Your channel was recommended to me a few weeks ago and I've binged and enjoyed your content thus far. Let me set a few things straight with regards to remarks made in this video. Your comment on Britain respecting customary laws in Botswana echoes the British sensibility of "the empire wasn't that bad" which is very dangerous and erroneous. It's incorrect to claim that the Batswana people had control of their country when it in fact it was the British High Commissioner. I encourage you to look up this history. In addition, the British instituted whites-only areas in then Bechuanaland and the colonial state policies subverted indigenous economic interests and stifled opportunites for private capital accumulation by native Batswana people, while actively promoting the economic interests of a small white settler class. Let's not forget that Seretse Khama, eventually first president and general all round hero, was exiled by the British from his own country. Racism and marginalisation cannot be on a sliding scale where certain levels are palatable.
Hi, my main point with the informative part of this video wasn't that 'the British empire wasn't so bad', it was more that in this instance the British Empire didn't plunder this country for all it's recourses, and look at how much better it's doing today compared to it's neighbours. Colonialism of all forms is a stain on human history and not something I intended to make excuses for - I wrote the script based upon information I found on Google (probably not thoroughly enough!), and I do think if Botswana had been invaded and ruled by white South Africa it would've been far worse off than what had happened (although obviously it would've been better if colonialism had not happened for anyone). I'll pin your comment to give more context and I do apologise for my clumsy research. Thanks
I missed the premiere again... I'm sorry, I'm just gonna upload normally from now on as it's not fair on you guys tuning in... Next video will be in a couple of weeks on Wednesday (probably)!
