In the waning days of a wet winter, Arizona's Sonoran Desert and the surrounding chaparral all light up with color as spring wildflowers bloom across the region. Today we're exploring the Mazatzal Mountains that lay between Phoenix and the town of Payson, and talk about how the changing seasons transform this unique ecosystem.
Most of the footage from this video was taken on the Deer Creek Loop trail, an 18-mile trek through the Mazatzal Wilderness Area. The deeper you get, the more technical the terrain gets; I wouldn't recommend this as a day hike to anyone but the most experienced backcountry explorers.
If you want to get a feel for this place, I'd recommend following the Alltrails route below and turning around when you hit Davey Gowan's gravesite (it's marked by a picket fence in a modest little grove; there's no way you'll miss it). Returning at this point gives you leisurely seven-mile hike through a beautiful mountain valley.

Wildflower season really is the best, especially because it’s the last gasp of good weather we get before the summer 😂 Thank you for watching!

This looks like a beautiful area to explore. I love all the information you share in your videos. I've never heard of stinket before, but I'm from the East Coast. Glad you are sharing awareness about the invasive species.

Stinknet’s mostly just in California and Arizona, but it’s becoming a big ecological problem in the Southwest; especially because many people still don’t recognize the threat it poses because it looks nice. Thank you so much for watching!

Maricopa County and PHX Parks Dept host volunteer events all the time! Maybe we’ll see each other there sometime. Thanks for watching!

The best part is another mile or so past the grave.Cascading water through giant boulders. There was a stone hut there before the fire and following floods took it out.

True! I think the grave serves as a good “out and back” marker for people who aren’t familiar with backcountry trails like this because it’s impossible to miss.

I did! This is near a spot on Highway 87 north of Saguaro Lake where the Tonto wild horses often graze. Thank you for watching!
