I feel your pain with the salt struggle. If everyone just put good winter tires on their vehicles, slowed down, and learned how to drive on snow/ice, we could all save sooooo much money on early repairs and vehicle replacements due to rust.
@onesadtech
@onesadtech 3 года назад
@Hank Rutherford Hill I hear you there, but as I said, slowing down and learning to drive to conditions is part of what needs to happen, and an essential one of course. Definitely not advocating for less salt at the risk of lives, but there are tons of less damaging ways to manage vehicle safety in poor conditions.

One thing I learned from buying non-running cars from marketplace/craigslist is that you never believe anything the previous owner tells you about why it doesn't run. I bought an Explorer once that supposedly just needed a fuel pump, turns out the motor jumped time, and I had to put an engine in it. Still can't beat $600.00 though... I still drive it.

I used to have an 87 ford ranger 4x4. It was my dad's, but he let me drive it til I rolled it on a snow packed dirt road I wasn't supposed to be on. When I was supposed to be at school. He was not amused. We pounded the dents out and I drove it for the next 7 years til I sold it. It was his but when I graduated high school he gave it to me, along with a dirtbike. Loved that truck.

I remember my old boss had an 88 Ranger 4WD that he loved. After many years, he kept it primarily as a winter truck until about 2004, when he gave it to someone in his family. That was only so he could make room in his driveway for an F-150 to tow his new trailer. That Ranger was an unstoppable beast. I wouldn't doubt that it's still running today.

Yep, my first car was a vauxhall viva hc. HC was supposed to be high compression, more like 'holy crap!' Blew the engine, rebuilt it from the ground up, ran it in as per the service manual. Started to ease the revs ups , was coming home from work and had to stop sharpish 'cause some idiot pulled out on me. Hit the gas after that and the engine dumped its oil out the exhaust. Drove home with a big blue cloud behind me, botched it up and px'd it at a local dealer who had done my mum over with a dodgy car, which me and my mates had to rebuild to make it safe, tuned the engine up a bit as well. My mum loved it as it was a bit of a sleeper. Had to laugh as I met when of his crew in the pub that night, his boss was spitting nails, they couldn't start it and because of where it was parked they had no option but to push it up the narrow lane, on a hill, to the workshop. Where his boss found that the body was shot and we'd hammered 2x3's up inside the sills to hold it together, sawdust in the transmission to quiet the gears. The car was barely worth a scrap value, let alone what he'd given me. The car I'd got was the only decent car he had on the lot. Funnily enough, he stopped trying to sell polished shit as cars soon after. Would I want another HC? Not even if it had been professionally restored, crap then and crap now. Never touched Vauxhall/Opal since, been either Jap or Ford and never had and issue with either.

WI guy here...Rust is such a drag! For a 30 yr Old truck I think that’s a good starting point for a project...weld a few bits of steel into it, power wash, por 15, then Tdi swap it. Just don’t make the rot worse by driving in the salt. Drive a cheap beater in the winter instead. This new liquid Brine they are using seems to rot cars even faster than the rocksalt did.

Well your frame looks in better shape, even with the rusty cross member. And that can be replaced. As for the starter bolts, I always just tapped out the hole and put larger bolts in it instead of that kind of Jerry Rigging. But if you are interested in another Ford Ranger, I know where there is one in better shape. But it does need a new motor.

Congrats on yet another resurrection! I actually bought a nearly identical Ranger (2.9, 4x4 5 spd) new in 1986. It was a good and trouble free truck, relatively speaking...only thing I had to replace was the throttle position sensor and the usual wear items such as tires and shocks. Traded it in on a new F-150 in '92. At that time the body was showing a little rust, and the dark blue paint was looking pretty faded. When I went to trade it in, the Ford dealer repaired the rust, and repainted everything but the inside of the bed, under warranty, after finding that I was the original owner! Have stuck with Fords ever since, and will never go back to GM. (Not a hard promise to keep, as I'm nearly 80)

An awesome trick you can do for injectors is get a sense of when the injector will fire as it idles. I like to use a long 1/4" extension and a small hammer. Get a sense of the rhythm of the injector firing and match that rhythm with the hammer tapping the extension while having the other end on the metal body of the injector. The harbor freight sonic cleaner helps with the super stubborn ones. With the hammer and extension method I've unstuck injectors that have sat for 6-7 years. An old gentleman showed me that 25 years ago. Hope it helps man!

Matt, dude, testing a pump full of old gas on top of the battery with sparky test wires? Please stay alive/around for the many people who like what you do 😊 Leftfield idea: if the Ranger has the Cologne V6, there are a couple of upgrades available - the 4.0 version as fitted to the contemporary Explorer; or the much-rarer Cosworth 24-valve OHC 2.9 as fitted to the UK-market Scorpio Cosworth. Might minimise the choppy-fabby aspect and provide extra grunt. Whatever happens, good luck and I look forward to watching this build 🤟🏼

I live in Memphis, TN. That body style is getting a little harder to find than it once was, but there are a ton of those available down here. There are a lot of them still on the road in my area, and lot of people turn wrenches on them and preserve them. You could find a really nice one relatively cheap in my area.

ANOTHER TEST YOU CAN RUN ,by using a fuel pressure tester 30-45 on this one , get the fuel pressure up to its peak and with the injector wires unplugged tap 12 v to the injectors and count one thousand one.... then record the pressure drop, reup your pressure each time , but remember if they do work then the intake will fill with fuel , there is a fancy tester from thexton suitable for that as well, this test prevents intake pulling if you dont have to.

Oh how I love wiring...... I had an issue with my 99 f150 and the security theft light. Fuel pump wouldn't come on the motor would turn over but wouldn't start and the theft light would flash real fast. I found that the plugs going into the speedometer wasn't all the way in. After taking my whole dash apart.

Connectors are for the factory to make subassemblies and for parts replacement by users. For this kind of truck, you can eliminate any of them that you wish and do a good splice. Takes away lots of corrosion/intermittent entry points and if you need to replace something later, just cut the friggin wire and re-splice. Much more reliable connection. It ain't rocket surgery. Really like you and your videos. Been rebuilding old vehicles for 60 + years myself. I'm 75. Thank you for making these videos. I can use what I learn from you. Ken in AZ

Damn this makes me feel so good about the 96 ranger I got for 1000 delivered. Needed maintenance items, many pulled from junkyard trucks that had those items newer. Engine was so good on that truck only 150k miles didn't burn a drop and manual trans was good except for sometimes it was stubborn to get into first. Ended up selling for blue book after what I put into it and taking it out on many offroad trips
