Sedona is the most famous travel destination in Arizona after the Grand Canyon, and has a developed a reputation among some in the outdoor recreation community for being an overcrowded tourist trap. Today we’ll talk about how this town got to be the way it is today, and whether there’s any wilderness left to be found among the red rocks.
TRAIL INFORMATION: Taking the North Wilson Mountain Trail to the town overlook is roughly an eight mile round trip hike, with around 2,500 ft. of elevation gain, give or take. Going to both the town overlook and the canyon overlook is about ten miles with a little over 2,600 ft. of elevation. This hike isn’t for beginners.
The trailhead’s a small paved lot. If you go during the offseason like we did, you might literally be the only people there. If you go during peak Sedona tourist season (late March-late May), plan to start early to beat the crowds-- but know you’ll still find far more solitude than you will at Sedona’s more “famously infamous” trails like Cathedral Rock or Devil’s Bridge.

I didn't know mountain lions hibernate...
@Wilderness-Will
@Wilderness-Will 4 месяца назад
It would've been better for me to say "when cubs start becoming more active." Adult mountain lions don't hibernate, and are often even more active in the winter. Most mountain lion kittens are born in the late summer and they're very dependent on their mothers to keep them alive through their first winter, so they stay put and stay inactive. By late winter and early spring, they’ve grown up a bit and start venturing out onto hunts with their mothers. During spring the kittens are, in a way, coming out of their own “hibernation,” and that puts their mothers on higher alert than ever.

I never knew about Sedona being a Hollywood filming location, that totally makes sense how it became so popular. I love that you share a little bit about the places you hike in your videos!! You and Brittany make a great team 🥰

This video was awesome!! You had so many elements we love. I watch many videos Ron is very busy when he gets gone I show him my favorites and ones I know he will like can't wait to show him yours. The filming and editing was great love how Brittany sorta interviews and ask questions Ron and I do that a lot. Your information on how to react if you see a Mt lion or a bear was good advice and done well. Your facts and information about Sedona and this particular Hike was great. This was entertaining and informative and not boring. Enjoyed your personal touches we actually use to big bigger hikers and marathon runners getting sedative is so bad. Did u ever see the documentary on the Barkley ultra marathon through woods and all night u may like it. It was done so well and is fun to watch inspiring. I lived in Arizona for 5 years and. Can't wait to take Ron we understand on what you said about leaving mountains that's how we felt whenever we left the PNW we love our mountains, woods and the ocean. Colorado is very beautiful as well!! Great video!!! Keep up the fitness and making more videos !!

Thank you so much! Brittany does the editing on these bigger videos and she's an amazing cinematographer. Sedona's a beautiful place, sounds like you must've done some exploring here when you lived in AZ! It looks like you and Ron have some awesome adventures these days; can't wait to see where the road takes you next. Thank you for watching!

This was so nice! Beautiful hike! I like the bug trails. "A mountain lion knows it can kill you" The power of confidence 😮 I enjoyed the information, and hearing about how you started hiking 😊

Happy birthday Will! My life has a similar story. I grew up in Arizona and had to move to Indiana for a number of years to find work. While there I dreamed every day of returning to the Az mountains. Now I find myself out in the woods every chance I get. Keep up the great videos!

Thank you Brett! I’m glad you’re able to find some wilderness in your own backyard. Ever been up to Indiana Dunes NP? There’s some great hilly hiking up there!

I wonder: which hike is your favorite”favorite”, most challenging, and a hike you look forward to most?
@Wilderness-Will
@Wilderness-Will 4 месяца назад
Those are great questions! My favorite hike of all has to be Mount Baldy near Pinetop, AZ- it feels more like Montana than Arizona. The toughest day hike I’ve ever down was a “thru hike” of the McDowell Mountains; about 16 miles and about 4,000 ft. elevation gain.
