I feel very scared for the customization, they specifically said "hero" and not "class". Plenty of hero based games have less unique customization, like you get a skin rather than crafting your own outfit. Hero based games also give the feeling of "I'm playing THIS character with defined lore and personality and voice lines" rather than playing your own character with your crafted playstyle and your own imagined personality. Hero based games also have the problem of "Oh I enjoy the gameplay but I hate the character". I'm just hoping the hero based version is backpedaled or it was a misunderstanding but I imagine I'll be sorely disappointed.

Instead of cancelling it, make it into a single player game. It would be such a waste to reboot the Marathon series, just to turn it into just a multiplayer only game. What happened to releasing games with both? We used to almost akways get a campaign and a multiplayer
If I remember correctly, Marathon’s story-telling was far more implicit than it was direct, which adds to the mystery of the game. From what I’m getting at with how the devs are describing it, it seems that Bungie can definitely pull that off in a multiplayer PvP extraction shooter, so long as they do it right (which it sounds like they are, at least from what we know so far)
It's funny cause while the art seems kind of reminiscent of some of the durandal load screens (the dark screenshot with the two snipers), just with more neon colors, them calling it "beautiful" just to then be immediately juxtaposed by some of the most horrendous color combinations in that locker room screenshot was funny. It's like textureless Cruelty Squad. Been listening to Jake's videos and the story setup sounds really cool, though.
Bro I sure hope they release it. I have never seen better looking art direction in a video game, ever. I feel like we'ved reached the peak honestly. Provided this game actually releases of course. Although a hero shooter would be pretty disapointing.

As much as I love Marathon, I have to agree. It would somehow sting even more if it came out, after hoping for a sequel or reboot for like 15 years, and I just have no interest in playing it. I really hope whatever the original intent stays, and the hero shooter rumors are just that

It’s not unusual for Bungie to throw out an entire body of work, or a concept entirely. in favor of a reboot. They’ve done it several times in the past, and it looks like they’re doing it again. The original halo games that they were at the Helm of had more than a few references to Marathon within them. Almost leaving people to believe: that halo and marathon took place in the same universe, now that 343 has the franchise that’s clearly not the case. Troubled development going on here to be sure..
Yea I remember reading the terminals in h2 with all the marathon stuff back in the day. It was so crazy. Hoping Bungie can hit the jackpot again. If not with marathon with another space opera like halo (but not halo.)
When I think extraction shooter I think of getting extraction camped. The feeling of just having wasted my time and losing all desire to continue playing. I hope they pivot away from that whole concept.
I doubt it considering they probably put a lot of money in this project for it to be their potentially second big hit live service game like destiny 2 and they probably already put a lots of time considering the trailer came out in 2023, May 24 and is planning on release for 2025 so They probably been cooking this game for a while they also did hit big with the final shades, so yeah And christopher barrett, even though he was replaced, he new job is executive creative Director at bungie which pretty sure that means his creative vision is valued even more then when he was just a Director which I’m pretty sure he’s probably still gonna help with marathon
I say a lot of this in the video, I hope to hear something later this summer. I think a December 2024 release is perfect! 30-year anniversary of the release of the OG Marathon.
I think you are right with the template style characters. You can find 4 type of biomata model in the ARG Bungie posted. Each of them have some distinction from other.

Amazing video btw as a hunt showdown player who sometimes dabbled in d2 and never really even heard of marathon im excited for this game i like the way you talked about the hero concept it could mean so many things it could be false or it could just be templates like hunt but maybe with more customization. Since I missed out on the entirely of d2 I was hoping this game could be a fresh start im rambling but this video is good :3
No worries. There is another hero shooter Bungie was supposed to be making called Matter. It seems like there's no real certainty as to whether or not that's cancelled now.
Canceled? probably not . that a lot of money down the drain with 0 attempt at getting some back. Now if all the behind the scene rumors are true and Sony doesn't want the game, Bungie management just wanna cut and run, and what ever Marathon Joe first dreamed being long forgot in the pursuit of market dominance. It more likely that the worse case sceniro and the game is a flop then what ever player base the game get will be squeezed for every last penny they have till the game is fully dead.
Sounds like corporate meddling strikes again. Sony, just like Microsoft, is trying to tell Bungie what they can do. Hopefully like with Halo, Bungie pushes back, because otherwise Sony gets full control over Bungie, and I don’t think anyone wants that either. Bungie needs this game to be a runaway success if they want to have any hope of maintaining their identity
If I was Bungie, I would insert some sort of extraction mode into Destiny 2 in the next few months/asap to test out an already large existing player base to gauge impressions, etc. I would also add PvE to Marathon since that's their meat & potatoes player base, as I just found out from that one friend that plays Tarkov that they also have both PvP and PvE modes. I would definitely play Marathon if the game had PvE and exploration/quests/secrets.
I agree 100% with having a pve and pvp mode. Bungie innovated so much with halo back in the day and with destiny. While they are a very different studio I am still hoping for that magic. I was really hoping to see something before the end of this year, with the recent rumours I am not sure we will sadly.
this game looks really dope, but I hope the movement is nothing like destiny/halo/valorant. Those games are so floaty and slow, the acceleration not being faster feels really bad. Also it being a sony title, aim assist will probably be disgustingly strong so thats not great. Best artsyle ive ever seen. As an overwatch player, the hero shooter thing is slightly disappointing unless they do it really well, we don't really know much about it yet so hard to say.
hey so uhh.. did you know that HERO + SHOOTER = HEROSHOOTER? game was originally gonna be a PvPvE Shooter. take the cool character customizations out, add heroes, and it becomes a HERO PvPvE Shooter. hell, knowing AAA, they gonna turn it into a boring ass PvP HERO SHOOTER like overwatch. even if it ain't boring, it will still not be as cool as the original vision. EVER. and even if they say it isn't, THEY STILL DIRECTLY REFERRED TO THE CHARACTERS AS. HEROES. but yeh sorry to nitpick your vid. it was a cool to one to watch :) oh yeah, i would also make the distinction that heroshooters and Class based shooters are different due to the shift in modern gaming and the way it differs. basically it comes down to this: if the characters have established names, facial features, voices ETC, then they are HEROES. think BF2042, TF2, Overwatch. classes are better in that you SHOULD be able to customize nearly everything about your character except for your starting abilities. Think older Battlefield's, the finals, Titanfall2. of course, there are some games that blur the line lol. but then they'd be classified as both.
Imo Bungie proved they can still make some good campaigns with The Final Shape and The Witch Queen. I wouldn't mind that at all. Halo was a big part of my childhood, so I would be totally on board.
If i cant customize my character in this game im going to flip. The art style is so good looking that being forced to choose a shitty character just coz they look better (to me) is my biggest hate in character based shooters.
Yea, I am hoping we can. Especially with the art style customization of your own biomata would be so sick! I do hope if it's a template/character there is still heavy customization, but I really like the customization that has gameplay implications. I hope they don't abandon that. It could be really sweet!
If there smart they do the bare minimum to get it out the door it's going to fail anyway it's PVP only and it would have to compete with COD Apex and Fortnite. Then get to work overhauling D2 and making a single player Destiny game like a monster hunter or just a real solid single player RPG set in the Destiny Universe i'd love a game like that.
Personally, not a huge fan of monster hunter. If they took it and made a helldivers type game with destiny/marathon whatever game made sense could be fun. They did great with firefight back in the halo days, so maybe I would be interested in more pve stuff. If they did a story mode I could see marathon being halo mixed with dead space and freaking awesome!
We're yet to see a big AAA studio ti make a good extraction shooter. So far they have failed. It's like they have no understanding of the genre or focus on a very broad audience.
I agree, I initially thought Bungie could do a good job, they have a history of innovating and changing the landscape of gaming with halo and destiny. Now.... so much has come out recently I worry it might actually get canned.
I’ll play it regardless. Sony will support it. I think Sony will take over a PvE only Destiny and the Crucible will sacrificed for Marathon. If it is a hero shooter, Bungie will just come up with another name or term for it. I’m excited for it. I hope my internet is faster/better when it comes out. Cheers
just gonna say it.... again. Remake the campaign either as a Halo like experience but well Marathon, or do it like a System Shock remake like experience. IF it becomes successful THEN you make your extraction shooter Destiny ripoff game.
@@lonerjb I meant to say : with hero's it feels like you are playing a persona and you are really not your self. In Bungies previous games they emphasized on the player being the main character and the one who changes the story. Being able to pick traits that my character has would be awesome however I do not want to play a game where I stuck playing as a character I do not want to play.
I agree for destiny, not so much Halo. But yea I get where you are coming from. I was honestly hoping they would say something about marathon for bungie day, but the only news I saw was Christopher Barret left the company. So who the heck knows what we will get at this point.
So, is nobody going to address how Woke this looks? I have seen nothing but female characters front and center in all of the concept art and trailer. This does not bode well for the game.
