Wilhelm Hosenfeld was born on the 2nd of May 1895 in Hünfeld, then part of the German Empire. His family was Catholic, and he grew up in a conservative German patriotic environment. Wilhelm followed in his father's footsteps and graduated as a teacher. Christian charitable work was strongly emphasized during his upbringing, and he was also influenced by Prussian obedience and German patriotism.
The First World War began on 28 July 1914. Hosenfeld enlisted in the German army and served as an infantryman. He returned home seriously wounded in 1917 and for his service he received the Iron Cross Second Class. After the First World War ended on 11 November 1918 Hosenfeld worked as a schoolteacher and in 1920, he married Annemarie Krummacher, a staunch pacifist. The marriage produced 5 children.
On 30 January 1933, Adolf Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany by President Paul von Hindenburg. Hardly any other professional group supported Hitler as fanatically as German teachers and Hosenfeld was no exception especially in early stages of the Nazi-regime. He joined the SA in 1933 and 2 years later he became a member of the Nazi Party. In 1936 he participated in the Nuremberg Rally and noted in his diary: "I was overwhelmed by the experience of the large group in which we marched. It's like being at war." On 10 March 1936, he wrote: "Goebbels is a great public speaker. He is persuasive."
However, after he read Adolf Hitler’s 1925 autobiographical manifesto “Mein Kampf” meaning “ My struggle” and saw the deadly consequences of the Nazis’ rise to power he grew disillusioned with the regime and kept journals detailing the abuse of Jews and others. Mein Kampf promoted the key components of Nazism: rabid antisemitism, a racist world view, and an aggressive foreign policy geared to gaining Lebensraum meaning the living space in eastern Europe.
The Second World War started on the 1 September 1939 with the invasion of Poland. Warsaw suffered heavy air attacks and artillery bombardment and German troops entered the capital on 29 September shortly after its surrender. The campaign in Poland ended on the 6 October the same year with Germany and the Soviet Union dividing and annexing the whole of the country.
On the 23 November 1939, German civilian occupation authorities required Warsaw's Jews to identify themselves by wearing white armbands with a blue Star of David. The German authorities closed Jewish schools, confiscated Jewish-owned property, and conscripted Jewish men into forced labor and dissolved prewar Jewish organizations.

Many Hosenfelds without the opportunity to act and many Goeths without the opportunity to act. Look around yourselves, the potentials to act accordingly can be found in any of us. Our observation tells us who might belong to which category if the opportunity were given.

It's funny but most people don't even know the atrocious things their government does today. And also don't realize had they been in Germany at that time most likely they would have been a SS or a soldier or supporter of the lunatic in charge. Same as people today do not even know the USA drone strikes people based on algorithm meta data. USA killed over a million civilians in Iraq.

This story is very important, because it shows that many people can see dictators as good politicians and saviors of their nation from problems, but people can still choose to save lives, not destroy them. Wilhelm Hosenfeld is example of man who chose to do what's right in extra hard times for many people and in nation that nurtured and idolised brutality against other people

Yes, as a German, I wish I would've also learned about people like him in school and not just about the atrocities committed by the Nazis. History class in school has taught me, not to become a nazi, which of course is important, but by also teaching about people like Hosenfeld and many others like him, it could've provided role models and teach students not only to not be evil, but to be a force for good and actively fight evil.

What the Pianist movie did NOT show you (Hollywood and politics again), was that he certainly DID try to save him, and went through great lengths just to try to help him get released from that Soviet P.O.W. prison... But Stalin simply wasn't gonna let that happen! Before passing, he entrusted his son to at least help Hosenfeld get honored as a 'Righteous Among the Nations' in Israel. Just hearing about how that German officer went completely out of his way to save Jews, and tried help them in any way that he can is already VERY emotional and touching. I saw a movie about the life of the Pianist you mentioned in this video. Hosenfeld saved his life, the man was in poor shape and there was no way he would have survived that last winter as the Russians were closing in on Warsaw. It is sad that Wilhelm Hosenfeld suffered as he did, but many suffered under Stalin, many suffered far worse. If there is a bright side, it is only that his son lived to know that the Jewish people saw him as a good and decent man.

This begs the question and point that had the many had the courage this man did ww2 wouldn't have happened in the first place. Or, at the very least had a harder time. Why would seemingly ordinary people become evil nazis? Why not everyone just say we're not doing that?

Because even to this day. Most people have the herd mentality. They follow whatever they see the masses doing and don't really think too hard for themselves. Any idea that is popular, even if the idea is totally wrong. The majority tend to follow it. Most people are followers and Not leaders and will do what they see the majority doing, they believe what the majority believe without question and people are still like this to this day, that's why it will always be a possibility that such atrocities can happen again.

This is an excellent presentation. It might have been October rather than August 1944 when Hosenfeld met Szpilman the pianist, but I do not know really. August and September the city was still full of people and fighting the AK uprising and only in October deserted. The pianist stayed in deserted city, in a full of people and fighting city he did not need a German officer encounter for food or any other reason.

It causes me great pain to say this, but no good deeds go unpunished and yes, life can be most cruel and unfair. This man tried to do what he could in the position that he was in to help out those who were being persecuted and mistreated in ways too cruel to imagine and comprehend. I just wished that he could have fled westward back into Germany and escaped the advance of the Soviet Red Army instead of being captured by it and having to endure a slow, painful and agonizing death at the hands of his Soviet captors. I never would have believed that an actual German Army officer and official member of the Nazi party could have gone completely against his own army and government and risked truly horrible consequences for himself and his family if his actions were discovered by his fellow Germans for helping out Jews and Poles in occupied Warsaw during WW 2 and decades later being officially proclaimed as "righteous among the nations" by the government of Israel.

Please consider doing a story of Oberleutant Albert Battel. He saved Jews from being deported to Belzec extermination camp. He is recognized at Yad Vashem.

I believe that is the most understated statement I've ever seen/read/heard! They were rough on the prisoners. They baked people alive! Hundreds of thousands per day.
@DawnSuttonfabfour
@DawnSuttonfabfour 6 месяцев назад
@@lynnenewell2016 Yes it is understated I agree. As a lover of history I am sadly aware of the levels of barbarity of the treatment meted out by the Russians. As someone once said, during WW2, specially when they spread across a completely unknown (to them) Europe and they saw the world. however, the world saw them, too. And we can never say we didn't. Red in tooth and claw.

I would love to see a documentary about how we Germans got treated in the SSSR. I know that Paulus and other Generals got treated very good. But the others... experienced hell. How did they actually die? From starvation? Or through work? Or both? Or were they tortured/massacred?

Understandable considering what the Germans did to them (look up Nazi treatment of Soviet prisoners let alone Jews), but unfortunate for this good man Mr Hosenfeld

It’s ironic that a good man was brutally tortured.. But Japanese commanders responsible for the most heinous war crimes on hundreds of thousands of prisoners and civilians (even the Nazis themselves criticised their sadistic cruelty) were granted immunity by the Americans and lived to their old age and became successful in post war Japan………..
