I go to the range all the time and hit off mats , it’s like an addiction bc I have one so close to my house . It is very counterproductive because it never feels the same on the course and for me the biggest difference is addressing the ball and the take away . On the mat you can slide the club around and it can just glide back at take away , on a course the club head does not slide at all and it’s a totally different feel from the get go which changes everything , frustrating!

Not trying to start a debate but couple of those problems can be easily solved. Towel or tape 1inch behind ball to show you when you fat a shot. Buy many rubber tees of all sizes (not expensive) and bring your usual tee to get the right height and vwala

I agree 100%. Mats are fine for loosening up before a round but otherwise counterproductive.

I agree with the comments, especially the injury aspect of the video. I had really bad tennis elbow and sore wrist every time I used the mat.

Mats will certainly have the effect, especially if there is already an existing injury!

@@ScratchGolfTips I think it was a combination of too heavy swing weight of my previous irons and hitting down too much on the floor and mat. I’ve avoided mats now.

Try swinging the club properly. 😂

Found this video and agree after a full year of practicing in my basement with the Mevo+ Simulator. How should I improve during the MI Winter months - Use a real tee into the mat and driver only?
@ScratchGolfTips
@ScratchGolfTips Год назад
You can certainly try to put a tee into the mat, but that can be tricky. I also wouldn't say to only hit your driver, if you're just keeping your feel and maintaining your fundamentals, you can certainly keep hitting irons and wedges during the winter!

Very good video. It is very humbling when you stripe every club on the range off a mat, then lay the sod over your irons on the course. Sometimes there is no choice and “not” hitting balls is sacrilege!!!!! Just be mindful.

Agreed that sometimes there is no choice, but understanding how mats effect your shots is important! Thank you for watching.

I think they’re great for drivers if you have a range that has interchangeable tees, I prefer the “medium” ones but it helped my iron game overall. Except for the fact that it’s a perfect shot everytime. In short, if you play golf where you give urself a better lie, I think they can help. But overall, grass is always preferred. Side note. I haven’t really ran into a huge problem with staining, and tbh all it really is, is staining, big whoop

Sadly in the uk at most courses this is the only option we have 😢

Any recommendations on practicing if there are no ranges with grass hitting areas near me?
@ScratchGolfTips
@ScratchGolfTips Год назад
That's always a great time to focus on putting. If you have a putting mat you can really work on your stroke fundamentals and feel, and while not exactly like an actual green, putting mats are pretty close!

We have driving mats in our area that have Matt’s that are slanted downward. This is totally backwards to me because I see so many golfers sculling their shots, banging protectors bear other golfers. You are supposed to learn hitting down on the ball and the mats should be flat or slanted slightly upward to promote this. It’s the best way to learn to hit down on your irons. This place called Carl’s Golfland has it completely backwards. I think they’re trying to save mats not help golfers.

Unfortunately, many of these mats are very counterproductive and clubs don’t care to fix them…

That’s not always true at 2:15 - my range has mats, which they recently installed, that have slots to put in your own tee to adjust height.

Agreed - my local driving range has mats that allow me to swap out rubber tees of various heights with no problems.

Matt’s hits must be judge on sound. If you hit the click before the Mat then it’s a good hit that probably do good on ground . If your first here the mat and then the click it’s a bad one.

Imo mats are just fine for fairway woods, long irons and hybrids. Don’t bring wedges or shorter irons to the mats.
@ScratchGolfTips
@ScratchGolfTips 2 года назад
Good point, compared to short irons and wedges, hybrids and long irons are not as effected by the hitting surface.

What's the point of indoor simulators? Why does everyone want one then?
@ScratchGolfTips
@ScratchGolfTips Год назад
The main benefit of indoor sims is convenience if an individual owns one, and for going out and renting a space for an hour, that's generally popular for those who can't golf year-round due to winter weather.

My club has just installed mats. Why ? Because of upkeep expense for the turf I guess. Florida grass grows back faster than your beard. STAY OFF MATS IF YOU VALUE YOUR WRISTS AND ELBOWS AS WELL AS TRUE BALL FLIGHT.!
@ScratchGolfTips
@ScratchGolfTips Год назад
Mats can be helpful if the driving range if too wet to hit off of, but aside from adverse conditions, they shouldn’t really be used. Thanks for watching!
