Guys, the reason for the whole dog death storyline is to show the actual depth of Sam's sympathy -- which he quickly turns off when he's working at the investment bank. In that scene, you watch him tearfully mourn his pet before walking into a room in a matter of seconds, projecting smug confidence and optimism. We, the audience, know it's a performance, but showing his transition shows you something about the bank -- it's a culture that teaches its people to ignore their sympathies and sentimentalities. Their co-workers, now without jobs, are "not to be thought of again." He tells them "you were better." Well, not necessarily. We know for a fact that's not the only reason they're firing people. It's a culture that teaches people that other people's tragedies are YOUR opportunities. It teaches them that everything they've been through that day is GOOD THING as long as they're still standing at the end of it. It's a delusional, self-centered culture, however necessary. And the guys at the top who sell the delusion know better.

Yes, this. Seriously, I've long thought that the big takeaway from this movie was that there aren't any heroes in these kinds of situations. Everyone's flawed, compromised, and/or too small a participant in too large a machine. Eric Dale identifies the problem but is laid off before he can do anything about it, Peter brings Eric's work to light but is too low on the ladder to do anything more than that, Sam and Will are taken aback at the implications of the deal but still stay and take the money, etc. The CEO even calls Sam out on his hypocrisy at the end; he's getting all high and mighty when he's been making cutthroat trades for decades that've put people out of work or crushed their whole businesses. And as you say, he pisses and moans about his dog but it didn't occur to him once to reach out to his son-even after Peter brings it up, we find out Sam wasn't even aware of how his son did the whole day until he's burying the dog at night and speaks with his ex-wife. He STILL hadn't checked in.

Not really, if you watch The Big Short Movie, you will know what really saved them was government bailouts, then they use part of the bailout money to leverage the government and stopped big reforms in the financial sector. They are smart pieces of shit, they know some banks will die if their connection to the government is not deep enough, and they know their action will leave millions of people homeless, but they don't give a shit. Having someone like Eric Dale just means they can lose less money by pulling out a bit early, but they still lost a lot, still, they expect the government to save them because they have 100 years of connection within the government sector. In the end, taxpayers and normal people paid for everything, the government printed trillions of dollars to save the financial sector, and the inflation skyrocketed, while the market and economy breaks.

I know some view the dog as a metaphor, but to make a literal observation: imagine what a nightmare it would have been to carry out this plan WHILE worrying about your sick, dying dog. Maybe he put it out of mind considering the gravity of the situation, but maybe not, as they've shown Sam to be deeply affected by it in at least a few scenes. Anyone who is an animal lover and who's gone through the same thing probably knows the terrible experience of getting through a work day with that weighing on your mind. I couldn't concentrate or be useful, and just had to take the day. Then again, these guys are high end Wall Street employees and my guess is they've had to shut off or surpress their emotions more than once as part of the gig.

Long gone was my crew, some I had worked with for 10 years, all of them went into the unemployment line. Nearly all those executives above me long gone as as they found jobs elsewhere. Like me the ones left were given an additional 4 to 6 months severance pay, paid off for sick leave not used (an additional 6 weeks), 8% annual interest on my retirement account besides my 401K, and anywhere from $5k to $10k for staying to the very end. Not a golden parachute as all higher up got even more. Took me 4 months to find another job paying me 30% less and very few benefits. Film is all about financial corruption. It’s one thing to brand your product as AAA (very safe mortgages in this case) and believe it - a whole ‘nother $@#& sandwich when you know they are anything but. The basis of game theory, of capitalism, of society is making a fair deal. There are winners, losers & everything in between. But lying, cheating, swindling does not sustain anything of value for long.

As in the Wire, the game is the game. Only the players and environments change. It doesn’t matter if we’re good or evil - unless we are born very financially lucky, we must play.

This movie should be used as a case study at higher levels of finance education and film study. It's astounding to me that this remains a hidden gem after all these years.

Yep, surprisingly there is one thing in common with hardline communism and pure capitalism... complete disregard for individual people.
