I’ve waited so long to see this! I’m Alex’s eldest son and learnt to drive in SKI 777. She originally was a 1976 230.4 model, with a four cylinder engine. I believe the replacement engine was either a 200 or a 220. It was fitted by Dads go to mechanic, Rudolf Stocklosa? , a Polish emigrant living in Cork who had been captured by the Germans as a young lad and put to work in an armaments factory during the Second World War. He was a brilliant machinist and could turn anything on a lathe to make a good repair. SKI 777 was probably our most loved car and Dad was loathe to part with it for years. The replacement engine was probably only in the car for 5 or 6 years before the accident that put it off the road. The car spun when Dad hit the ditch and the back end hit the earth bank, blocking the exhaust and she wouldn’t restart. A local mechanic recovered the car and got it to start. The drivers seat had cracked the floor next to the cill and they bodged it back together enough for Dad to drive it back to Cork a week later…! It was put in the garage and never left until you dragged it out. It was replaced with a W123 200 Automatic that ended its days in the garage next door! I put those mudflaps on the car probably soon after we got it from Dads client in 1981 or 82!
Great to hear all of this! Hope you enjoyed the episode. A collector bought it from us to use the engine and any other good parts for his own cars so it will live on in some sense. 🤝
They were called the 230.4 because when it replaced the 220, Mercedes already had a 230 on the market with a 6 cylinder engine so they badged them 230.4 and 230.6 to tell them apart
In 1975 had a W114 1971 200D. It was great to drive and I only sold it because it was LHD and I moved to Cyprus (LHD not allowed at that time). I would have one today, slow, economical and solid.
For sale, barn find, running motor : 10.000€ 😁😁😁 hahaha , you really killed me with that video, the unloading of the car is gold. i think i've never seen a so rusted mercedes running by his own .... great job and thanks to share it with us ! cheerz from France ! Jim PS : a little thought for karen who is still getting angry right now
A M A Z I N G !!! We were convinced is was a no go. You could always have "driven" it like the Flintstones as there wasn't a floor left. Great work. Always looking forward to the next episode 👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋
I wouldn't mind but there was a road directly behind us that could be used and we took exactly 4mins 31seconds! She rang the guards and said if an ambulance needed to get through someone would die. 🙃
What an old sweetheart! Great to see Roman's post below. It wasn't uncommon to see these old Mercs still in daily use until recently here in the American northeast, though never the petrol variants. Cheers and all the best, from the westernmost Hampshire.
Another brilliant video! I got to work as a mechanic on cars that can drive on a road legally, i don't understand why you put yourself in such misery fixing museum piece's but that's why I watch this, lovely content keep it up
@@CannibalCars that’s amazing, a properly built engine, not like modern junk. I’ve come across a cool RU-vid channel this week if you’re looking for something to watch, channels called “Oak Swamp” the fella is building a mint special out of old bits of 1930’s Austin, built some other cool stuff too 👍
Youz re uploaded this ? Or im I going bonkers ? already had one unnerving experience today . Woke up and it wasn't rainin and there was this big orange thing in the sky above rural Galway !!🤭😁😁
😂😂 a draft went public accidentally. That's what you watched, this is the final version, only difference is the ending last minute or two! Yeah this good weather is more than welcome!
