This is a result of the African tectonic plate rotating clockwise which has caused the rock layers of its boundaries to split apart releasing methane gas from trapped vegetation and generating electric discharge. The resulting gap was then filled with molten rock which superheated the surface. This combination of events is what sparked the wildfires.
