Fine job. Took me back to when I borrowed my friends 1971 Camaro, drove to the home of a beautiful blonde and this year she and I mark our 46th year together. What a car!

The shoulder straps that are hooked into the back seat belts are for the front seat belts. They didn't have shoulder straps for the back seats back then. When you said they were missing I started laughing so hard.

True. Wasn't until 1974 MY that shoulder belts were mandatory for the front passengers. Our 1973 Monte Carlo had the shoulder belts folded up and placed in pockets above the door. If you wanted to wear them, you pulled them out and hooked them into the keyhole slot on the lap belt buckle tang. They were such a pain to use, we never did.
@hawaiifiles
@hawaiifiles 4 года назад
We had a 1972 Chevy Chevelle and the front harness was clipped to the roof when not in use. It was not integrated into the lap belt. You had to fasten it separately. And yes as someone said, back seats had to shoulder belt. Was not regulated by the government until a few years later.
@mikehoroho8453
@mikehoroho8453 4 года назад
@@stevevarholy2011 I had a 72 Nova. Mine had these steel loops above the doors that the shoulder strap slipped into. They should be just like that on the Camaro.

Those funny rear seat belts are actually the older style of front shoulder harness. Originally there would have been clips or plastic panels up over the side windows to retain them when not in use. The combined seat /shoulder harness came out just after that. I had a '74 GM car that had the more modern type but our family '72 Olds was like yours is. Good luck with the sale - it will go quick.
@davidgalinat4257

I had a '73 Torino with the same shoulder belt setup. As you said, the shoulder belts were stored up above the side windows. The rear seats had lap belts only.

The seat belts on the sides are for the front seat, not back. I may be wrong but that is like the first gen shoulder belts.
@PapiDoesIt

You're correct. My 70 Chevelle had that same setup too. You could either just use the lap belt or attach the shoulder strap to the lap belt.

@nefaurora
@nefaurora 4 года назад
Yes, That's correct. My 1969 and 1972 Chevy Nova has the same "Overhead" Seatbelt setup. You had the Lap Belts and the the Overhead Shoulder belts clicked into the Lap Belts if you wanted to make a 3-point Seat Belt. My Late 60's Fords (1968 and after) had them as well. :o) Tony K.

I believe those shoulder belts are for the front seats. When not in use, they fold up along the window opening along the headliner. That was an early 70's late 60's thing. ;)

It looks great, and I hope it goes to a good home. I had a yellow car with a black vinyl roof back in the 70's, and when I would shine it (there was a product that was similar to paste black shoe polish), and shine the yellow, it really looked great - like this Camaro does now.

The belts that are in the back are actually the shoulder belt for the front, they were normally hooked up on the head liner above the doors. You could use the lap belt only or connect the shoulder belt to the lap belt. I had an old 73 vehicle that had those belts. If you don't use them there the hooks above the doors to store them.

I'd clean that interior completely. Take those seats out, thoroughly vacuum & steam clean the rug & headliner,, even replace it if needed, and detail the dash, and be done with it. You don't want to breathe in all that mold and mustiness left behind from all those years of sitting like that.

Those straps hanging from the ceiling are actually for the front belts. Its a primitive 3 point harness and the backs were straight lap belts. You can fold them up a certain way and hang them along the bottom of the roof top of the door. My 68 Plymouth fury had those sholder belts and they clipped in under the sun visors. I never wore those sholder belts though... they didnt exactly make me feel safe and secure. Not like modern sholder belts
