Pickford Trent Walker Stones Konsa Saka Rice Bellingham Palmer Kane Foden Obviously Trent will drift into midfield, Saka will be very high basically playing as a left winger so Foden can drift into central area’s. Much more balanced in my opinion.

@@alexbelotti1603 Well in this formation Foden will have much more freedom to stay central where he operates best and we will have width on both sides which has been our biggest issue in my opinion. Of course Gareth could just stick to the current formation and play Saka or Gordon on the left. Whatever he does he certainly has all of the tools at his disposal to win this tournament but it remains to be seen whether he can figure out how to get the best out of this very talented group of players.

@@timeless4369we’ve got this all wrong in my opinion, the key is get the best out of Bellingham and let Bellingham take centre stage. Foden clearly has no chemistry or presence in that England team, it was no coincidence that as soon as went off England scored straight away. The foden experiment needs to end.

He would have been better than a player who is never going to get any game time (Gordon) or a player with no physical presence, pace or goals (Foden), but its down to Southgate really taking an incomplete squad and not using what he has picked in the right positions.

I've been saying this from day one when Southgate didn't bring a fit left back. Bobby Robson was forced by injury to change to a back three in Italia 90 group stages and we got to the semi final. The result of the last game had nothing to do with tactical changes and everything to do with desperation and luck. And of course a bit of magic from Jude to top it off. One team tried to hang onto the lead and almost managed it. England spent too much time playing the ball back and to the side. Little in the way of attacking the goal for the most part until time was almost up and desperation forced them to do so. They have to stop the incessant passing and possession play and focus on and really attacking the goal. It's more of an attitude change rather than formation.

let's be CLEAR here, when they talk about 3 at the back, they mean 5 at the back as the wing backs will be defensive and then 2 holding midfielders, so 7 and then the keeper so 8 AT THE BACK ...against the mighty Switzerland, who couldn't beat Scotland

Yes Maths profs say Gareth 3 🦁 will win better w a 3-4-3 w Trent as a right wingback & Saka as Left WB. Harry does much better with partners like Palmer & Jude up front. Use Foden as an impact sub. Should be Pickford Walker (RCB) Stones and Konsa. Wing backs Shaw and Trent, Mainoo Bellingham Foden in a 3 man midfield. Toney and Kane up front. Shaw has to be ready by now.

Gareth has shown he is no adventourous tactician, I really don't anticipate any changes in formation / personnel or gameplay and his argument will be these tactics got us this far blah blah blah. Unless the players get a grip of the situation and start deciding team tactics amongst themselves on the pitch I cant see anything other than a Swiss win. The talk is already about a favourable draw to the final instead of the game in hand, do not underestimate the Swiss Gareth, they are playing well above Englands level so far in this tournament.

Crying out for 3-5-2 and it will stop Kane from drifting back! Foden and Bellingham In front of Rice is a no-brainer for the middle, and there are loads of options for wingback rotation, including the untried Gomez, whose versatility saved Liverpool's season.

Defend or Attack? Back 4 or Back 3? It all well to want a packed midfield, with a more forward-running team, but if we leak goals like a sieve and don't take the chance we do get, what's it all for? Southgate is rightly looking to play a defense-minded game, fully aware of our weaknesses. The masses, led on by a fickle press, want what they see others play. I'm predicting a back 9, who pass the ball around our half, using Pickford every 30 seconds. We'll go behind then bring Ivan Toney on with 20 seconds to do something. It will be the most boring 90 minutes of your life (since the last England game) but Switzerland will score 2 own goals in the 97th minute and Southgate will think he's a tactical genius.

And how does Southgate change the patterns of play of sideways/backwards passing? Passing to the front 3 when the opposition defence are behind them and so failing to get behind them and balls into the box to create chances. Very well controlling the ball but it doesn’t get upfield fast enough and far too easy to defend against. Switzerland will be happy to play low block and hit England on the counter attack.

To say Geye has been our best player shows how little the second man knows about the sport. The man hasnt played badly by any means but he doesnt travel at all with the ball. He plays his simple passes left and right. He is a premiership footballer. That is the basic BASICS
