"Disney has come up with some original attractions that have flopped" *superstar limo fades in the background* 😂
@mckenziemillar

There seems to be an "original ride" in every land (frontierland-thunder mountain, fantasyland-matterhorn) so I feel like it would be harder to come up with a new original idea that you can fit in a land that isn't too similar to the existing original ride. Maybe my rambling doesn't make sense but that's just what I think
@Disneylander
@Disneylander 4 года назад
That totally makes sense! It's not always the case, but it does seem like the themeing for a land is often grounded in one central original attraction.

In November 2021 I picked up two Disney board games: one based on Pirates of the Caribbean, and one based on Jungle Cruise. Both were based more on movie franchises and the Pirates game was based on the old Battleship game.

I think Disney will some day make another original ride, however I think it will be whenever they make a new park. Either a 3rd gate at DL or 5th gate at WDW. I don't think any original rides will be going into any existing park, I'd love to be proven wrong though :D

That's a good point!!! Lots of new original ride ideas seem to be built in brand new parks.

Disney doesn't just add IP rides for money, they add them to their parks because it draws attention to some star wars or marvel fans or fans of other Disney characters. That just want to come to Disneyland or any Disney park for the sake of seeing these rides or IPs in person. 'Cause that's what Disney is about to let your fantasies, your imaginations come to life. An original ride is hard to come up with since we're now living in a new era.

I honestly think that all the true original ideas for new rides with that DISNEY MAGIC died with Walt Disney himself. I mean like rides in Disneyland or Disneyworld. Excluding all other Disney parks.
@Disneylander
@Disneylander 4 года назад
That seems largely true, but then again, it's not like Walt was opposed to rides being based off of movies! Several of the opening day attractions were IP-based.

If we are being logical I think the next time we will see non-IP-based rides is in a nudist park but not just a new Disney park in Walt Disney World which is most likely to get the next Disney park because it has the space and time to do it I feel that Disneyland won’t get a new IP because it just doesn’t make sense to use space for a non-IP attraction I think they can use all the space to put as much Disney into Disneyland as possible and put all the mini of the non-IP‘s in that new Walt Disney World park I don’t even see you Disneyland getting a new part anytime soon They might get a waterpark if they can somehow find space ,but that’s really it..

Disney should do that western river expedition ride over in disneyworld magic kingdom to replace splash mountain instead of princess and the frog. Their splash is in frontierland right? So i think it would be a good fit.

My guess is no for 2 reasons: 1) Money. Rides now are so expensive to make that Disney execs won’t sign off on something that doesn’t guarantee a big return on the investment regardless of what has worked in the past or their “faith” in the imagineers. It’s just too risky. 2) It is hard to find truly original ride ideas anymore. Hollywood keeps rehashing the same stuff and a lot of original ideas don’t do well at the box office anyway. As a counterpoint, if Disney or Pixar comes up with a successful and entertaining movie and a ride is based off of it (i.e. Inside Out or Wreck it Ralph) why is that such an issue? The IP was original and creative and Disney owns it so why would making an attraction off of an original movie idea be such a bad thing. The idea is still original, whether it was used as a movie first or not. Just my 2 cents:) Keep up the great Podcasts!!!
@Disneylander
@Disneylander 4 года назад
Definitely two really really good points! Money is absolutely the main reason, and I think it's also the reason we see a lot of original rides right when a new Disney park opened up, but why new rides are rarely "originals". DCA, Hong Kong, Shanghai, etc, all opened up with lots of non-IP rides, as a new park will draw visitors regardless of if the rides are based off of movies, whereas a new ride in an existing park draws more visitors if it's based off of something people already love. And your second point makes sense too: originality of ideas can come from the movie studios rather than the parks and it still counts. Thanks a bunch, though!

I'm going to be optimistic. Maybe we're on the verge of something original. Imagineers probably have a ton of ideas that they haven't been allowed to explore. I hope we are at the end of franchises for a while. Hopefully Marvel starts not doing so well, same with Star Wars. (This coming from a guy who built a life size Darth Vader). I'm really sick of everything. Covid is definitely going to change things. Maybe it will be time for them to take a chance.
@Elfan4
@Elfan4 4 года назад
I hope they do!!! This is a topic that touches a nerve, because the only answer I can come up with is this: Imagineers have lost their imagination. "Journey into (your) imagination" should be a ride about what they're lacking. Let's be honest, the best rides are the original ones. I don't know about you, but I hate it when they change an original ride and put elements from the films. Personally, the only 2 IP rides that were worth it are Indiana Jones and Cars, but the others are just average quick re-dos. Also, Walt did come up with most of the ideas, and there was only 1 Walt 😅😅

This is really interesting, I’ve never really bought about it. I hope there never comes a day where all the original rides become re-themed around a movie. I like the dark rides being based on the movies of course, and I’m glad Cars Land was themed after the movie rather than the original idea of just regular cars - but I think there is something really special about the original idea rides you talked about in this video and it would be nice to keep them as they are. Just my opinion :) thanks for another great video!

They won’t, they have learned that IP based rides do better in the park, example: thunder mountain was amazing back then, it still is. But rise of the resistance is doing better than most of non-IP based rides.

I would love to see it but I feel like the answer is probably no. As much as many park enthusiasts and purists love original rides and will gladly buy park merch based off of og attractions, IP attractions are just so much more... *attractive* to park newcomers and Dis-nerds who are into the movies and IPs way more than they're loyal to the parks. If they put in any new original rides I would bet that they put it in Tomorrowland once they finally overhaul it, because it has the most room for improvement (I love Tomorrowland but it's sad right now) and the most room for creativity at this point (in my opinion). DCA has almost entirely been rebrand as an IP only park, with Paradise Pier becoming Pixar and Hollywood Backlot dying out, the Grizzly River area is the largest og section of that park left, and there's not much room for another attraction.
@Disneylander
@Disneylander 4 года назад
You're totally right about all of that! The original rides are incredible, but, at least in today's world, movie-based rides just get more visitors coming to the parks. And especially when they use everything from kids movies to more mature movies like Star Wars and Avatar and whatnot, it keeps all ages wanting to come back again and again.

I got the feeling that you were only focusing on the US parks, but if you expand your scope out to the foreign parks you would find some interesting original rides. Within my understanding, the newest original ride in ANY Disney park is Soaring: Fantastic Flight in Tokyo Disney Sea (Opened in July 2019). Sure the ride itself is a clone of Soaring around the World but is themed around one of the SEA members with a wooden flying machine. If you consider SEA to be an IP then Soaring is out, but they are their own thing within the parks and don't really have a presence out of the parks. Not really like any other Disney IP.
@Disneylander
@Disneylander 4 года назад
Yeah, my eyes were definitely on the US parks for this one. The overseas parks definitely continue to roll out amazing new rides, especially Disney Tokyo. But Tokyo's parks aren't operated by Disney themselves, and I feel like the cultures in other countries allow for more original ideas to be successful...the American audience seems to only be interested in rides based off of movies, haha. Not that that's a bad thing, but still.
@Pantheragem
@Pantheragem 3 года назад
@@Disneylander I don't think the American audiences would know they liked an original ride until it was there in front of them. It could be a sleeper hit. It's odd, that an updated Adventures Through Innerspace or People Mover would probably blow minds. Especially in the U.S. we're so used to everything being a franchise, that anything original is shocking. American audiences are treated so "safely", it's ridiculous. Growing up in the 80's, I must say, was fantastic. There were so many new and original ideas in the form of movies. Or even if they weren't, they were presented in a way never seen before (Ahem, George Lucas). It's sad what happened. By comparison, Eisner was a creative genius compared to Iger. I never thought I'd see Disney become so aggravatingly safe. This is the company that made every movie of the 80's that actually scared me.

first off excellent outro my friend. now as for the question the answer is probably yes but not for awhile (technically the skyride at WDW is the newest non IP ride though and it's pretty damn new). The biggest problem is that a lot of the newer attempts at non IP rides and stuff have been met with a rather lukewarm response. DCA is still struggling to find itself as an all day experience but has been boosted by its IP additions since its original opening as a non IP park. But I think DCA's real problems weren't so much the lack of IP attachment but more the lack of any sense really of the theming one expects from a Disney park which is probably why the Grizzly Peak area is the only part of the park thats largely similar to opening day still. If tomorrowland ever gets its major overhaul at Disneyland that is the most likely area where a new non IP attraction will come in but that is probably pushed further into the future now... WDW is more likely to get new non IP attractions sooner as they have space to expand or open another park etc. anyway another great video I give it 5 out of 5 Triscuit crackers ;)

Ayden’s Football Talk unfortunately Disney Imagineering culture isn’t the same. I remember they came to talk during my freshmen year in college and the rides division is mostly project management from what it sounds like; much of the actual design work is contracted out. Unfortunately, in that kind of an environment, it will be hard to break through like a Davis or Baxter. I do think most of the original nonIP stuff is likely to come from foreign parks if it is done at all.
