Thanks Joshua. There has been quite a bit of time since you posted this video but the lesson learn taught is still current. In concept changing the Skeg appears to be a twenty minute fix. I appreciated that you did this in real time. I appreciate your honesty. You solved the problems most people would have encountered in this repair. I was thinking about buy the Wilderness System Aspire 105 myself. You have had this kayak over a year. What is your opinion on this boat? With what you have already learned, would you purchased this kayak again? Has the Skeg broken again? Have you encountered any another other problems? Or have you moved on to another type/style of kayak? Have you modified the Aspire 105?
Lester Walton I still have the aspire. It is a great boat. I have not had any other problems with it. I have done a couple 3 day trips and a 4 day trip. It holds all my camping gear great. The only modification I have made was to add a rod holder for fishing.
Thanks Joshua for the information. Did you take any self recovery lessons and/or padding lessons? My area has quite a few ponds and lakes but very little places to get lessons. I get all my "lessons" from the RU-vid community. Have you taken the Aspire near ocean shore conditions? I realize that Aspire is not made for rough surf but I have seen some individuals wondering out there - there are always a few!
@@richpeiffer6274 Hey Rich, I'm also looking for a replacement skeg for my 105. I was wondering if you were able to get one from Wilderness Systems. Thanks!
@@briangoodman8990 Have not had any chance to even try. I was just going to email them with my situation and see what they would say. I know I can't buy them from the website and the place they direct me to does not carry them either. Sorry I'm not much help!
@@richpeiffer6274 Hey there! I called them and they just said, "we don't sell those direct, you have to contact a dealer". I called Austin Kayaks and they had no idea how to get a replacement. It's frustrating because I love my Aspire 105, but it doesn't track straight without a skeg. Good luck finding one!
WysteriaGuitar the skeg was down. I pulled it all the way up on the bank. It was fully packed with gear for a multi day yakpacking trip. And I pushed it backward into the water. It was user error.
