The Maverick reminds me of my old XJ Cherokee. Everything you need nothing you don't and it does a good all around job at most tasks. This is a back to the basic truck like how it should be.

I'd really like to see how a regular FX4 Maverick does on this test. Obviously it would have to take the hybrid route, but I wonder how the normal AWD system compares to the Tremor system.

I think it did great and was only limited by tires. Going through mud of that viscosity and climbing steep hard terrain like that is exactly why they make mud tires. Maxxis makes a Bighorn MT in 245/70r17. That tire fits FX4s without rubbing and would gain an extra 3/4" of ground clearance which would further boost its angles. Would have gripped the rocks(or is that funky poured concrete?) an slung through that mud with ease. People say MTs are too aggressive for this type of AWD but tires are for the terrain not the vehicle. Wanna race a Camry in a demo derby in mud put on mud tires. Wanna be a god in the snow in any vehicle put on snow tires. Wanna handle rainstorms on the highway put on tires with circumferential grooves.

nice review, the Maverick is a good all rounder, a real skid plate package offered from Ford would be great, I think the aftermarket will be the first to offer it, Living in Central Canada last winter we had our worst winter in over 110 yrs, i met a guy who had a Maverick FX4 and bought dedicated snow tires for it and he said it would push snow almost up to the bottom of the front grill before it would start to slow down and start to dig in, it never left him stranded in any snowy conditions and he was amazed how well it preformed on icy roads and said that was probably attributed to the dedicated snow tires and was pretty easy on fuel in the winter time and we regularly get -25 with windchills I'd like to buy one in a couple of years when the supply chain gets back into a better position than they are now and i refuse to pay more than sticker, i am familiar with how it works being a former employee of GM Canada 👍

I know it's no off road vehicle had jeep xj and wrangler and lifted 150. But bad on gas and how much did I use it for off road.. maverick tremor is a prefect overland vehicle for sure for going camping and moving around the land.. if I wanted a true off road vehicle yes ranger tremor would be the way to go for sure.

@@josephalbritton6509 I find that incredibly hard to believe. 24 MPG from a unibody truck on H/T's and a 4 cylinder? The only aerodynamic differences between the FX4 and the Tremor is a 0.8" lift and slightly different front bumper. In Eco Mode on the highway my girlfriend's brick-shaped Bronco Wildtrack Sasquatch with the 35" M/T's and the 2.7L V6 gets between 22 and 23 MPG. And that's running 75-80 on the highway.

Tremor pack does not kill the mileage, it’s a much better package for my needs and nicer looking too. I’d rather have the Tremor rear locking diff than a 4k tow pack

The limitation here was tire grip. A grippier tire and this would have ate that hill right up. As far as the front protection is concerned, if Ford does not do it, the aftermarket will come up with a tougher front skid plate. My configuration of choice would be the Maverick XL with the Tremor front bumper and tow hooks, a 4K tow package and the steel wheels with knobby tires. If I could select it, I would add the rear locker differential. But since you can only get the locker on the tremor, I think I would stick with an XL AWD and 4K tow package. But I will miss the front tow hooks and Tremor lower front bumper.

You can't get an XL with a Tremor package. It is for XLT and Lariat trims. IMO, the best configuration is an XLT FX4 with 4k TTow package. The tremor looses the ability to tow 4k.

@@davidalexispr Your correct. Cannot get tremor goodies on the XL. However, I have been wondering if the tremor front bumper can be bolted on in place of the stock curb sniffer lower bumper. For 2022, my preferred choice configuration was the XLT with the max tow and FX-4 package. But since Ford now includes the cruise control with the 2023 XL package, I no longer need the XLT package. And after consideration, I really don’t need the extra goodies of FX-4 package other than the front recovery hooks. I am not going to be doing any major off road exploring or use. So the XL AWD with the max tow package suits my needs. But I still don’t like the curb sniffer lower bumper. I don’t want to be bashing into parking lot tire curb stops and steep driveway ramps with my lower front bumper. And I don’t like the way it looks. So that is why I want the tremor bumper. I also want the rear locker, but I don’t want to give up the 4K tow package to get it. So, no Tremor package for me.

@@americanrambler4972 The tremor bumper wont fit a non tremor maverick since the intercooler is right there. I own a fully loaded XLT FX4 and the bumper is not that low, I hit it once in a place where a Ranger wouldve hit it too. You can just ad a 1 inch leveling kit and it would be the same height as the tremor

The thing I like about the tremor is that it’s using the new normal AWD technology more to the fullest extent of its potential. Of course it’s never going to be like my bronco with mechanical lockers and a high and low range, but for an everyday vehicle it’s using its’ brains to do well in more challenging conditions.

I really tried to like Fords, but my Mo-chine (jeep) was doing full whoop, and crawled up a rocky hill where I got to see the paths in the valley below. Still building, can't wait to get to the next few mods. There's a crawl control in my jeep called Selec-speed, and I only recently considered using it for ascent, but you've given me the Idea that it's more capable than I previously thought. It used the ABS brakes pretty hard, and I'd like to switch to braided steel lines before playing too hard with it.

I bet if you throw it in mud and ruts it would have climbed that hill.. so many reviewers say ooh this hill is slippery so ill do sand or slippery mode, but those require a ton of tire spin, where mud and ruts reduces wheel spin.

I have 22 fx4 maverick.. I don't think I need a locker dif. There is no need for 1. I pulled a 2 axle trailer going uphill, loose grave, uneven ground, backing up and pulling it out of the lot. Awd is just enough 👌

Id be interested to see if you could have brake torqued it up that lip. That technique has gotten me into many places a vehicle never should have been able to get to. Maverick Tremor is top of my list for next vehicle.

So one think about the trail control, you had said it works up and down hill. Be careful with using it down hill, I did the same and burnt out the ABS control module when it started to get away and the ABS started firing to slow it down.. Let's just say it's been an extremely long wait for the replacement part....

Great review. Question.. @ 4:42 you mentioned augmented V8 engine tones in two of the drive modes.. Is it very noticeable? I haven't found any other video that mentioned it.

You guys left out the most important factor, on the hill. The Maverick is lighter than that GX you showed spinning tires. Being lighter is better for driving on sand or mud, especially climbing. Because you don't sink in, as much.

It's like mine though. Still needs a 2 inch lift then it's fine. I think Cherokee Trailhawk beats it. Has low range and 5 skid plates (plus optional factory rock sliders) and better angles.Its close though! If you can get to a 3 inch or 4 inch lift (we're probably talking about subframe drops at that point) it would be really good.

Also, there is an L button in the middle of the shifter that puts it in Low. It double as a neutral button if there is no one in the vehicle and pops up a message about that when you hit it, which seems to have caused confusion about its purpose. I know the video is a year old but maybe try it again and hit that button....

Hi Adam, we did not air down. For the sake of consistency we do not air down any of the press loaners. There is certainly some additional grip on the table.

This little truck reminds me of the horse from Hidalgo the movie. An offspring of questionable parentage that nonetheless keeps giving and giving, going the distance whatever its owner asks of it. It is more of a real Mustang than even the car Mustang these days. (And I love the Mustang). It is far more than the sum of its parts

In the middle of the knob is an L. If you click on that it locks it in low. Not sure if that would help or not but it is of note.

You’re right, it does. But that is not a low range. It actually just adjust the shift mapping to keep it in a lower gear rather than upshifting at the usual points

Great question, and yes we did test that. Unfortunately selecting L will keep the transmission in lower gears (mostly for engine braking down hills) it is not a low range less than 1st gear.

I would have liked to seen it with mud and rut mode and at a similar speed the the f150 tremor pkg testsd speed. I understand the worry you had about the approach angle but you made the approach worse by keeping it in normal mode and sand mode digging it deeper down before the embankment on the hill. I dont think you gave it the best possible chance, or a fair attempt or honest assesment instead you almost set it up to fail. If you bring a vehicle up to a parking block then gave it gas it will have tremendous resistance similar to blocking the tires. Now add that same scenario on dirt with a 23 degree angle. I just think it didn't have a chance of succeeding the way you set it up and not putting it in the most aggressive mode with lockers on, on the first attempt.

What the "diff lock" buttons really do: tells the awd computer to expect slip. Seriously, that's it. It applies clutch current earlier and more aggressively but if you plugged into the awd computer i promise you'd see a huge variation in clutch current. You can tell really easily by turning them on and then doing a full lock u-turn off road. You won't see scrub as if they were locked. That's because the computer is calculating ideal torque values for rear clutches using all sensor inputs regardless of button state. It ain't locking anything. The awd computer will give the same clutch current maximums either way.

We did that because I was thinking the same thing (“locked” the rear diff on dirt) and it left a scrub radius. To be honest we did not expect that. It does seem that the pto clutch (transmission to rear end) is acting like you have described, as it does not bind at all on pavement when locked, or when turning on dirt. But the rear end is locking aggressive enough to spin 1:1 when a wheel is in the air, and to leave scrub marks in the dirt.

That's pretty cool if it works. I would hope nobody is expecting a real transfer case and real locking 4x4. The AWD mode on f150 is very similar and the system works perfectly on my 2021 Transit Van. Easy to use and almost real without the risk of breaking things.

AWD is just lame, it needs a two speed transfer case. The aftermarket will come up with a real skid plate. It's fine for gravel roads and some light off-roading.

AWD is freaking awesome and works very well. If you want all that then you need a frame so just get the Ranger. This isn't the vehicle for those things.
