In this video I share with you my first hand experience with my Wilderness Systems Aspire 105. I discuss why I chose the Aspire and what I like about it specifically with it's features and design. I also take it out on the water to show you how it performs!!!!!
This Kayak is best Kayak out there for under $1000 and blows away anything you would find at any sporting goods store like Dick's, Cabelas, Bass Pro, Academy, Gander Mountain, etc. Don't spend $600 on a generic Kayak which you can catch these on sale from places like www.backcountry.com and get this kayak for the SAME PRICE. As I say in the video having a more professional level kayak greatly IMPROVES THE EXPERIENCE. If you are a beginner or amateur kayaker, I highly encourage you to check out the Aspire 105.

I completely agree with your review, this kayak is excellent. Presently, I also own a Perception Sound and a Jackson Tupelo, but I prefer the W.S. Aspire hands down. I found the seat to be extremely comfortable, especially for tall people like myself. After using a cumbersome SOT that was a pain to car-top, I found this is much more stable in rivers when compared to many other kayaks. It has plenty of space in the cockpit for fishing equipment and has a secure feel with the knee pads. We just got back from a trip in class I, II and a few small III rapids, and the Aspire did great. I love the W.S. back compartment hatches and how they seal securely. The skeg is nice for open water and helps the boat stay straight on windy days. The only thing I have found to be a negative is the back part of the seat can get stuck under the back part of the frame - a pain to get unstuck. I can get it up to about 4.5 mph, but for normal cruising speed, 2.5 mph is about right. Overall, LOVE this kayak

I went through the very same thought processes when shopping for my kayak. I took up the sport a year and a half ago using a cheap inflatable just to see if it would be a good fit. Took a great class for the basics and never looked back. I very soon became disenchanted with the inflatable and started to seriously shop for a hard shell. I also settled on the Aspire 105 specifically for the stability, wider cock pit and the drop down skeg. I find the boat tracks pretty nicely under the best conditions without the skeg but it is invaluable in rough conditions and ESPECIALLY under windy conditions which here in New Mexico is most of the time. I plan to take it out on the Sea of Cortez in San Carlos Sonora Mexico which is somewhat sheltered with very few shore waves. I shopped hard for the best deal on my boat and when I discovered a brand new 2016 model being offered on eBay from an outfitter based out of New York at $623 I finally pulled the trigger. It did cost to ship it but since no one offers Wilderness Systems here in NM I was going to have to pay for shipping anyway. They also threw in a decent paddle. Except for the 48lbs it weighs making it a challenge to get up and down from my Cayenne I love this boat. I have figured out a work around for the loading and unloading with the use of a bathroom rug which aids in sliding up and down without damaging the finish or the hatch window. This is by far the best boat, in my opinion for flat water and recreational kayaking. And it is considered a cross over up to class 2 conditions. Finding a spray skirt is a bit of a challenge but I don’t find much water gets in on flat water trips and a good car sponge does the trick. There is a very cool video about how to outfit it with some cool storage solutions for yakpaking on RU-vid by Peter Braginton. Highly recommend them. Great video. Thanks.

Thanks Gail! I appreciate your comments. BTW what color did you get? For a kayak skirt I got mine from Back Country out of Utah. They were very helpful and looked up the size for my Aspire 105. Anyone watching this in Aug 2022- the 100 is discontinued. I confirmed with WS. I bought the 105 instead, although its bigger.

Hi Marshal, I would check out the fishing kayaks from Wilderness systems as they will have more of those features that you need but still be an awesome kayak worthy of the money spent. I got mine from www.backcountry.com and they were an EXCELLENT company to buy from.

Great video, Thank you for sharing the details. Guys if I am 180 pounds, 6', athletic guy, runner, should I buy the Aspire 100 or should I go with the Aspire 105? Does anybody has an opinion. I checked the dimensions of each and so I know the 105 is wider and longer but is it necessary. I know I should go to a store and check it out, I was just curious.

get the 105 if you are 6ft, you'll need the extra leg room.

I had my heart set on the Pungo 105 until I saw the Aspire 105 and now I'm not sure which one to get. Can you recommend one over the other. I'm 5'3" and only 113 lbs and I'm a beginner/intermediate kayaker but never owned my own. Thanks!

Karyn, at your height I would get the aspire 100. Same exact kayak just a little bit shorter and a little bit less weight. You’ll be fine with the 105 also I have both of them and they are amazing.

There is a huge price difference! Walmart and such stores will have you at $200 or less.

Charlie I'd say if you were going to Kayak like maybe once a year, sure a $200 Kayak from Walmart will get you by, it won't be comfortable but it will get the job done. If you plan do this more frequently and really get into it, think of it like this, those generic Walmart, etc. cheap ones are like a cheap bare bones economy car and this Wilderness Systems stuff is like a BMW. I've used both and the difference is immediately noticeable. It makes the "experience" so much more enjoyable too. Watch for deals in the fall from companies like www.backcountry.com as you can catch closeouts on these $900-1000 original price Wilderness Systems ones for like $600 which is a steal!

Form personal experience I bought a field and stream blade for $200 normally $300. It’s not bad for the money but it has one downfall that most cheap kayaks will have and most will be worse than mine in that price range and that’s the seat. Mine kills me 2.5-3.0 hours in. So now two seasons later looking to upgrade to something with a better seat. Another issue cheap kayaks will have is not traveling straight. But theirs nothing wrong with going cheap or even used first starting out to see what up like and don’t like.
