I thought the tower was leaning as it was constructed. It's actually got a slight curve in an attempt to counter the problem.
@Justin-fl1nv
@Justin-fl1nv Месяц назад
It has several curves. The construction paused several times over the years sometimes for years allowing the soil to settle some but it didn't settle evenly so they added some more to the other side to straighten it out. This happened several times over the decades it took to finish the tower. If they had just built it straight up right away it would have collapsed centuries ago.

Fun Fact: As of March 2024, Garisenda Tower, located in the city of Bologna, leans 4 degrees compared to the Leaning Tower of Pisa 3.9 degress and is in danger of collapsing. An area around the toward has been cordoned off in case in collapses and the city has finally approved mitigation efforts similar to those used on the Leaning Tower of Pisa to save Garisenda Tower. Unfortunately efforts are hampered by the fact Garisenda Tower was built in the middle of the ancient city making it difficult to bring in large heavy machinery and only a smaller public square bordering it to use as a staging ground for mitigation efforts.

They can actually prevent it from leaning any further or falling if they add a bunch of rebars tilted on the side so it has something to lean on. As an engineer, I can easily solve this, just need the workers and I can explain what needs to be done. I think they aren’t doing it because it will cost a lot. But honestly it would cost less than $2 million to completely stabilize the building. It’s worth the money.

1173 was 851 years ago, so if it’s been progressively tilting further towards collapse for upwards of EIGHT CENTURIES and it still has an estimated 3 more to go, it’s still another impressive architectural achievement of the medieval Italians to remain that sturdy on such frail substrate.

Well when it gets close to falling again just move it the other way or they could put like some concrete under the leaning tower

I really, for some reason thought it was built like that, but it was really really straight to make it look tilted

If they start working now, they can prevent it from falling. If you can disassemble the London Bridge, ship it to the US, and reassemble it in Arizona, you can fix this tower.

It’s not because of the soft soil. Builders made a mistake in building it, so it was built that way (tilted).

There is a replica of the leaning tower a Pisa in Niles, IL right across the street from a target/costco. It’s in the most random spot but it’s cool.

During WW2 the Americans suspected the Germans had artillery Forward Observation Officers (FOOs) at the top of the Leaning Tower. It was the largest structure around and had a commanding view of the area. They sent their own FOO up to take the tower down with an artillery strike. When he got to within sight of the tower he hesistated, unsure about destroying such a well-known historical landmark. Especially as the Germans were retreating and would soon vacate the area anyways so there would no longer be a need. While he hesistated the Germans started landing spotting rounds in and around his position and he quickly retreated. Sure enough within days the Germans also withdrawn from the area, leaving the tower intact.
