I'm not buying 170 million Americans on tiktok. Population is 332 million. There is no way that 50% of the US population is on the app.

recently did a poll that asked if "Do you have a TikTok account?". Just over 3k answers, exactly 75% of the participants said they did not own TikTok. Even so, I can still see over 50% of Americans using it.

@@Smokie181 Highly unlikely. Just playing on generational math it's in the impossible range. The silent generation as of 2019 consisted of 23 million people. The Baby Boomer generation is approximately 71 million, 65 million for Gen X. Those three age categories make up 159 million and would be nearly absent as users. To get even close to the number you would need 100% of the population born after 1980. What is far more likely is a very large number of bot accounts.

@@dwarfgrumpy It's up there. Just search "How many American use tiktok daily". The number seems to bounce around between 25%-45% of Americans use it. Being more popular among the teenager and younger adults.

US should also ban some games like Geshin Impact, AOV, MLBB, LOL, PUBG, Clash Royale, Counter Strike, cause they are all operated by Chinese companies or the Chinese companies holds a lot of stocks. And ban any made in China Apple products, Walmart/Costco products. Then there will not be better substitute apps/games and the shelves are empty.

@@paulwilliams2024 Sure, but look at the iPhone, iPad, Macbook’s boxes, assembled in where? Yes they move some of them, but only for AirPods, Watch, some small stuff yet. Even they are all not manufactured in China, a lot of revenue of Apple come from Chinese market, it can’t be replaced easily.

I'm conflicted - I see the negative impact it has, but I am firm believer of complete and total freedom of internet/information. Part of me thinks that the responsibility falls onto the parents to raise their kids right and teach them about the dangers of being on TikTok.

@@0Ciju0 National security (of any nation) does not fall on parents. This isn't about the dangers of social media that is harmful to kids and teenagers - where TikTok isn't the only contender BTW. This is about a foreign entity getting access to millions of people (youths as well as ignorant, non-techsavvy adults), exerting influence on them and getting their personal, geolocation and biometric data (think voice and facial recognition) [which includes anyone else in those videos not necessarily consenting to being recorded]. US entities (google, meta, amazon etc.) are already doing it (which isn't okay) but giving this data to a potential adversary is of a national security concern. India as well as many EU countries already blocked TikTok. The US (and '5 eyes') are just realizing the dangers.

This is a problem and should have never passed. I am against tik-tok, but the whole reason this went through was to target other platforms like X and Rumble. AOC has already accused X's algorithm change of impacting the results of the 2022 midterms.
