any other line yet. Got to use it more but I hardly fish small rivers. Love your videos.

Love this content. What’s the biggest brown you’ve ever had there
@wildfisher
@wildfisher 3 года назад
I've never had a true wild brown there bigger than about a pound and three quarters. I've had bigger sea trout and the odd salmon, but that was years ago. Loads of fish in the river, but mostly modest sized. 😊

Most Bamboo rods are like $2000 to $3000! Was wondering what you paid for that Rod. Great footage!

That one was not expensive. Bought from China 15 - 20 years ago. Think it cost about $200
