I spent a few mornings and evenings out on the North York Moors trying to photograph Curlew and Lapwing, and any other wildlife that I came across. Being out in these sorts of places is what wildlife photography is all about for me.

I think you will find that where there are ground nesting birds that nests, red foxes and badgers are being hunted. It used to be that this was done to protect the lambs in Spring, but with ensilage, the grass harvest is sufficient to keep the lambs protected until they are fox proof. And that means that hunting is no longer necessary for lambs. Some will still hunt to protect huntable species.

Thanks for the info. Whilst I was there I didn’t see many foxes (just the one) or badgers, but there were plenty of Barn owls, birds of prey, and gulls about. These will also take young when the opportunity arises.
@tarjei99

These are covered by the collective defence of the ground nesting birds. I've seen Lapwings rise to defend against birds of prey. However a Goshawk would be too much. They can't defend against foxes and badgers. Hence evacuation.

@@tarjei99 predation still counts for most nest failures, though, and as with many conservation issues, the studies are often complex and varied. All the information that I mention is not my own thoughts on these issues, but is often from multiple sources, such as the BTO, the RSPB, Curlew action and other bodies who deal with the conservation of these birds.

Thanks for commenting. Much appreciated. Good luck with your shoot. It’s great spending time out with the camera; it forces you to spend more time out in nature, which can only be a good thing. Hope you get some cracking shots. Once again, thanks for taking the time to comment. Happy shooting.

Thanks for the comment. Much appreciated. I’ve still got to get a shot of a SEO that I’m really happy with, and I was surprised by how beneficial car shooting was, so may well try that next time! I’m glad you’re enjoying the content. I’m having a good time making it, so it’s good to know you’re enjoying it. Happy shooting.

Thanks. I’ve given you a follow back, too. I started photography with landscape, and after seeing some of yours, I think I might have to get out again - it’s been trickier to get to the good spots on lockdown, but now that’s eased a bit, the mountains are calling!

Just found your channel and loving the videos. Not been onto the moors but would love to photograph the curlew from my car but wouldn’t know where to go - any pointers please as to ideal areas?
@thewildfather
@thewildfather 3 года назад
Thanks you. Any of the small roads through the moors are good, as the curlew can be anywhere. The Rosedale and Wheeldale areas are my go-to areas, as there are good views from the car and the ground is at a good height for those soft foregrounds. Thanks for taking the time to comment, and happy shooting!
