@bigboi5545 They also learn the wrong lessons from non-successes. "What's that? Our 2-D animated film made less than our 3-D animated film?! That must mean that nobody wants to go see traditionally animated films anymore!". No, dumbass Hollywood exec! It means that not every film you put out is gonna be a massive financial success, because that's an unrealistic expectation to have! Unlike you, most people aren't rich!
One of the really cool attention to detail that Godzilla Minus One has, is that in some of the far away shots of Godzilla walking around... you can see him stepping on people or see people, even dogs running away from him.
The only thing minus one changes is more people are going to crap on the monsterverse for not being like minus one and having godzilla as a anti hero instead of a villian. I personally don't think it will change Hollywood as we know it in my opinion. While minus one is good being good and basically a masterpiece won't change anything at least that easily in my opinion.
And I think there's two reasons for why people are dunking on the MV. One is obviously Toho purism. Two seems to be a conflation of feeling compelling emotions with character writing quality; they wanted an emotional experience from the MV, but because they barely felt anything or nothing, they just wrote off the characters as "uninteresting".
I don't mind Godzilla being an anti-hero in the Monsterverse, and I don't mind a movie being pure escapist. I don't think there should be only one way to do Godzilla
The simple answer is: NO. No matter how good a film is, Hollywood itself will never change. It dug a hole too deep that it will continue a destructive downward spiral of quality. But do they care? No. Old habits die hard.
Regular moviegoers; Toho estudios' "Gojira " it's a jewel, both narrative, and visually Hollywood and its shills: more WOKE! Moviegoers: but it has great storytelling... Hollywood: More WOKE! More representation, more inane plots más insufferable , forgettable characterse! THE MESSAGE it's more important, entertainment? Whats that...?!
Minus One was a beautiful attention to detail Godzilla film. The best anyone ever seen their whole life, but it be a great miracle if finally Hollywood thanks to Toho and Godzilla Minus One. So far we haven’t got much other than the teaser for GxK, hopefully that film will be good too!
I don't think Minus One will change anything in Hollywood but I think it'll change how Toho handles the Godzilla series. The gap between Shin Godzilla and Minus One was one of the longest in the series but the two were highly commercially and critically successful movies. Both movies demonstrate that Japanese-made kaiju movies still have wide appeal and high-quality efforts will yield great success. People love kaiju movies but they love well thought out films more than a bunch of movies released annually. I think Toho will continue the Godzilla series for the foreseeable future but they're going to be very deliberate with all future projects. The gap between future movies will be longer than they were in like the Showa era but the movies will continue being high quality. That being said, I'd love to see them follow up Minus One with a sequel that is similar to Godzilla Raids Again or a Gamera reboot that is given the same attention to quality as these recent Godzilla movies.
The film comes out in the UK on the 15. Gonna go see it over the weekend. Somehow I doubt that Godzilla Minus One will change things in Hollywood. Hollywood has proven time and again at this point that they aren't willing to learn from their mistakes. The studios will churn out the same old same old crap to push "the message", the films they make will bomb and they'll throw a hissy fit blaming certain types of people labelling them every ism, ist and phobe. Japan on the other hand isn't bothing with such nonsense and are clearly focused on getting butts in theatre seats and providing good entertainment. We've seen the same thing happen with comic books and manga as well. Once comics started pushing "the message", readers were leaving comics and flocking to manga in droves. As a result, manga sales have gone up while comic sales have gone down. Of course, that's not to say that all Hollywood movies are pushing "the message. We have had some really good movies over the years that have been successful. Both Sonic the Hedgehog movies come to mind and the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie was quite good. And there have been some comic books that have been good so far, such as Dynamite's new Fire and Ice series and Frank Frazetta's Death Dealer from Opus.
One more comment... keep in mind that Bruce Lee himself, said he understood the reasons why he wasn't made a leading man and he did not disagree. He understood that he was part of a small minority in the U.S. and that he was unlikely to be a large draw. That is why he went to Hong Kong...
Good talk Omni. Interesting about Enter The Dragon. I believe American Graffiti, also a low budget film, is right up there also, having earned hundreds of times its cost back.
I thoroughly enjoyed Minus One and found it VASTLY superior to Shin. My biggest gripe was that the CG on Godzilla was a bit wonky. His movement felt unfinished; looking kind of weightless a lot of the time. Shin's effects where much better in that regard. (Also I didn't know until now that Shin's budget was only 10 million to Minus One's 15 million! That's crazy!)
Shin Godzilla’s effects were FAR SUPERIOR. And since Shin Godzilla had a lower budget, there is no excuse why the effects in Godzilla Minus One are awful.
This movie will change nothing in Hollywood, other than send them the message that they can make movies with messages and be successful... I don't think anything will change in the future for the simple reasons that they live in a bubble and most don't believe that they are the reason movies are failing and that anybody next in line to take over is more woke than the previous people in charge.
So, out of curiosity, what do you think the chances are of the 4th new Planet of the Apes film being another turning point, or another hikjack of a beloved series for shoddy quality in social engineering experimentation at the meta-level?
I imagine that the reason there has been little change is probably due to stubbornness, ego, and distrust amongst each other. I do hope for a change, but I don't know when it's going to be happening. Since the world feels more bitter and spiteful than it ever has been. Even having a bad influence on me becoming more cynical, and passive aggressive with certain opinions.
I will say the same thing as I said in Anubis' video. If this film ends up winning the Oscar for best VFX, it will be a SERIOUS blow to Hollywood for how low of a budget it is compared to most big time VFX films that Hollywood will have to be forced to change. Either that or they will bend the rules to prevent that from happening again biggest Hollywood is also woke and are bigots but no one will tell you that.
You're absolutely right Omni Viewer. While Godzilla Minus One is quite possibly one of the greatest achievements in film making history and garners considerable attention, adoration and accolades, wether or not it inspires any substantially positive change within hollywood and the media it produces, (hopefully it does), remains to be seen. Thank you profusely for another profoundly impactful video.
For those who do not know, last week Grace Randolph was questioning the success of “Godzilla: Minus One”. She had the audacity of comparing the box-office of this film to the Mosnterverse releases and indicated that those features had a much larger debuting gross. Of course, she did it without mentioning the factors that has made “Minus One” a real success (foreign film, subtitled film, limited release & with a much lower budget - a budget that may even be lower than $15 million that has been thrown out there by the media).
@@Dontuween She isn't calculating box office success properly. It's all about multiplication. The typical break-even point is around 2.5x the budget of the movie. 2014 and KSI broke even. KOTM almost broke even, yet I blame WB releasing it in the wake of Avengers Endgame. GVK also almost broke even, but that was also released on HBO Max, and it had to bring people back to theaters during Covid which it did. Obviously Minus One broke even, and I'm hearing its budget was actually less than $15 Million.
@@Dontuween Isn't she one of those "my dad works at Nintendo" types that LARPs as some industry insider/influencer despite being wrong a ton of times? I might be thinking of someone else, but still don't see what the point is in giving into that obvious interaction rage bait.
On the whole people don't change, we just find news ways to be terrible and justify terrible behavior. Reading any holy text or historical account will confirm as much. Godzilla Minus One will not change anything on its own, it may be part of the change but it won't be the change. The change, if it happens, will be brought on by a confluence of massive financial losses and unexpected success from titles like Godzilla, Joker, Top Gun Maverick, etc. Put another way Hollywood will only change under penalty of death.
10:43 I agree with your argument in this video, but I believe you're confusing Bruce Lee's pre-Enter the Dragon career in Hong Kong with the Bruceploitation phenomenon that came later. Prior to making Enter the Dragon, Lee starred in just three films: The Big Boss, Fist of Fury and Way of the Dragon and none of those are considered low grade among kung fu fans. They are in fact genre classics and they propelled Lee to superstardom in Asia, which brings me to my next point: Bruceploitation was not an invention of Hollywood. It was almost entirely produced by the Asian film industry. Studios in Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea and the Philippines began churning out often cheaply made, sometimes very strange movies starring actors who took screen names such as Bruce Le and Bruce Li while trying to imitate Lee's screen persona with the usual result being terribly funny or just plain terrible. The American home video market did perpetuate Bruceploitation by releasing many of these movies with English dubs (and occasionally slapping Lee's name on a movie that wasn't even trying to imitate him) and confusing an awful lot of people who were looking for the authentic Bruce Lee, but the only American produced Bruceploitation film that I know of is the utterly ridiculous Fist of Fear, Touch of Death, and that was made and released independently. Columbia Pictures did give the Hong Kong produced Game of Death a theatrical release in 1978 (some people count Game of Death as a legitimate Bruce Lee movie; it's not) but the major American studios really just shrugged and moved on after Enter the Dragon and Lee's death, not changing anything as you said. (Edited for grammar and accuracy)
Hollywood should change, but they’re not. They’re going to perceive it as just another dumb monster movie that got lucky and that’s all. What needs to change is the fandom accepting there are other people that matter besides them. Takashi Yamazaki made a Godzilla movie that resonated with everyone, which is great. However, there are those that are just so blinded by their hate towards people of the opposite political party they would rather show the most toxic side and scare away anyone that would like to get into Godzilla more.
But race is not part of the reason why minus one was a hit in North America. The biggest reason was a good script. If I could just pick a script, I could do it in Hollywood in a heartbeat. Secondly, I wish Hollywood would make movies like they used to, where only white people appear in them as a normal part of the movie. Not in a bad way, but naturally. There may even happen to be no blacks or Hispanics in the neighborhood where the story takes place. On the day Godzilla attacked Ginza in Minus One, I believe the U.S. military had put a curfew on the area after the news of Godzilla's approach. Love in your room.
@@kasaibouF29 I have many reasons why I don’t like this movie. It felt like the film didn’t have enough of what I wanted to see. The film was way too quick. Some scenes felt too quick. It didn’t feel complete to me. The scenes with Godzilla went too quickly. The destruction of the city happened too early. Too few scenes of Godzilla. Godzilla felt like he had the least amount of screen time I’ve ever seen in a modern live action Godzilla film, even more so than Godzilla 2014 and Shin Godzilla. And lastly the CGI on Godzilla was very mediocre. At times he moved very stiff and cartoonish. The rendering and compositing ranged from mediocre to awful, especially at the beginning in Godzilla’s early form, which looked pretty bad on the big screen. Some of the CGI looked like fanmade Godzilla animations on RU-vid. One of the only realistic CGI I could find was the close up of a mine in Godzilla’s mouth in one scene. This movie felt like it gave me half of what I wanted in a Godzilla movie. I absolutely love the concept of Godzilla in WW2 or post WW2 fighting the military. This film KINDA gave me that, but not nearly enough of it. Another minor issue (nitpick) I had was that the plan to defeat Godzilla scene happened a bit too early. I was hoping that Godzilla would fight more military before they came with this plan. I will say though that the characters were great, especially Koichi, and the story was ok, though. And one good aspect of the CGI was the physics of the building destruction and water splashing. They looked quite high quality. The atomic breath was also cool. Godzilla’s design was pretty good. Not to mention the destruction scenes and military fighting Godzilla scenes were awesome, despite the awful CGI on Godzilla. The 1954 Godzilla film is far superior than this underwhelming, disappointing, NOT-flawless film. Superior in atmosphere, that is. Calling this one of the best Godzilla movies ever is an overstatement. There are many more problems I have. The film’s tone is not nearly depressing as I wanted it to be. Not enough disturbing imagery. Not as much dead corpses as I wanted. Not enough gore. And the worst aspect: it’s not even R Rated. So this is definitely not the dream Godzilla movie I was really hoping for it to be. I had REALLY high expectations. I expected it to be just as gritty and disturbing as the original if not more, but it wasn’t! I truly believe that people will watch this film again and again, in the future, and will start to see more of its flaws. The same flaws that I see. Overall the movie was a disappointment, although I have seen worse. I rate this film a 4/10.
@@ShinGhidorah171) Having it not be entirely what you wanted it to be does not automatically mean it’s a bad film. 2) The CGI isn’t nearly that bad and Godzilla had 4 whole scenes in the film. 3) The film is set at a point where Japan had NO MILITARY, a few barely held together ships and tanks at minimum. I will agree however that Godzilla should’ve had a longer city attack, he could’ve been a bit more expressive in other points too, and that the pacing kind of drags out in the last 3rd of the film. But outside of those gripes the film is not at all terrible. You are frankly exaggerating.
