Wanted to try and make some wooden disc golf discs for some friends as gifts. Wanted them to look good and if they actually flew...well that would be icing on the cake. Hope you enjoy.

Nice TURN! A hint to help you getting your project off the glue block is to cut a cross in your glue at least 1/4 x 1/4 inch. This give one a place to pry from. Go slowly and rotate the piece and pry from all 4 corners. If done correctly, not damage to your piece and no glue clean up! SAFE TURNING, John.

Of course it flies! I have turned over a dozen discs which I used as trophies, but I did test fly a few of them. What I found was that discs will be destroyed quickly unless they are plywood made from very tough woods. And so I ordered a bunch of laminated discs from Brad at Flywood - a now-defunct wooden golf disc maker. Brad made his own blanks from hand-made laminates of maple and something - I forget. The upshot is that the discs are extremely tough, and they are not harmed by impacts unless they hit asphalt or rocks. They also make an amazing sound when they hit trees, or the chains. Sadly, the PDGA requires discs to be flexible, so they could never be used in competition.

Jody's Woodworking Glad to share. Yeah cut a few pieces different sizes. Between the friction, multiple kinds of rubber in the pad and downward pressure from the sander makes it “stick”. After awhile vacuum off the dust and you’re good to go again. Have you ever thought about making and selling the wooden discs?

shave off more wood and bring it to 180g or 175 and see how it flies. Would be more accurate with what most of us throw. Imagine a balsa 130 wt. .Make sure your down wind with that one. For toughness use Lignum Vitae. The old wooden bowling ball material. Probably would level a forest with it. LoL Thanks for making this video.
@doktarr
@doktarr 6 лет назад
@@markhumphrey8894 For something as thin as a disc, the grain of the wood is at least as important as the hardness. You might not be able to dent some hardwoods but if you made a disc out of them they'd be liable to split.
@subspaceanomaly
@subspaceanomaly 4 года назад
I made a wooden clone of a discraft ultrastar, using plywood. The unequal weight distribution in the wood with knots etc made it fly too understable, at least that's why I think that happened. Good for practicing throws as unless you time it well flowing with the disc you might break your fingers. I use it as a bowl as using it as a frisbee wasn't really worth the bother

I expect you've already thought of this, but just to bring it up, since various woods have different densities, you can get almost any weight (within the usual disc weights of 140 to 175 g) by trying different types of wood, while still keeping the same form, thickness and dimensions. I'm guessing poplar might put you in the right weight range and has cool colors and wood grain patterns. The walnut one looks cool, but I'd not want to get hit by one of heavy ones if thrown hard ! I like the video !

Place a sheet of paper between the pine and hardwood surfaces when gluing them together. That way they will separate easily when your done turning.
@ry746
@ry746 6 лет назад
I too am curious as to how many grams it weighs. Also I think using different woods laminated together would make a wooden disc perform better. Use the heaviest densest wood at the area the rim is thickest and the lightest (bass maybe?) for the flight plate. And maybe a wood in between the two. I understand this would be fragile but it might stay in the air longer. Shoot for something under 175 g!
