2017’s Justice League is considered by many to be one of the biggest ‘missed opportunities’ in modern cinematic history, a film which promised to bring together the biggest heroes of DC Comics and usher in a new Golden Age for the company’s cinematic endeavours, but found itself myered in production trouble. In Part 1 of this video series, we discussed George Miller’s 2008 Justice League: Mortal film, and the factors which led to its creation, production and cancellation. At the conclusion of that video, I mentioned how Warner Bros had opted to develop standalone feature films in the vein of Christopher Nolan’s successful Batman series, including a live-action debut for Green Lantern, and a rebooted, fresh take on Superman. In this video, I want to discuss the development of the film that became Man of Steel, and another project which was being developed alongside it - Justice League, from a now scrapped screenplay by writer Will Beall, and how these two projects lay the foundations for the future of the DC Extended Universe, and ultimately embarked us on the path which led to 2017’s Justice League.

That Beale script actually sounds amazing. With slight tweaking it would have fit perfectly post BVS. I can just imagine how disheartened everyone involved feels to have gone from this initial plan to the Frankenstein creature of a movie we got.

What's actually interesting is that Beal is credited as one of the three writers behind the story for the Msyxer cut, alongside Chris Terrio and Zack Snyder himself. What that tells me is that the movie is gonna incorporate stuff from Beal's script into the Snyder Cut. Honestly if you look at what the plot basically is and look at all the characters that are gonna be in the movie, it makes total sense: Having Desaad as a secondary antagonist, establishing Darkseid and his rule over Apokolips, having Steppenwolf as a threat, having Superman be under some kind of mind control or whatever to fight the Justice League, etc.

As a long-time DC fan and reader, I would have embraced the original concept of these heroes being established and already a team. Warner Brothers seems to think that they are going to make movies for everybody, and they end up making movies which comics fans hate.So, not only do they NOT attract new viewers, they also alienate their built-in audience.

That's the conundrum you see. If they had made this version of JL it would only appeal to fans who know the characters. Everyone else would have trouble identifying with and caring about the characters because they wouldn't have been established.

@@maildotmjk GOTG focused on Peter though establishing his origin and the rest of the first act introduced all the main characters and their general backstories as they related to the overarching narrative. I don't think they could do that with the JL. Just because most people know the big 3 doesn't necessarily mean we know their film counterparts. Look at Snyder's Superman, he's pretty far removed from any version we've known before. Ideally there has to be time for the audience to get to know and connect with each character, establish relationships, establish motives, and have it serve a narrative that's interesting and has stakes. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it's easier to accomplish these things if they were addressed prior to a major ensemble film.

Beale's script sounded great but I bet executives read it and thought it would be way too expensive and required too much commitment (2-3 films). WB execs are fools because that's precisely what they needed given that they chose to reject building up to it with individual movies for each character first.

The Batman and Wonder Woman dialogue in the Justice League film was genuinely intriguing but sadly it was all but ignored due to the numerous problems of the film.

What's actually really interesting is that Will Beal is credited as one of the writers of the story for the Snyder Cut, alongside Chris Terrio and Zack Snyder himself. The screenplay is gonna be written by Terrio. So it looks like this script was kidna reworked for Snyder's verison of Justice League. EDIT: After kidna looking into every part of what this video says about Beal's script, it does definetely seem like some of the stuff was reworked into the Snyder cut. With the inclusion of Desaad as a secondary antagonist, Steppenwolf's threat, the establishing of Darkseid and his rule of Apokolips, etc. Seems like that's why Beal's name is being put on the film in the story.

I saw that, I definitely think the reason Beal is credited is due to the larger presence of the Knightmare scenes, that whole subplot seems to be a carry over from his script.

Both this and MORTAL are pretty ambitious projects that could have worked sure but they both throw so much at the audience. Beall's would probably work better as a two-parter because it will get some padding by default.

I'm actual really sad, I've been worshipping the DCEU movies since Man of steel and DC Comics since I could read, It sad for someone whose devoted their childhood and life for the love of these characters being misused, mishandled and mis-interpreted by the people above the writers/producers/directors of the movies... I just wish they respected each other more and trusted one another... the original 5 movie idea would have been an absolute success if it wasn't for the a lot of hassle from the higher above... I love this video thank you..

that's because the stories that were told in the comics and animated movies and series were pure greatness, that it didn't matter if the artist was shitty or if the animation is shitty because the story was superb. it's hard to adapt that greatness into films. the marvel studios did great in that regard because in my opinion their stories were easier to adapt because they weren't as great as dc's

Next, you’ll be telling me that Nick Fury was a world war 2 veteran and Bucky was a twelve year old during that same war in the comics! Really, they are but or miss, regarding respecting the source. They had Capt..America embarrassed by his comics accurate costume in the first movie- I mean, sure , it looks corny and dated as fuck now, but not to him. Plus, in civil war, Cap went a tear to rescue a known mass murderer who was suspect in a bombing from the law. In civil war. Why the fuck would anyone think that’s in character. I mean they could have found some angle to make that work- but they didn’t bother

I liked Justice League and think it would have been something really special had the not fired Snyder but honestly this version sounds excellent but would have failed for there being no build up or origin. Comics fans would have loved it I think but casual fans would be confused only knowing who a few of the characters are.

The script sounds amazing but I agree that it would be far too much for a single film and too soon in a franchise. Keep it mostly the same but build up to it over the span of 3 solo establishing films and maybe 1 first meeting/team up films between Bruce and Clark (World’s Finest) then boom drop this movie. Except it’s the 1st time Clark and Bruce are teaming up with the wider DC universe heroes. Spread it over two movies culminating in the official establishment of the Justice League in the second film and call it simply “Dawn of Justice”.

Honestly, I was getting pretty disappointed with another "Superman brainwashed" story, until the time travel came into effect. This is a really cool story, though bit too convoluted to start the franchise. Also, Batman and Diana forming a relationship is DCAU fanboy's dream come true.

Errr ambitious indeed. That's a lot of concepts to introduce. The Green Lantern Corps, the presence of New Gods, time travel, the League already being a thing even though metahumans are still relatively new... I can see why it was thrown out. Also using Darkseid as the main villain to overcome kind of feels like blowing their load too early.

@@Addyson1991 no, what i needed was a Justice League movie that wasn't dogshit. A single song from the trailers that wasn't even in there was better then the entire soundtrack. The cgi looked like vomit. And any character consistency is thrown out the window. Have you noticed how in the behind-the-scenes look in the home release are of scenes that weren't even in the movie. I will watch every single DCEU movie no matter whose directing a 100 times over before i ever watch that flaming pile of garbage again.

I liked the script it was similar in ways that the characters knew each other. At the same time the flash dies. It was similar to batman v superman as the batman wears the suit to fight superman( his friend). It was inferior to the mortal movie of the justice league but I would have love to have seen it.

Always believed that you could do a movie with established dc characters for the simple fact that dc has some of the most iconic and recognizable characters in pop culture history. Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman are arguably the most referenced and understood characters by just about any audience. I posit that it probably took more work to make iron man a plausible concept to digest for general audiences than that of the characterization of Batman. What they should of done is have an epic two part justice league movie first. Then do a bunch of self contained three part movies of each hero afterwards with cameos and even introductions of new heroes and villains throughout. Then within those self contained movies you can hint and add little clues here and there towards the next big threat that would require the justice league to come together for another team up. Start on a powerful note then in the middle play a nice even tempered melody then end on the big note. The self contained movies will keep the franchise going while adding fresh elements periodically. To keep things interesting, then you end those set of movies with something dramatic like the death of Superman or Bruce hanging up the cape and cowl or wonder woman sacrificing herself. Because by this point you as the audience are heavily invested in these characters. And you want to see how the story concludes.

The Beale script sounds stupendous! I wish such an approach had been adopted by WB. It is similar to the approach Marvel has been using--that is, adapting the stories of the heroes catalogues of stories. In contrast, DC has pretty much wasted or bastardized the heroes stories. With WW they nuked EVERYTHING and actually started with the far less iconic 52 origin and on top of that killed off the Pantheon and removed tge Amazons entirely. This effectively jettisons her ENTIRE catalogue of stories for adaptation. After you watch the WW sequel let me know how much faith you have in their approach

While this sounds better than what we got this sounds more like Justice League 2 or 3 rather than a first film. It's too complicated for a first film; especially with none of the characters established, and the Justice League already formed. I wonder if they planned on reusing these plans for a sequel since a lot of elements sound similar to what Snyder had planned.

I think it's interesting how portions of the Miller film, and the Beall film are present in BvS so it was clear what Snyder and or WB wanted the film to include, or at least aspects they liked. Hopefully we see a Justice League film soon. We'll these plots are certainly interesting...maybe a Legion of Doom would be best for now since a roster of villains are already available.

As someone who loves the DCEU, Man of Steel and Batman v Superman the Ultimate Cut I absolutely disliked Justice League. I've only seen it once and I remember in my theatre at the end of the film everyone was so silent and disappointed after what they saw and I was disappointed too. JL actually made me lose hope for the DCEU but I am hoping that maybe in the future WB's will get it right again.

I wouldn’t make a CONTEMPORARY Superman movie. I’d just make it a period piece. You do a version of THE NEW FRONTIER, but you have JOHN STEWART as Green Lantern. Now THAT sounds like a movie with something to say.

Add in Martian Manhunter and Wonder Woman being a WOMAN in the ‘50s, and you’ve got a VERY interesting take on JLA.

For a DCEU to work you need Superman to start it off. Have him growing up watching Batman and seeing the mess Batman leaving fighting crime. He wants to be a perfect Hero. Get creative, give us a Superman vs Joker movie they in the same universe. Let that bring older Batman back because Superman can't do it alone. Slowly add the other in and this movie idea would be great for a Justice League 3.

for riggidy-real, this is such a really solid sounding Justice league story. like legit I think its streets ahead of the George miller version ( all honesty haven't read either, just relying on the oral tradition on these) and I would honestly rather have payed a local community theatre actor to just tell me the story and act out the cool parts from the WB/weird whedon, justice league that we got. I remember liking it, cute little movie, when I saw it in theatres but I was also very pleasantly and responsibly abusing the hell out of my Norco prescription I had for a back injury that wasn't so bad anymore. don't do drugs kids, they make you laugh at ezra miller quips. saw it later on... yucka tash. also anyone get some very avengers (highlander?) endgame vibes off this this ally Mc beal script description? tl; DR don't do opioids, They make Ezra Miller tolerable.

Here here. I grew up on the DCAU and for me John Stewart was the Green Lantern. So the fact we would’ve gotten John Stewart sounds awesome. Let’s hope they make one. Because he is cool.

He is loved by most mainstream viewers who's introduction to the DC universe was the Justice League animated series. And he's now the leader of the Green Lantern Corps in the comics. If anything, its Kyle Rayner who doesn't get enough love and attention.

plot sounds good but hard to fit into runtime - the fact alone that it has Batman attack Superman cause Superman is brain washed, rather than simply *murdering him for being kryptonian* is a big improvement over the core aspects of BvS that make it a travesty

It would have been a Signature Snyder piece of plagiarism where he steals great works from Reign of Superman, Injustice, Superman Lives and the first Apocalypse Invasion- crammed into one movie but stripped of their original backstory and emotional content. How can diluting all of these epic stories into a couple of hours possibly be a good idea? The first alien invasion since Steppenwolf 5000 years ago should be treated with reverence and for the purpose of cinematic world building. Instead, Snyder is too eager to cram in some angry Superman Injustice moments for fan service. Just because he can pat himself on the back for cleverly hobbling together a buffet of Chinese, Russia, Cold cuts, pickles, and nachos cheese on a single dish does not a good meal make. Snyder’s work is better as a DC 8k moving piece of wall art I appreciate his passion and some of his visceral style, but he should stick to commercials
