Today we are checking out this 1976 Jeep CJ5, which was custom built in the early 2000's but shortly after rolled three times on a trail ride. After limping it home, the owner stuck it in his garage and there it collected dust until rebuild rescue showed up to bring it back to life!!
After sitting for around 20 years will we be able to get this jeep running, and will we be able to drive it 150 miles back to the shop? You'll just have to watch and find out!

One of my favorite RU-vidrs is Vice Grip Garage. He's always bringing old vehicles back to life. One of the things he is a firm believer in is always make sure the engine will turn over by hand before using a starter. Says it can make or break an engine when it comes to reviving old vehicles. To be honest that Jeep is in pretty good shape compared to some of the stuff I've seen revived. Looking forward to seeing your next plane Revival Video! @Rebuild Rescue

Back in the mid-80s, I saw one of these parked in a field rusting away. I would drive by this jeep every day for a few years. I bought a CJ7 and began to think about trying to acquire that CJ5. I had this wild idea of cutting it in half and welding the back end to my CJ7. I ended up changing that idea to a more practical one. That CJ5 had a hydraulic plow attached to it. I acquired the CJ5 and had it installed onto my CJ7 and exciting enough it all worked like new. I had several really fun and productive winters plowing people's driveways for half of what the big guys were charging. There were a lot of shocked and very happy customers. Little did they know that they paid me to have fun! I even took along my gas blower and cleaned their sidewalks for no extra cost. So that I wouldn't get sued, I sprinkled a layer of salt so they wouldn't slip and fall. I didn't drive the CJ5 much because whoever owned it, switched out the engine for a Chrysler 8 cylinder monster engine. Way too much power for such a short wheelbase. I feared lifting the front with just a touch of the gas peddle. That experience with both Jeeps led me into buying another Jeep and an Eagle.

Hi it's Tut Tut here again......when connecting a vehicle battery ,FULLY connect a send terminal (can be positive on older vehicles) before connecting return terminal. That means fully tightened. This reduces the chance of shorts across the top of the battery from tools ,stray wiring ,components , etc. Making my way through these uploads after initially watching aircraft rescue vids. Keep up the incredible work you and your team are doing Jason.

used to have a 77 CJ-5... The good old days. I should have said it earlier too.... In September 1976, I gave $3999 for it. 4 years later when I traded it in, it was rusted in various places, but the same dealership I bought it from gave me an even $4000 for it. Turned around and bought an 81 CJ-7... The better old days. Bought an 88 Jeep Cherokee later.... Nuff said

My husband had a straight 6 cj5 and it was awesome put in low range and it would climb a hill on it's own best jeep of all the jeeps we owned his hubs were turn in hubs . We had so much fun in that thing. He did roll it 3 different times. We live in PA and it sat for probably 6 to 8 months in winter one year and it started right up

I'm shocked you said the parts stores don't carry parts for old vehicles. Our local Napa has been 50/50 for me on in stock items. They had the radiator for a 77 chev, 3 of the 4 brake cylinders for a 48 Plymouth and starter brushes for a 42 Ford in stock. The shift tube and plunger for a 86 f550, brake shoes and blower motor for a 71 Ford 250, were order items but showed up the next day.

If I don’t use that Lucas high mileage oil stabilizer in my 1987 Ford 460, it will clatter for about 30 more minutes after the heater starts blowing hot air. Which it takes about 15-20 minutes at idle to blow any kind of air above ambient temperature... Throw in that Lucas and it can sit for 2-3 weeks without starting and it'll only clatter for the first 15 seconds. When I got this truck 13 years ago, Lucas made a believer outta me in 1 oil change, now I use it in everything I own. The high mileage flavor even drastically reduces the rear main leak in my Cherokee XJ 4.0L

the porcelain also prevents a short from the Post to the Block. it ensures that all of the voltage gets to the bottom of the plug, and not Arcing some or all of the voltage to the block instead of at the bottom of the plug in the cylinder.

nothing to do with heat. since ceramic is a really good insulator.
@soggybiscotti8425
@soggybiscotti8425 2 года назад
Yeah, that was a completely worthless comment. Porcelain plugs are no longer used. Spark plugs are ceramic comprised of spesifically Al2O3 for the explicit reason that it is a better thermal and electrical insulator. The reason you explicitly stated, and only ceramic. Everyone with even the most primitive knowledge of mechanical engineering knows that. Why on earth did you feel the need to elaborate arbitrarily how spark plugs work, albeit incorrectly? Hope it made you feel special explaining the absolute bare basics of engineering and still be wrong. If you're going to unnecessarily comment on a video, on a topic you barely comprehend, and on a question that was not asked, nor was help required, at the bare minimum you should make sure you are correct.

Is the whole body on that thing plastic? My 78 had the original steel body and the floor pans had large drain holes with plastic caps that fit in them to help hold in what little heat they put out in Winter. Mine had the multi-piece aluminum top that made it look similar to a mail man's Jeep with a bunch of screws and bolts that held it to the body...and I did away with those and bought six little C-clamps and used those in place of the bolts in the back corners and the screws that held the front to the windshield frame. Made removing the top soooo much easier in nice weather.
@rebuildrescue

Yes this one has the completely fiberglass tub and hood on her. Light weight and zero rusting ! Was thinking of putting a hard top on her when we restore it. What top would you use on this one ?
@Rebel9668
@Rebel9668 2 года назад
@@rebuildrescue Personally if they make them for a CJ5 I'd get the fiberglass or plastic top if that was an option only because I think they're a one piece deal with the doors. The metal hardtop I had with mine was sturdy, but it also had a back door that was hinged, two side glasses in the "back seat area" that were hinged along with the doors with sideways sliding glass windows. All those hinges meant it was about as airtight as a sieve and the heater barely worked well enough to keep the windshield from frosting over in Winter. If you get cold Winters you'd better dress warm if you're gonna drive it every day like I did, lol. Modern ones have all that plastic and carpet in them with cloth seats and stay pretty warm inside, but those old CJ's were definitely a warm weather vehicle.

8:55 That filler-neck for the oil is wide enough that you could just suspend the tapered spout of the oil-treatment bottle down into it like a funnel, and let the rest of the bottle's costly contents drain down into the engine. :D P.S. To get more of that thick greasy goo out of the bottle, you could heat up a little light-weight motor-oil and pour it into the bottle, shake it up, and pour the resulting oil/goo mixture into the filler-neck, also.

Today's parts stores only stock parts for cars less than 10 years old, anything older has to be ordered unless it's a popular part. And some older parts are priced higher to discourage actually repairing. Starter solenoids used to be around $12-$15 for g.m, I priced one a year ago, and it was only $10 less than a reman starter, so I was forced to replace the whole starter. $55 for a solenoid is rediculious.
