In this video I see who wins the battle of Solar on the South and East facing roof and take you through a typical day from 5am to 6pm to see how much the East and South roof solar panels can produce. Is it worth putting solar panels on the East facing roof? Watch the video and find out!

Highly appreciated video and illustrations. I’m convinced this was one if not the best video example on Solar panel arrangement in relation to the Sun.

We have a 16 south, 10 east, 10 west. The east west array actually out performs the south array by about 1 or 2% as a proportion of the average yield per panel. However we also get steady power over the year. The early morning and late after yield is useful.
@dharmensoneji3360
@dharmensoneji3360 Год назад
How does the west facing array fare? I have only west possible. About to fit soon so hopefully it does yield a good amount.
@johnrush3596
@johnrush3596 Год назад
@@dharmensoneji3360 The west array averages about 80% the energy of a south array. Best option would be an east west array.

Hi Dan, I just had my installation, 15x425 panels and a solis 6kw hybrid Inv, panels are facing east; 080degrees, I made 35kwh so far today, mainly in the morning, it peaked at 6.4 kw around noon, my 9.6kwh battery was charged from 19% to 100% by 8am. I started making at 5am and had a steady 1kwh still at 4pm, slowly dropping off as the day goes on. I’m really pleased, I’ve not paid a penny all day and would have made £3 if export was set up but that will be 4-6 weeks I think.

Sounds good. It's a pain seeing the electric go out the door without getting paid, try and use it! But it shouldn't be too long hopefully.

Thank you for this very interesting video. Your east/south panel production ratio is close to 90% (302kwh/336kwh as you mentioned in the comments). We have a different system with Enphase microinverters however the east/south ratio is very similar at 89%, since the installation at the end of June. Let’s see how this will change during the winter.

Great videos Daniel, a real help. This one is very useful. What would be great is to show the data for an average non summer day and a rubbish day. Hope you have time. Dom
@daniel_coe
@daniel_coe Год назад
Great suggestion! We've had a rubbish day today in the East with only 8kWh. But I can't use that as we had a peak at 2 to 4pm so that makes the South panels look a lot better, so I need to look for a fairly symmetrical graph day.

Brilliant video thanks for taking the time to make it. My 4kw solar system faces south and next you iam going to fit on the east side of my gable end wall hopefully about 4kw of solar panels vertical on my wall. I have seen solar panels work great on the side walls of houses. 🤞
@daniel_coe
@daniel_coe Год назад
I've seen it too, I suppose you just need the wall space and a clear line of sight. It would be interesting to know how the angle of the panels (being flat) affects the performance compared to angled ones.
@WaxedMerkin
@WaxedMerkin Год назад
I assume its the same as Australia, in that its better to use the power generated than to export it to the grid. In that you will get lets say 6c per KW exported but pay 20c per KW imported. So placement of the panels is important
@KelpieKev
@KelpieKev Год назад
Nice video, i am currently contemplating an East only install of 20 x 425 panels. off of your demonstration, i would have 4000w at 8AM and 1400w at 6PM on that given day. That's great to know, so thank you for the informative video. This means we can get the dishwasher on and washing machine etc for free in the morning. 😆 I will be having an 8KW Inverter though to give me 8000watts of a max theoretical system output of 8500watts on the best of days.
@daniel_coe
@daniel_coe Год назад
That's sounds great and a nice system, as long as your local power network allows you to have such a big system. I can't see a problem with it.

I am planning a East/West System 10 x 400Wp each side. with 5KW inverter and 10KWh Battery. This gives me confidence that it is a good plan!

Hi Mark, I’ve just had installed 5.74kw solar system, I’ve got 14 x 410 watt panels, 4 panels on my east facing roof and 10 on my west facing roof, they was installed on 4th August this year and I’ve got a Solis 5kw inverter, I’m still waiting for my ac inverter and 7.2 kWh battery. I’ve seen 5.6kw of power being generated loads of times, I’m wondering if 20 panels would be too much for your inverter ? My system has generated as much as 36kwh in a Day during August, hope this helps you
@markbowyer2147
@markbowyer2147 Год назад
@@robhoulden This is something I have considered! I am planning a immersion heater controller and an EV charger. I would like sufficient generation in the winter too, and as the roof is large enough it makes sense to load it up. I welcome comments though.

Hi, thanks for effort ☺! Is the pitch the same? As your inverter is 4kW did you pay extra for G99?
@daniel_coe
@daniel_coe Год назад
The pitch is the same, i don't know if I paid more for G99, probably a little but it was not itemised separately on my invoice.

Interesting stuff. Panel watts over time is quite useful to help you think. It will be interesting to see this again in the winter. Will the sun get high enough in winter to make the east ones produce a reasonable amount of power. Been looking at getting solar and have a South West roof and a North East one. Only being told to do the one side of the roof. This is making me think about doing both. Will maximize generation in winter (with the basis of more surface) but will export lots in the summer. Need to work out the benefits of the generation saving in winter Vs the wasted (5/6p kWh) export in the summer.
@daniel_coe
@daniel_coe Год назад
There's a lot to think about. I guess you wouldn't get too much off a NE roof. You could do SW first. Tough one. I could do this test again in winter with shorter days and the sun being lower. Thanks

Hi, could you please tell us total kWh from 1 panel on the East and from 1 panel on the South, on that specific day? Thank You
@daniel_coe
@daniel_coe Год назад
I have tried, but the data is only available for a short while for the entire day and my example was in July. But since I had the panels installed on the 23rd March 2022 to 30th September 2022 (just over 6 months) a single panel on the South has generated 336kWh whereas a single East panel has generated 302kWh. Hope that helps.
