Join Brian Collins and Bruce Leventhal as they remain close to home and follow social distancing guidelines while photographing herons, egrets, and cormorants by kayak and canoe. This video covers some photography field techniques and natural history of these gregarious waterbirds. Brian uses the Gander Mountain Guide Series Elite 10.4 kayak, and Bruce tries Brian's Old Town Guide 119 for the first time with outstanding results! Come along for the ride!

Another great video and another great time at the Heron Rookery Brian... This shoot is the one thing I do as a way to end winter and begin spring. Needless to say, I can't wait for another go in 2021! Cheers mate

Looking forward to the day! Between now and then, get an Old Town Guide 119, and maybe I'll get a Nikon D500! Perhaps we'll film a few "twin boat, twin camera" adventures! :-) Thousand Thanks! Cheers!

Nice images and video. Did you go back before the chicks fledged? I appreciated the information on the gear you were using and look forward to future videos.

Enjoyable vid. You mention a bunch of people out east got together. What state was this filmed in?

Nice video. Little gutsy being in a kayak with camera gear ????

Haha! True! Very true! On teachers' salaries (with support of our wives in healthcare), Bruce and I tend to purchase used gear, and I have mine insured with business "drop" insurance. Getting the equipment in unusual places gets unusual images! (By the way, I enjoyed your turkey photography and fox squirrel tips video! Will be checking out more! Keep up the good work!) ...Regarding canoes, I have only rolled a canoe three times in 47 years (age 3 to age 50), but once it involved cameras. I put a perfectly good Canon 7D with Canon 300mm f4L IS to the bottom of the Brule River in 2015...hit a submerged spruce snag, and it was all over! The river was shallow and clear, so once I got the canoe to shore, I waded back out, dove down, and grabbed the camera. Canon wouldn't consider repairing it (they looked it over and pretty much just apologized). But...$500 deductible later, and I had replaced the equipment. $500 for 12 years with a lens and two years with a camera body and wildlife photography was a good deal! I tried to persuade the insurance company that they were being too generous, but they insisted! Great days ahead! Keep making the videos and the images!

@@stcroixoutdoors Brian thanks for the words. Keep at it if kayaking works do it. I shoot micro 4/3 a lot for the price savings. Full frame digital has yet to hit its prime with the costs to benefits ratio for guys like me.

What type of kayak are you using??

What is the location ?

I won't reveal this location, but I can tell you that Minnesota and Wisconsin have many accessible rookeries. Some are better than others, but they all change from year to year, some really improving in their final years as the herons' droppings eventually kills the trees, making branches open and photos cleaner.
