Wildfire evacuations ordered in New Mexico

Officials are urging immediate evacuations as two wildfires near the Ruidoso village in southern New Mexico. Around 500 structures have already burned, New Mexico Forestry Division communications coordinator George Ducker tells CBS News.

My wife and I moved back to my home state after years of putting up with forest fires in northern California. The last fire came within a mile of our home after it had destroyed over 1,000 homes. A number of people lost their lives. You can't believe how fast these fires can travel.

Over a million tourists a year visit Ruidoso NM it is a resort town with lots of cabins and condos, plus resorts, skiing, and horse racetrack. Pray for the animals too, so little time to evacuate

A waste of effort since prayer does not work.' What will stop the fire are the firefighters. Pity your your god does not send a foot of rain in a day like he is doing in Florida.

@@jarniwoop I had to look that "god" up. I responded to "praying" which people keep posting almost always about the Jewish god of Abraham worshiped by Jews, Christians and Muslims. The god that works in mysterious ways. The god that sees (allegedly) Ruidoso burning and is either indifferent or enjoys the suffering. Either way you will get the same results praying to that god as you would praying to a tree in your backyard.

I fought fire for 13 years on minimal wages, which aren't enough to make it worthwhile today. Now we have a shortage of fire fighters. Support giving them a living wage, or get yourself a pulaski and a fire shirt.

I feel so sorry for the people affected by the fires. Hope the damages are minimal. It has been dry for the past couple of weeks here in Virginia. I pray and hope it doesn't start here on the east coast as the forecast for the coming weeks is hot and dry.

I love Ruidoso so much went there many times as a child, my own kids were just down there a few weeks ago fishing with their grandparents, and we were planning on going sometime within the next few weeks 😞💔 such a beautiful town, praying for Ruidoso 🙏💕

Us in Roswell are doing our best to help out all evacuees. My church home, Church on the Move is one of many places offering refuge to people who have been forced from their home. We have accommodations in the main sanctuary as well as clothes, shoes, toiletries, blanket, pillows, food, and water. Was there serving today and was able to help out. It is so sad seeing so many people displaced from their homes but we are continuing to pray for New Mexico and are doing our best to provide exceptional hospitality and support to all evacuees out of the Ruidoso area.

Tried to buy a house in Ruidoso last year and both local and national insurance agents said it was uninsurable due to the "fire line." Can't imagine what the renewal rates will be for those still there.

I feel like more and more towns across the country are going to face this as natural disasters become more frequent and severe. Some insurers are completely pulling out of states like Florida and California.

I work in ABQ daily. Work with first responders, and this is like a day and night incident for how fast and far it's gotten. But today, I was told that they are bringing in semi convoys for stores to evacuate produce and Necessity items. . They hope to get as many needed items as possible. Looks like they planned for the worse. 😕

The governor was on Face The Nation, and explains while its been a challenging week, there are no problems with the federal government providing assistance for the people of New Mexico. FEMA is there to provide aid to all, Biden's recent border policy continues to help manage control with any asylum seekers crossing the borders. Life is good.

It is terrifying seeing temperatures rises all over the world. People are being told to leave their homes when a wildfire approaches, why? Because people live in areas that are wildfire hazards. Build your house in the forest under the trees is like piling kindling over your property. Men who run away to percieved safety with the women and children then watch their house burn down because they were too cowardly or lazy to pick up a garden hose. These houses burn most times from embers in the attic or roof gutters that can easily be extinguised with a garden hose. I've seen many many times being in the fire service 36 years.
