Welcome to the latest video in a series about our solar panel and battery installation in the south east of the UK.
Now that the daylight hours are getting longer and the sunlight stronger, will we continue to increase or Solar Energy utilisation? And are we getting close to our predicted 60% reduction in electricity import?

I have a fairly similar setup. E/W 6 panels on both roofs 4.8kw total. 9.6Kw batteries. Being on the E7 tariff I force charge the batteries overnight for 2 hours. And that is it for the day, cost averaging £1.30p a day. But like all houses, all have different people living in them. We are out most of the day with electricity usage being around 83watts during the day. Yes, we do get up to around the 4kw mark in the evening but that is mainly taken care of by the batteries. I'll be taking off the force charge once we get to the end of April. We might get by with no charge at the moment but given the weather, like today, maybe not.

Hi, thanks for the update. You’re videos has helped me spec my system a lot, so thank you. My system is moving along, the survey and quote is happening Saturday, we are having 15x425 panels, east roof only so facing about 080 degrees east. The 6kw Solis inverter and 2 x 3.5kw batteries. Expecting it give about 4800kwh per year, and cost about £9700 just waiting for quote. We may go for a 3rd battery in the future, going to see how we get on with 2 first. Smart meter fitted 2 weeks ago shows night time use from 5pm to 7am is average of 5kw currently including the washing machine and dishwasher that would move to the day time after panels fitted so the batteries should be more than ample.

Great News Kev. Glad the videos are helping - that was the purpose of starting them in the first place; to give people a view of my experience as part of their overall research into whether a move to Solar and Battery is viable!

I may join you with the videos, it’s great to share the experience, much better information than a sales person can give. You’ll have to watch out for ‘East Solar’ :) ha

I think you’ll be surprised just how much power your east array will make on a clear, sunny day. I only have 5x425 on the east, but on sunny mornings they’re pulling in more than 2kW. I have four more facing south and six facing west and I’m amazed how much I’m generating and the excess I’m exporting. I need to get on the smart export guarantee.

@@CastleKnight7 how well do your east facing panels do in the afternoon come say 3pm? Are they still making anything noteworthy on an average day in April?

Have you considered putting some wall mounted vertical panels on the south facing gable end?
@East2WestSolar
@East2WestSolar Год назад
Someone did suggest that last last year. I'd probably only get one at most on the gable end as the roof pitch is so shallow. Plus aesthetically I don't think it would look great, and hanging it on the render and brickwork would be problematic (the bricks are a nightmare to drill into and crack easily).

Thanks for sharing. I also have an East west split system with similar results to yours. I have started force charging my battery overnight in Feb and March, using an economy 7 tarrif. I stopped this in April due to more power coming in from Solar and the battery not needing it. Would you consider this for next winter or not?
@East2WestSolar
@East2WestSolar Год назад
Thank's Adrian. It's certainly possible, but it's remembering to get the changes done (I've only just got round to reducing the target temps on the central heating)!

what kind of level do the batteries get to as a peak, do they ever get close to being fully charged?
@East2WestSolar
@East2WestSolar Год назад
Hi Hudson Marine. The batteries do get fully charged. It depends on how much discharge takes place overnight. For example this morning I had 24% of the battery remaining, but as of now it is at 99% full and I've only taken a small amount from the grid (less than a kWh today). Once they get to 100% full (or the solar generation in kWh exceeds the level that can be sent to the batteries) then the excess goes to the grid.

Thanks for the video. Very informative as always. I was wondering how long it took you to get DNO approval and is your inverter limiting export to 3.65kwh?
@East2WestSolar
@East2WestSolar Год назад
Thank's Russell! So post installation I received a copy of my DNO approval from the installer on the 14th November, so about 3 weeks after the install. With regards to Inverter export limits, I don't appear to be limited to 3.65kwh. On the 4th April I exported over 18kWh and that peaked during the day at 3.824kWh, and on the 7th I exported 14.92 kWh and that export peaked at 4.383kWh.

Thanks for the reply. The installer submitted my paperwork to the DNO last week and I am told it may take up to 6weeks. Hopefully it will be as quick as yours! I got my solar (6.04kwh) and battery (14.4kwh) installed on 31 March so I am looking forward to next months video to compare my output to yours!! Since I am not getting paid for export I am trying to use as much energy as possible so the tumble dryer is being used a lot at the moment!!

Hi, very interesting. However cannot make sense of the slide at 7 mins. Questions, was grid import cost of £137.17 really for Jan or you meant Mar? Why are your unit costs so high, about 38p kwh? Do you not have dual tariffs? I would have thought with dual fuel tariffs your grid cost would be much lower, Thanks. FYI my 5.8kw array , generated 334k in March, 26kwh self use, battery used 164kwh, exported 155kwh. Import 262kwh consumed 440 kwh. I am interested in your results as I only have a 5kw battery and trying to decide whether to increase it.

Thank's Laurence! So the slide you mentioned has a typo on it (and I think I rerecorded the audio for that slide about 5 times and didn't spot it)! It should of course read March rather than January. So with regards my unit costs - I am with Octopus and my unit charge is 31.84p per kWh, and my standing charge is 35.52p per kWh on their flexible Octopus tariff, and I then have their agile outgoing tariff for export payments. At this moment in time, there is no real where I can get it any cheaper. Plus as we are just out of Winter I was expecting to pay more over the winter period. I don't get any discount as far as I am for having gas with them as well - as it's all on the standard rates.

I have looked at your figures and compared them to my own and something does not add up. Question, do you have dual tariff?
@East2WestSolar
@East2WestSolar Год назад
Hi Mike. Depends what you mean by dual tariff. I am on a dual fuel tariff through Octopus as they are also my mains gas supplier. But I suppose you can say I'm on a dual tariff for electric, as I am on Octopus Agile Outgoing, so I have a rate I pay for import, and a variable rate that I get paid for the export.
