CT scanning has really leveled up in a very short period of time in just a few weeks it went from this is impossible to people now offering the service for a few dollars.

Goldin uses the tech right now to authenticate sealed items. On the streaming series they used it on first gen iphone to validate that an actual iphone was in the sealed package and actually found one item that was re-sealed.

Since a CT Scanner uses X-rays. Maybe each box moving forward could have a radiation sensitive label/sticker that will change color to Red if the box/case has been exposed to that type of radiation? That way there's a literal red flag to show that the box has/hasn't been scanned.

Not a bad idea, and radiation tamper stickers are cheap.

Card clearning is easy to pick up with some relatively inexpensive X-ray Flourescence systems (my students and I are working on a paper to publish, needs more experiments to show more confidence but early indication says very identifiable). For CT/Radiography, the high-end boxes like Flawless, NT, Diamond Icons, The Cup will be much more suspect to this technique (only a few cards in known fixed positions, with the best cards in specific positions in the box). Boxes like Bowman, Topps Flagship, full boxes of Pokemon will be more difficult unless one uses more specialized systems. From I have seen, the people doing this are using amateur image reconstruction methods (hence why they say they are having challenges with card that have different orientations). And the scanning in large stacks will lead to wild variations in x-ray attenuation which is statistically make the image interpretation of individual cards extraordinarily difficult. As for the lead/heavy metal option, if I can do the imaging through thin sheets in my lab, so can they. What might be able to deter this would be to use a special radiochromic film that changes color when exposed to enough radiation. These exist, but I am not sure about their applicability to this specific case. Finally, from an operations perspective, it "costs" roughly the same for a single scan of an object (maybe just requiring more time, but there's still setup and breakdown time). Thus, it would be very profitable for them to get this to work for boxes and cases where they can scan through stacks upon stacks of cards. I have a feeling a ton of people are going to get fleeced out of a lot of money.

Regarding the card cleaning identification, would you be able to identify it through a PSA slab (without taking the card out of the slab), or Beckett slab where the card is additionally in the sleeve?
@TheProfessorsDugout
@TheProfessorsDugout Месяц назад
Excellent question. It would need to be studied, but I would argue that the answer would be yes although it would add an additional layer of complexity to the analysis. How my students have looked at it in my lab so far was to scan the same card surface both pre and post-cleaning and look over any statistical difference in the analyzed x-rays that fluoresce off the suface of the card. The process with a graded card should be similar, and not excessively different for how we look for corrosion under layered surfaces for other materials.
@padwin
@padwin Месяц назад
@@TheProfessorsDugout cool. The sooner collectors have a way to tell if the card inside a slab has been cleaned (and thus potentially close to worthless) or not the better.

I've been screaming this for the last 3-4 months. Thr technology is already there. CGS has already used XRF spectometry to detect a fake test charizard and this was 2 years ago. Spectroscopy either XRF, IF, Mass, Raman can all be tweaked to detect
@TheProfessorsDugout
@TheProfessorsDugout Месяц назад
Excellent thinking. Yes, XRF systems are relatively common and easy to use. And I love the idea of combining it with Raman spectroscopy since that technique can give you chemical compound structure information that compliments XRF. I would hesitate usiin mass spect since ultimately that technique is destructive (atomizes the material).

I'm a CT Tech, I'm going to put a blaster pack of Topps series 2 in there and see what I get LOL. Most new scanners are really good at reducing metallic artifact via FBP and applying different kernels. I'm sure that if you had a dense enough metal sheeting completely surrounding the cards that it would make it more difficult, but I couldn't tell you the amount or type of material needed to make it foolproof without testing it. Send me a box of Flawless and I'll check for ya LOL

@@BatteryNotRequiredthat’s a great idea
@hoffvandamme5295
@hoffvandamme5295 Месяц назад
@BatteryNotRequired CT uses ionized radiation, so you could possibly add a sticker that reacts to radiation when exposed. But it comes down to costs and whether companies care enough to implement it. Anyone can build a spectroscopy unit that could detect cleaning and alteration, but its whether they want to.
@macstener5295
@macstener5295 Месяц назад
@@hoffvandamme5295 then I suppose they’d cover the sticker in lead and scan and then it wouldn’t activate it? Maybe? And the whole card cleaning thing may be kind of difficult. That Kurt’s card care solution stuff, if you use wipe it down after and really clean it off, is it going to live a detectible residue? I think that one may be difficult unless they leave traces. But I think effectively they are buffing out scratches and after you can probably wipe that stuff clean off and your result would still be there. I could be off but that’s kind of what I’m assuming.
@hoffvandamme5295
@hoffvandamme5295 Месяц назад
@@macstener5295it should still activate it, unless it's been placed in a lead container. The whole card care has been done to death. But let's put it this was way. If you add any sort of chemical, compound etc you can wipe as much as you like it will still leave a residue at a molecular level. Spectroscopy ( IR, Raman, Mass, XRF etc) is the same technology used in the military, police, air port security, archeology and the Art world. It detects foreign chemicals at a molecular level. CGC have already used XRF spectometry to detect a fake charizard

The companies need to add some type of metal into the boxes to help shield the contents. A nice piece of lead will throw off enough artifact to make a CT scan pretty moot. That won't help boxes already on the market unfortunately.

The amount of Press about CT scanning makes me think it is an inside job(4D chess) by Fanatics/topps to build this story, so people are basically forced to buy product from Fanatics/topps websites "safely". Wouldn't be hard for Rubin's cronies to set this up to be Hobby-wide news. Either way this is great news for Fanatics direct to consumer sales and way to take business from Whatnot.

Very interesting insight. Yes, it could be used by BBCE but like you said why trust them to use for good? I have said for years that the tech is there if you have the money. We can read the SEALED dead sea scrolls so a box of cards isn't impossible. Lots of talk, but IMO the hobby doesn't care. Sadly, I don't think much will change in regards to old wax. Lots of trust circles will be tested. They fake iPhone on the Golden show caught my attention. I think the future is NFTs. Not like Top Shot, but as a redemption that you can request physical cards every month like a subscription services or redeem with your grading company for a slabbed card or just resell the NFT on the marketplace. NFTs (they will rebrand the name) are they best tech for the future of the hobby. Blockchain visibility and security. Growth is with future chasers and fanatics, and the cards will trickle down in the hobby.

These shysters will probably see a sealed box with a huge card in it and replace it with one that doesn't. It would be hard for their customer to tell if they don't get their original sealed box back. I also can't imagine this being all that lucrative. It's not like there are huge cards in every other box. You would have to scan hundreds of bowman boxes to get the Ohtani auto. People being able to know there is nothing good in the box so they sell it is probably the real threat. Cold boxes everywhere.

The "gambling" aspect of ripping wax is what fuels it for a lot of people. Call it what you want but buying wax and ripping comes down to the basic feeling of did you "hit" or not. Not being negative just calling it what it is, ripping in some ways is gambling. Take that aspect away and it will kill the hobby, wax will be dead and it will just be breaks and repacks, maybe just what they want.
